In 1995, Huo Kaiming, a skilled technician at a mine, saw his life fall apart. Following his wife’s death two years prior, he had become despondent and frequently absent from work. During a period of corporate layoffs, his manager pressured him into early retirement. With only a small payout and no prospects, Huo’s future looked bleak until a man named Huang Liang approached him.

Huang, who operated an illegal coal pit in Fengyang, recruited Huo for his technical expertise and promised to help him find a new companion. Huo was eventually introduced to Jiao Yuqin, a woman working at a hair salon who claimed to be from Yunchuan. He was instantly smitten, and three months into their relationship, Jiao revealed she was pregnant. Overjoyed at the prospect of finally having a child—something he had never achieved with his late wife—Huo immediately proposed.

However, Jiao expressed concern about the gossip her past profession might bring upon their child in Fengyang. She suggested they move to her hometown in Yunchuan to start a small business. Trusting her completely, Huo sold his house to fund their new life. On what was supposed to be his final month at the mine, Jiao showed deep concern for Huo’s health.

Before he descended into the shaft, she insisted he drink a bottle of cough syrup along with some unidentified pills, claiming they were a remedy for his chronic bronchitis. Shortly after taking the mixture and entering the pit, Huo lost consciousness. In reality, Jiao had poisoned him to stage a "mining accident." She successfully claimed a massive 250,000 RMB death benefit from Huang Liang and vanished with the money.

Huang Liang, desperate to cover up the illegal operation, had Huo buried quietly. Miraculously, Huo survived and "resurrected" from the shallow grave. Furious over the lost payout, Huang Liang forced the confused Huo to sign an IOU for the full 250,000 RMB. Huo then spent years searching for the woman he loved.

When he finally reached Yunchuan, he discovered the real Jiao Yuqin’s family had died a decade ago and that the woman he married was a "phantom" who had used a stolen identity. He realized he was a victim of a "marriage-death" scam, a predatory scheme where con artists married miners only to kill them for insurance or compensation.

Driven by a murderous rage, Huo tracked the source of the cough syrup used to poison him, which led him to Chen Hui. In the present day, Chen Hui manipulated Huo’s obsession with revenge to his own advantage. He convinced Huo that Lu Yuan, a man who had been blackmailing Chen, was part of the gang that had scammed him. Following Chen's instructions, Huo met Lu Yuan in a desolate area.

While Lu Yuan arrived expecting a payout from Chen Hui, Huo saw only a conspirator. A violent struggle ensued, and Huo killed Lu Yuan before setting the body ablaze to erase the evidence. The local police, led by Captain Liu Na and local officer Chen Hongbing, arrived at the charred scene. They noticed suspicious drag marks, suggesting the body had been moved, and recovered a broken pager chain.

The investigation led them to Guo Liansheng, a friend of Lu Yuan who was caught trying to sell a pager at a pawn shop. Terrified, Guo confessed that Lu Yuan had been wary of a trap and had asked him to hide in the bushes as backup. Guo witnessed the murder from a distance, seeing a silhouette taller than Lu Yuan and a red sedan speeding away.

He also mentioned that the flames were a strange purple hue, indicating a chemical accelerant. Meanwhile, Liu Na sought some semblance of normalcy while staying with Chen Hongbing and his wife, Ding Yue. During a home-cooked dinner, Liu Na finally tasted the familiar flavors of home, which moved her deeply. However, Ding Yue, a medical professional, noticed scarred needle marks on Liu Na’s arms. Liu Na finally confessed that she was suffering from terminal lymphoma that had already spread.

Despite her diagnosis, she refused to stop working, insisting that this case would be her final contribution to the force. The tension escalated as the police broadcast an alert for the suspicious red sedan. Chen Hui and Gao Songge, unaware of the net closing in, were stopped at a police checkpoint shortly after Gao’s dialysis session. Though they were allowed to pass, danger was closer than they realized. Late that night, Huo Kaiming tracked them down.

He drenched their door in red paint and launched a brutal assault. During the chaos, Gao Songge was engulfed in flames, and Chen Hui was stabbed by Huo, as the cycle of vengeance Huo began years ago finally reached their doorstep.
