At the People's Public Security Bureau, Chen Hongbing interrogates Zhang Mei, the owner of a lottery station known as Sister Cai, using a photograph of Ma Heping. She initially denies knowing him well, claiming he was just a regular customer who once won a commemorative coin. However, her composure breaks when Chen Hongbing presents a lottery ticket printed at 3:00 AM on October 2nd.
She eventually admits that Ma Heping knocked on her door in the middle of the night to buy it. When shown a bottle of Peidun Cough Syrup found in her shop, she fearfully claims it belonged to a woman named Yu Susu. The interrogation is interrupted by urgent news: Chen Hui has been kidnapped by Huo Kaiming. The kidnapper forced Chen Hui to call the station, demanding Sister Cai’s release.
Gao Songge arrives in a panic, explaining that Huo Kaiming abducted Chen Hui from a photo studio and fled toward the north crossing. Chen Hongbing and his team rush to the scene, where they find a vehicle engulfed in flames. They manage to pull an unconscious Chen Hui from the burning car just in time. While tracking a trail of blood nearby, Chen Hongbing realizes that the injured Huo Kaiming escaped by jumping onto a passing coal train.
Chen Hui is rushed to the hospital with no pulse and dilated pupils. As doctors perform emergency CPR, Chen Hui experiences a dark vision in his mind. He sees Lu Yuan and Huo Kaiming taunting him, calling him a coward who cannot protect anyone. Exhausted, he is ready to give up on life until a memory of Gao Songge’s smile flashes through his mind.
His desire to be with her reignites his will to live, and his heart begins to beat again. Although he survives, he remains in a coma due to a blood clot in his brain caused by the trauma. During a search of Huo Kaiming’s home, the police discover seventy-six bottles of Peidun Cough Syrup.
The investigators theorize that Huo Kaiming was the source of the illicit trade and intended to kill both Sister Cai and Ma Heping for violating his rules. However, Chen Hongbing is skeptical. He finds it inconsistent that Huo Kaiming would use Chen Hui as leverage to free Sister Cai if his only goal was to kill her. He orders his team to divide into groups and search the railway lines for the fugitive.
Back in the interrogation room, Chen Hongbing leverages Sister Cai’s fear for her daughter’s safety. He reveals that Huo Kaiming has already killed two people and might target her family next. Terrified, Sister Cai finally confesses the truth to seek protection. She explains that two years ago, her husband died in a coal mine after a fatal reaction between his medication and cough syrup. After receiving a 300,000 yuan settlement, she realized insurance fraud was a lucrative path.
She recruited two girls from her hometown—Jiao Yuqin and Yu Susu—to marry solitary miners and stage fatal "accidents" for compensation. To hide their tracks, Sister Cai had the two women swap identities. The real Yu Susu took Jiao Yuqin’s name and married Huo Kaiming, while the real Jiao Yuqin took Yu Susu’s name and married Zhu Qiang. Sister Cai also admits to manipulating Ma Heping to obtain bottled cough syrup, which she believed looked more like legitimate medicine.
She had the fake Yu Susu (the real Jiao Yuqin) switch Zhu Qiang’s stomach medicine to trigger a lethal reaction with the syrup. Despite this confession, the police realize the cough syrup trade existed in Fengyang long before Sister Cai’s scheme, meaning Huo Kaiming is likely not the ultimate source. Chen Hui eventually regains consciousness but appears to be in a catatonic state, failing to recognize even his father.
The doctor explains that while the blood clot is shrinking, his condition is a psychological response to the trauma. He suggests taking Chen Hui home to a familiar environment. Chen Hongbing tenderly cares for his son at home, even changing his clothes and promising to support his future with Gao Songge if he recovers. Hoping to spark a memory, Gao Songge takes Chen Hui to the roller skating rink he helped build.
She reminisces about the shared memories they had there, her voice breaking as she begs him to wake up. Just as she begins to lose hope, Chen Hui looks at her and speaks. With a small smile, he reveals that his unresponsive state was merely an act.
