Leng Qiming stood with a heavy expression at a remote crime scene in Shuangta Village, where a local resident had discovered a body while searching for a lost sheep. After a careful examination, Leng determined the victim had been strangled before his throat was slit. Although recent rain had washed away many traces, Ye Qian’s keen sense of smell picked up the scent of engine oil in the mud.

Nearby, they discovered clear tire marks, which Ye Qian suspected belonged to a motorcycle. Leng noted that the absence of a blood trail leading to the body confirmed this was the primary crime scene rather than a dumping ground. The following morning, the police discussed the investigation. Technical analysis suggested the killer was left-handed and had pinned the victim down after a violent struggle. While a small amount of cash remained, the victim’s phone and identification were missing.

Based on the thick calluses on the man’s palms and his worn knee pads, Ye Qian initially theorized he was a long-term rider. Leng Qiming refined this, pointing out that since the area was too remote for delivery services, the victim was likely a motorcycle taxi driver killed for his vehicle. He ordered Ye Qian to prepare facial photos for an investigation notice and tasked the team with checking missing person reports and distributing flyers at transportation hubs.

The victim was soon identified as Xu Gang. His wife, Zhang Meifeng, was devastated, explaining that her husband had spent three years driving his motorcycle to support their family of six. She described the vehicle as a Dayang motorcycle covered in stickers that their children loved. Following this lead, Ye Qian attempted to call Xu Gang’s phone. On the road, the killer, He Changchun, ignored the call and eventually discarded the phone to avoid being tracked.

Ye Qian deduced that the killer had murdered Xu Gang specifically to obtain a getaway vehicle that wouldn't require real-name registration, unlike trains or buses. He Changchun later used a landline to contact his middle school classmate, Wang Lei, insisting they meet to settle a debt. However, Wang Lei was already cooperating with Captain Liao from the Liuhe City Police. Through Wang Lei, the police tracked the landline to a location near National Highway 322 in Linshui Township.

At the shop, the owner recognized He Changchun from a wanted poster, prompting the desperate criminal to brutally murder her before resuming his flight. As he hid under a bridge that night, He Changchun was haunted by nightmares of the massacre he had committed in He Village. The dream revealed the roots of his violence: a bitter land dispute with his uncle, He Shanxiang, and the years of humiliation his parents endured.

After his uncle blocked his father’s burial, He Changchun had snapped, killing four of his relatives and leaving only a four-year-old child alive. Back at the station, Chief Xu contacted Leng Qiming to discuss the progress. Leng confirmed that the suspect’s characteristics and modus operandi matched the perpetrator of the Liuhe City family massacre. He noted that He Changchun was using a diversionary tactic, drawing police attention to Liuhe while he slipped toward Yunxi to cross the provincial border.

The situation grew more dire as reports came in that He Changchun had stabbed a traffic officer at a checkpoint, bringing his total number of victims to seven. Away from the intensity of the manhunt, Leng Qiming faced a different struggle at home. His retired father, suffering from worsening dementia and paranoia, had a violent episode. He accused Leng of being a traitor who had implanted a chip and an antenna in his brain to keep him awake.

In his confusion, the old man knocked over his medication, claiming the pills were actually batteries meant to harm him. The next day, Ye Qian spent his free time at the No-Name Diner, personally cooking meals for local sanitation workers. As he served the food, he reminisced about his first day reporting to the Major Crimes Unit.

Leng Qiming had tested him by aggressively questioning the price of his watch, but Ye Qian had remained calm and fearless, eventually earning Leng's respect and a place on the team. After finishing his work at the diner, Ye Qian met with Han Zhao to show her the photo of Xu Gang’s motorcycle. He hoped she could use her connections in the motorcycle community to find the bike.

Han Zhao noted that since the bike was leaking oil, it would eventually need repairs, and she promised to spread the word among dealers. During their conversation, she urged Ye Qian to stop searching for his missing love, Yumo, but he remained focused only on finding her. Meanwhile, a man named Bao Hei had successfully investigated the background of a woman named Dan Qing. He discovered that her real name was Chen Yumo.

Her history was tragic, involving a traumatic assault that forced her family to move away years ago. After her parents died, she returned to Yunxi and became involved with a man named Ah Huo. Leveraging her intelligence and ruthlessness, she had managed to take control of the drug supply market in the southwest, making her a formidable figure in the criminal underworld.
