Tianying and Tianci secretly returned to their troupe, hoping to avoid their master, Nine-Year-Old Red, but were caught red-handed. Seeing their plan failed, Tianci immediately took responsibility, claiming it was all his idea. Nine-Year-Old Red, understanding the truth, balanced Tianci's good deed of protecting his sister with his rule-breaking, letting him off with two extra hours of practice.

He then took Tianying into a room for a feigned punishment, making a loud show of chastising her to maintain his authority among the other apprentices, while in reality, he could not bring himself to truly punish his beloved daughter, whom he doted on and wished to see become a famous performer.

Nine-Year-Old Red told Tianying that the world was more dangerous than she imagined, especially in Dongjiang with its many temptations, which was why he kept her from going out. He explained that people are difficult to manage and hearts are unpredictable. He promised Tianying that once she became a famous performer, she would be free to go wherever she wished. Tianying, always quick-witted, then pleaded with her father to let her perform on stage that very night.

Meanwhile, Luo Fusheng and Lin Qikai were hosting Xu Xingcheng, who had just returned from abroad. These three shared a deep bond, having grown up together like brothers. Luo Fusheng, a motorcycle enthusiast, had picked up Xu Xingcheng and, during their ride back to the city, gave him a Niuji pan-fried bun he specifically bought for him, mentioning that Xu Xingcheng was probably the only person in Dongjiang who could make him run errands like a younger brother.

Hong Lan, who was clearly fond of Luo Fusheng, was also present. When Luo Fusheng's motorcycle broke down, he dismissed his subordinate, Luo Cheng, to repair it. Hong Lan eagerly offered him a ride in her car, but Luo Fusheng declined, to her annoyance. Lin Qikai then offered his car to Xu Xingcheng, but Luo Fusheng, feeling nostalgic for their childhood days, decided to race Xu Xingcheng instead.

He stripped off his coat, challenging Xu Xingcheng to a footrace, with the loser buying pan-fried buns. Luo Fusheng also had Lin Qikai send away other women who had accompanied Xu Xingcheng, deeming them unsuitable for the theater. Xu Xingcheng, initially annoyed about being brought to a theater—a place he loathed since childhood and preferred jazz over opera—soon learned from Luo Fusheng that they were going to see Nine-Year-Old Red’s first performance in Dongjiang, a renowned performer from Jiangnan.

Luo Fusheng insisted Xu Xingcheng attend, even using the pan-fried bun as leverage. At the Longfu Grand Theater, the performance was about to begin. Luo Fusheng, Xu Xingcheng, Lin Qikai, and Hong Lan were seated in the front row. Backstage, Nine-Year-Old Red was preparing to make his grand entrance, reminding his troupe to use all their skills to ensure a successful debut in Dongjiang.

However, just before stepping onto the stage, he suddenly felt unwell and dizzy, stating it was an old problem. Tianying urged him to seek medical attention and not perform, but Nine-Year-Old Red, staunchly adhering to the theater’s tradition, declared he would rather die on stage than miss his premiere.

As he began to sing, a local troublemaker, Hu Qi from Xinglong Pavilion, interrupted the performance by firing a gun, demanding a 50% share of the troupe's earnings for operating on his territory. Luo Fusheng, enraged by the disturbance, finally spoke up, chastising Hu Qi for disrespecting the Hong Gang and ruining both his tea time earlier at Fuman building and now his enjoyment of the opera.

Hu Qi, recalling a past incident where Luo Fusheng had personally disfigured him during a territorial dispute at Fuman building, challenged Luo Fusheng, ready to settle old and new scores. Believing his armed men outnumbered Luo Fusheng, Hu Qi was shocked when Luo Fusheng swiftly disarmed him and kicked him to the ground. Luo Fusheng then removed the bullets from Hu Qi’s gun. Hu Qi, revealing his hidden men, ordered them to attack.

Luo Fusheng, undeterred by their numbers, instructed Lin Qikai to take Hong Lan and Xu Xingcheng to safety, assuring them he could handle the situation alone. He boasted that they should know him better and give him half an hour, also insisting that Nine-Year-Old Red continue the performance, citing the Longfu Grand Theater’s and his own rule that "once the play starts, there is no reason to stop."

Nine-Year-Old Red, however, collapsed shortly after starting to sing, prompting Tianying to quickly take his place on stage. Hu Qi taunted Luo Fusheng, reiterating that if the play stopped, someone would die, but Tianying's continued performance earned Luo Fusheng's praise as he fought fiercely against Hu Qi and his men. Lin Qikai, having taken Hong Lan and Xu Xingcheng to safety, sent Luo Cheng and more men to assist Luo Fusheng.

Just as Luo Fusheng was about to disfigure Hu Qi, Luo Cheng arrived, allowing Hu Qi to escape. Luo Fusheng, keen to meet the talented young woman who had performed so captivatingly, rushed backstage, only to discover it was Tianying, the same girl he had argued with over the pan-fried bun earlier. He praised her performance and tried to introduce himself, but Tianying, recognizing him, was hostile.

She accused him of forcing her ailing father to perform, injuring her brother Tianci during the brawl, and causing damage to the theater, angrily telling him to leave and never watch her perform again. Luo Fusheng, surprised by her vehemence, tried to explain that in the heat of the fight, he couldn't distinguish Tianci as her brother or know about Nine-Year-Old Red's condition. At this critical moment, Xu Xingcheng, a doctor, arrived.

He quickly assessed Nine-Year-Old Red’s serious condition, stating that he needed immediate hospitalization. Luo Fusheng offered to provide a rickshaw, but Tianying, proud and resentful, refused his help. Seeing the urgency, Xu Xingcheng took over pulling the rickshaw himself, navigating through the heavy rain to get Nine-Year-Old Red to the hospital. Tianying watched him, touched by his quiet kindness and strength.

She reflected that she had never seen such a boy before, so gentle yet with broad, comforting shoulders and clear, pure eyes. At the hospital, after Nine-Year-Old Red was stabilized, the doctor confirmed that the timely medical attention, including the temporary treatment provided by Xu Xingcheng, had saved him. Nine-Year-Old Red was now out of danger. Tianying sincerely thanked Xu Xingcheng, introducing herself as Tianying, and he introduced himself as Xu Xingcheng.

He then noticed her smudged makeup and helped her clean it. As Xu Xingcheng was leaving with Luo Cheng, who had come to pick him up for a meeting at the Hilton Club, Tianying felt a growing fondness for him, deeply impressed by his composure and kindness in a time of crisis.
