Tong Guizhen, Xia Lei’s mother, privately convinced the homeroom teacher to separate her son and Meng Ge, the girl from Beijing. This public seating change confirmed Xia Lei’s infatuation to the entire school, leading him to lock himself in his room for a hunger strike. Outside the door, a dramatic scene unfolded as Tong Guizhen threatened to jump off the building if he didn't eat, while his father, Xia Limin, desperately played the mediator.
During the chaos, Zhang Xiaoman arrived at the window with a dish of shredded kelp. Sensing Xia Lei’s frustration, the two boys escaped out the window and slid down the heating pipes to a nearby park. There, Xiaoman pointed out that Xia Lei was actually lucky to have a mother who cared so much and suggested he should have communicated calmly instead of losing his temper. As the school’s Arts Performance approached, Zhang Xiaoman helped find poems for the recital.
Though he wasn't part of the program, he watched Xia Lei and Yan Xiaodan rehearse "To the Oak Tree" so intently that he memorized the entire poem. On the morning of the performance, Xia Lei realized that Xiaoman’s interest in the rehearsal was actually rooted in his feelings for Yan Xiaodan.
To give his friend a chance, Xia Lei deliberately ate raw onions with soybean paste until his voice became a raspy croak, using his "illness" as an excuse to recommend Xiaoman as his substitute. Under the spotlight, Xiaoman and Yan Xiaodan looked like a perfect pair as they recited the verses. Watching from the audience, Xia Lei felt a mixture of pride and a touch of sadness.
Back home, He Yuexiang watched the televised broadcast, but her failing eyesight made it hard to see her grandson on the small screen. Xiaoman later promised her that next time, he would ensure she could watch him from the front row. A few days later, the trendy Zhuang Sen lectured the boys on the difference between being handsome and being cool, arguing that while handsomeness meets expectations, "coolness" comes from breaking them.
To prove his point, he showed off his expensive new pager and took Xiaoman to Wang Tieda’s pool hall. Zhuang Sen was shocked to see Wang Tieda sporting a stylish "Aaron Kwok" hairstyle, feeling his status as a trendsetter was threatened. He immediately decided that he and Xiaoman needed to learn the guitar and perform at the plant’s anniversary celebration to reclaim their "cool" status. While knitting in the courtyard, He Yuexiang spoke to Xiaoman about his parents.
She revealed that his father, Zhang Jiaming, had been a local musician and his mother a talented dancer; the two had actually met during an anniversary performance years ago. Though his parents were gone, Xiaoman comforted his grandmother by promising never to leave her. During the anniversary auditions, Xiaoman and Zhuang Sen performed a spirited version of "We Workers Have the Power" and successfully made the cut.
Determined to get his grandmother a front-row seat for the show, Xiaoman approached Director Liu. The director explained that the best seats were reserved for leaders and model workers. Xiaoman tried to claim a seat by mentioning his grandfather’s military service, but he lacked the medals or certificates required for proof. When he asked his grandmother about the medals, she explained that his grandfather didn't fight for pieces of paper and that true heroism was about sacrifice, not certificates.
This conversation deeply moved Xiaoman, inspiring him to want to join the army one day. Meanwhile, Zhuang Sen’s attempt to blackmail Director Liu for tickets backfired, and they were briefly removed from the program. After a humble apology, Zhuang Sen struck a deal: they would help distribute all the leftover tickets to their classmates if the director gave them one prime seat. Director Liu relented and gave Xiaoman a ticket in the second row. Zhang Xiaoman hurried home to share the news with his grandmother, who proudly began measuring him for a new pair of wool pants.
