The sudden departure of his mother, followed soon after by his father, Zhang Jiaming, left Zhang Xiaoman in a state of shock. Unable to understand why his parents would abandon their home for the "outside world," Xiaoman decided to run away to find his father and demand an explanation. His loyal friends, Xia Lei and Yan Xiaodan, insisted on joining him.

As they followed the railroad tracks, Xia Lei spoke of his fascination with bridges, seeing them as mysterious links between different places, while he found railways too rigid. When Yan Xiaodan shared her dream of looking out from the factory’s highest point—the "Big Hero Hall"—to see the distant mountains, Xiaoman’s resentment boiled over. Their curiosity for the world beyond reminded him too much of his parents' abandonment, and he angrily ran off into the woods.

Back at the factory, the parents were in a frenzy. The news of the missing children spread quickly, and a volunteer search was organized. Ding Guoqiang, a labor model who had just returned from a medical injection at the hospital and was about to spend some "private time" with his wife, Zhou Huiying, immediately dropped everything to join the search.

The three children, meanwhile, had wandered deep into the mountains and sought shelter in a cave to escape a midnight rainstorm. Xia Lei worried that his mother, Tong Guizhen, would forbid him from playing with Xiaoman again out of anger. Xiaoman offered to take the blame, but Xia Lei refused to lie. Huddled by a fire, the two boys made a solemn vow to remain best friends for life.

Xiaoman quietly wondered if he had been abandoned because he wasn't good enough, but Xia Lei encouraged him to stay true to himself. At dawn, the trio found themselves near the factory’s public cemetery, where Xiaoman’s grandfather was buried. Recognizing the location, they followed the sound of the factory’s morning radio broadcast of "Ode to the Motherland" to find their way back. However, while crossing the Huiliu River, Xiaoman slipped and fell into the water.

Fortunately, Ding Guoqiang was nearby and pulled him to safety. In the aftermath, the community rallied around Xiaoman and his grandmother, He Yuexiang. Neighbor Xia Limin even used old bearings and wood to build a custom cart for He Yuexiang to help her move her goods. Six years passed, and by 1996, the vegetable stall had evolved into a newsstand. The once boyish Xiaoman had grown into a tall, clever young man.

On the first day of his second year in high school, he arrived at the gates with Xia Lei and Yan Xiaodan. They witnessed the school’s principal reprimanding the local bully, Feng Xiaobo, and an eccentric student named Zhuang Sen, whose trendy Western clothes drew both laughter and scolding. In the classroom, their new homeroom teacher, Ms. Tong, introduced a transfer student from Beijing named Meng Ge.

During the selection of class officers, Ms. Tong appointed Meng Ge as the study monitor and Yan Xiaodan to another post. Despite having the highest grades in the previous year, Xia Lei was relegated to the role of labor monitor. He returned home discouraged, feeling he had lost the position to Meng Ge simply because she was the factory director’s daughter.

His father, Xia Limin, lightened the mood with a joke, telling him that while he should aim for top universities, he shouldn't "take too big a step, or he'd pull his crotch." The peace was short-lived when Feng Xiaobo targeted Xiaoman, demanding 100 yuan. Xiaoman tried to distract him by offering a book called "Guidance for the Newlyweds" featuring color pictures, but the bully wouldn't back down.

Pushed to his limit, Xiaoman pulled a stick from his bag and struck Feng, chasing him onto a windowsill. As a crowd gathered, Yan Xiaodan arrived and doused the bully with a bucket of cold water, much to the amusement of the other students. When He Yuexiang heard of the fight, she disciplined Xiaoman with a rolling pin, fearing he was becoming a thug.

Xiaoman promised to stay on the right path, and his grandmother reminded him that a man's true strength lies in his mind, not his fists. Soon after, Ms. Tong assigned Xia Lei and Yan Xiaodan to perform a poetry recitation for the school variety show. While Xiaoman felt a pang of loneliness as his friends practiced, Xia Lei became increasingly infatuated with Meng Ge.

After catching Xia Lei daydreaming over a poem titled "If I Love You" and seeing the name "Madeleine" (Meng Ge's English name) written inside, his mother, Tong Guizhen, grew concerned about a premature romance and confiscated the book.
