> Resumos de Our Dazzling Days
"""[Recap]""" In 2007, a high-stakes boxing match in Japan serves as the backdrop for a confrontation that reaches far beyond the ring. Miyamura Masao, a local favorite seeking revenge for a previous loss, steps out to reclaim his honor against Zhang Xiaoman, a young man from the factory mines of Northeast China who has been riding a ten-fight winning streak. Behind the scenes, the atmosphere is thick with desperation.
Watanabe, the gym owner, and the manager Yu Qiangbei have gambled the gym’s entire fortune on one specific outcome: Xiaoman must go down in the third round. Before the match, Yu Qiangbei corners Xiaoman, warning him that those who break the rules end up in the depths of Tokyo Bay, but Xiaoman remains unmoved.
The voice of his old friend, Yan Xiaodan, echoes in his mind, speaking of the insanity of doing the same thing over and over while expecting different results. He realizes it is time to wake up and live a different life. The bell rings, and Xiaoman fights with a ferocity that ignores all warnings. He refuses to throw the fight, declaring that he never engages in such deception.
His punches land with bone-deep precision, ending the match prematurely and ruining Watanabe’s gamble. Enraged, Watanabe leads a group of over a dozen men to corner Xiaoman at a pier. Despite his fighting skills, Xiaoman is overwhelmed. He returns the money in a desperate bid for mercy, but he is ultimately beaten and pushed into the dark, freezing waters of the bay.
In that final moment of descent, his mind drifts back to his childhood in the snow of Tiexi City, the smoke of the East Chemical Plant, and the father who raised him with a heavy hand and a distant heart. The story shifts back to the early 1990s in Tiexi City, a massive industrial complex hidden in a remote valley.
Known to outsiders as the East Chemical Plant (Donghua Plant), it is a secretive facility relocated from the border decades earlier to produce gunpowder. Zhang Xiaoman is a true son of the factory, born in its staff hospital and raised in its labyrinthine dormitories. A rambunctious child, he is often pursued through the streets by his father, Zhang Jiaming, who wields an electrician’s belt to discipline him.
One afternoon, Xiaoman encounters a new boy named Xia Lei, whose family has just moved from the old plant area. They bond over a shared "escape" from their parents, and Xiaoman shows him a safe spot to hide, sharing roasted corn and promising to protect him from any trouble. On Xia Lei's first day at school, the introverted boy barely manages to state his name and gender before taking his seat next to Xiaoman.
Their teacher, Ms. Niu, takes the opportunity to reinforce the plant’s strict confidentiality rules. She warns the children that if anyone outside asks what the factory produces, they must strictly answer "pesticides and fertilizers," as even distant relatives could be spies. Xiaoman, never one to stay quiet, questions the logic of trusting close relatives who might tell their own distant family members.
His persistence earns him a mocking lecture from Ms. Niu, who tells him that if he cannot follow directions, he should just tell people he is a "little piglet" who knows nothing but eating. Life in the factory town is governed by its own unique social hierarchy. After school, the children watch the shift change, a tidal wave of workers on bicycles. Xiaoman warns Xia Lei to watch out for two things: big trucks and Mr. Ding.
Ding Guoqiang is a former platoon leader and a war hero who was wounded by an enemy’s final bullet just before victory. The injury requires monthly medication that only stays effective for one hour, creating a frantic window where he must rush home to his wife. During one of these sprints, a car driven by the newly appointed Director Meng Yunman blocks his path.
Without hesitating, Mr. Ding slaps the director and continues his race home, a feat of defiance that leaves the local kids in awe. At home, Zhang Jiaming’s life is a shadow of its former glory. Once a respected level-eight fitter, the departure of his wife turned him into a "level-eight alcoholic." He spends his evenings drinking and playing a melancholic harmonica, often turning violent when the alcohol takes hold.
Xiaoman quietly cleans the house, wondering if his life would have been more gentle if his mother had stayed. During the plant’s 24th anniversary, the school choir performs. Director Meng, showing a surprisingly forgiving nature, gives a speech about the plant's future in the new century. Mr. Ding, feeling sheepish about the earlier incident, apologizes to the director on stage while receiving his award as a model worker. The highlight of the celebration is Yan Xiaodan singing "Farewell."
Xiaoman watches from behind the curtain, captivated by the girl who is the daughter of Chief Engineer Yan Wenyuan. Despite her gentle appearance and beautiful voice, Xiaodan is a wild spirit known for climbing trees to raid bird nests and secretly lighting firecrackers. For Xiaoman, however, she is one of a kind.
After the show, Xiaoman goes to buy popsicles from a woman named Ms. Li, but they get into a heated argument when she refuses to let him store his extra popsicles while he runs home. Enraged, Xiaoman eats five popsicles on the spot to spite her, calling her a "White Bone Demon." The conflict follows him home when Ms. Li shows up for dinner as his father’s new girlfriend.
Xiaoman refuses to apologize, leading to a blowout that sends him fleeing to Xia Lei’s house. There, he experiences the warmth of a functional family for the first time, as Xia Lei’s parents, Tong Guizhen and Xia Limin, welcome him with a hearty meal. Later, Xiaoman’s frustration boils over, and he plays a prank by putting sticky soybean paste in Ms. Li's coat pocket. His father retaliates with a severe beating.
While his grandmother, He Yuexiang, treats his wounds with red medicine, she tells him stories of his grandfather’s bravery in the Korean War, assuring Xiaoman that he takes after the old hero. At school, Xiaoman is the only student to nominate Xia Lei for the model student award, showing a loyalty that Xia Lei’s mother deeply appreciates.
For a brief moment, it seems things might change at home; Zhang Jiaming stays sober one evening and plays the harmonica to lull Xiaoman to sleep. However, the next day brings a harsh reality. Grandma delivers the news that Zhang Jiaming has left for the south with Ms. Li, seeking a world beyond the confines of the East Chemical Plant. He leaves a note explaining that he does not want to be trapped in such a small place forever. Without a tear, Xiaoman packs his few belongings and moves in with his grandmother, closing one chapter of his life in the factory town.
