Following their recent riverside outing, photos of Gao Haiming and Lin Huan’er appeared on the front page of a gossip magazine, sparking fury in Gao Mingshan and leaving Xie Wanjun heartbroken. Despite the public spectacle, Huan’er felt a sense of bitter irony; while she had intended to use a calculated move to manipulate Haiming, she realized he had outmaneuvered her, treating her merely as a "catalyst" for his own plans without truly letting her into his life.

Her friend, Zhu Mengmeng, warned her that such games were dangerous, especially with the impending return of Ou Xiaojue. The next morning at the office, rumors swirled as their boss, Fang Yuan, offered Huan’er a promotion and a bonus for her role in the Letao deal. Surprisingly, Huan’er turned him down, insisting she preferred being a "runner" and requested that any rewards be credited to her manager, Xiang Lingling.

Having eavesdropped on the call, a delighted Xiang Lingling—now insisting Huan’er call her "Lingling"—instructed the staff to fully support Huan’er's work. However, the peace was short-lived when Xie Wanjun called, demanding that Huan’er personally deliver a contract to Rose Manor on Nantong Mountain. Though Huan’er initially refused, a warning from her internal "system" about potential punishment forced her to comply. By the time the delivery was finished, Huan’er had missed the final 5:00 PM bus by a single minute.

Stranded in the remote wilderness as rain began to pour, she lamented the lack of originality in her life's script. Back at the office, Luo Zhou reported the situation to Haiming, who felt a surge of concern. Just then, Huan’er called him from a phone booth that seemed to magically appear. She kept the call brief, asking him to inform her family that she might not make it home, before finally admitting she needed him to save her.

The line cut out before she could give her full location, leaving Haiming to search for any place near Nantong Mountain starting with "Rose." Haiming didn't show up in a flashy car himself; instead, he arranged for a taxi driver to find her. He prepared a care package—including a towel, a jacket, clean socks, and slippers—and instructed the driver to claim the items were his own.

When the taxi arrived, Huan’er was so relieved she convinced herself the driver was a manifestation of the "system" delivering a "Newbie Pack." After the taxi pulled away, Haiming quietly stepped out from the shadows to retrieve the wet shoes Huan’er had left behind. Huan’er eventually reached the Fuchuang Group office late that night to return the files. Seeing her soaking wet, Xie Wanjun felt a flicker of triumph, but Huan’er confronted her directly.

She argued that targeting her wouldn't win Haiming’s heart and advised Wanjun to stop being a supporting character in someone else’s story and become the "female lead" of her own life. The following day, despite a cold, Huan’er insisted on delivering another marketing proposal. Meanwhile, Wanjun took the advice about being proactive to heart. She arrived at Haiming’s office with homemade cookies, trying to use their childhood history to stir his emotions.

When Huan’er walked in, she ruined the moment by pointing out that Haiming had quit sugar long ago. Furious, Wanjun tried to strike Huan’er, but Haiming instantly blocked her, defending Huan’er as his partner. After Wanjun stormed out, Haiming noticed Huan’er’s fever and took her home himself. While Huan'er rested, she received a frantic message about debt collectors at her family home. She rushed back to find several imposing men in her living room, but the crisis was a ruse.

Her younger sister, Lin Le’er, exposed that their father had conspired to lure Huan’er back because she hadn't visited in a long time. However, the "men in black" were actually employees sent by Gao Mingshan to bring her to a meeting. The final confrontation took place at a cigar bar. Unknown to Huan’er, Mingshan had Haiming on a live phone call, intending to expose her supposed greed.

Mingshan mocked her for the magazine scandal and asked how much money it would take for her to leave his son. Huan’er didn't flinch; she admitted her ambitions but told Mingshan that he didn't truly understand his son’s needs. In a final act of defiance, she returned the 50,000 yuan Mingshan had given her previously and walked out—only to find Haiming standing right outside the door, having heard everything.
