After hearing sounds of people approaching, Jiang Baiyu quickly sought refuge in a large jar. To his surprise, he found Shui Wuxia already hiding inside, and both were startled to see each other. He swiftly joined her in the jar. Two soldiers entered the room, searching around. Inside the jar, both Jiang Baiyu and Shui Wuxia wondered why the other was there, giving the same answer: they were hiding from someone.

Suddenly, Shui Wuxia spotted a bug on Jiang Baiyu's shoulder. Alarmed, he let out a gasp, but Shui Wuxia quickly covered his mouth. The sound, however, was heard by the soldiers, who came to investigate. Just then, an announcement from outside reported that the person they were looking for had been found, and the soldiers left. Jiang Baiyu and Shui Wuxia emerged from the jar, but before they could leave, they overheard orders for several guards to remain stationed outside.

They quickly scanned the surroundings and escaped through a window. Outside, they saw an official wagon from Jiang Province. The wagon had broken down, forcing the officers to stop for repairs. They watched as someone hurriedly hid inside a chest on the wagon, an act witnessed not only by Jiang Baiyu and Shui Wuxia but also by a group of people searching for the owner of the Golden Phoenix Pin.

Realizing the owner of the Golden Phoenix Pin was in a chest on the supply wagon, Jiang Baiyu considered hijacking the vehicle. However, Zhe Zhi strongly advised against it, explaining that it was a government wagon and any mishap could be fatal. Jiang Baiyu insisted, stating that this was the closest they had been to the truth in years, a chance he couldn't miss.

Zhe Zhi, with a sigh, informed him that the supplies being transported to Jiang Province contained items for the upcoming Double Seventh Lantern Festival and would arrive in about two days. Meanwhile, Ba Xi urged Shui Wuxia not to be so consumed by her obsession, reminding her that the pursuit of the Golden Phoenix Pin was becoming increasingly risky, especially with Jiang Baiyu now involved and the initial clues proving unreliable.

Shui Wuxia acknowledged that her obsession was deep, admitting that whether or not she found the pin, her brother was already gone. Ba Xi then reminded her that life must go on and asked how Shui Wuxia planned to spend the Double Seventh Festival. Shui Wuxia, feeling alone, saw no reason to celebrate.

Ba Xi then asked if Shui Wuxia had recently experienced blushing, a fast heartbeat, or sweaty palms, to which Shui Wuxia’s reaction suggested these symptoms were indeed present. Ba Xi told her about the grand Double Seventh Lantern Festival in Jiang Province, where all the young men and women of Chong'an would gather, implying Shui Wuxia would surely want to invite someone special to attend with her, and handed her a flyer.

Jiang Tianling, engrossed in a book titled "Love's 36 Strategies," read about giving special gifts on special occasions, understanding it meant not to miss a joyous holiday and to give a gold hairpin to spend the holiday with a loved one. Jiang Baiyu, wanting to attend the Double Seventh Lantern Festival, approached Jiang Tianling and prompted him to ask Old Madam Jiang for permission. Jiang Baiyu then eagerly dragged Jiang Tianling to see her.

Old Madam Jiang, proud of Jiang Tianling's efforts in North Bay Village, readily agreed to his request for a day off to tour Jiang Province, but stipulated that Jiang Baiyu would have to remain behind to study for his upcoming exams. Jiang Baiyu quickly interjected, claiming he needed to accompany his younger brother to prevent him from getting lost.

Old Madam Jiang saw through his pretense, realizing it was Jiang Baiyu who truly desired to go to Jiang Province, and reiterated her condition that he would only be allowed to participate if he excelled in his upcoming exams. During a study session, Jiang Baiyu and Shui Wuxia exhibited symptoms resembling a cold.

Jiang Tianling recalled that the initial signs of seasonal contagion were very similar to a common cold, though the contagion was much more severe and could be life-threatening within two days. He and Qi Delong dismissed the possibility, believing neither Jiang Baiyu nor Shui Wuxia had been to North Bay Village where the illness originated. However, Jiang Baiyu and Shui Wuxia, knowing they "had" visited North Bay Village, grew concerned about having contracted the seasonal contagion.

By the next day, their symptoms appeared to worsen. Since the seasonal contagion typically took about two days to confirm, they wouldn't know their diagnosis until the following day. Shui Wuxia proposed they treat their illness as a cold for now, and to be safe, they should both stay home from school for the next two days. During their illness, they attempted to treat themselves with "fishy grass" medicine, comically struggling to consume it, which deepened their bond.

One evening, Jiang Tianling brought them an incense burner filled with aromatic coal, expressing concern they might get cold. Shui Wuxia thanked him but declined the gift, falsely claiming she already felt much better and needed to tutor Jiang Baiyu. Jiang Baiyu quickly agreed, sending Jiang Tianling away to focus on his own studies, fearing potential contagion. Later that night, Jiang Baiyu felt dizzy and cold.

Shui Wuxia expressed gratitude to Jiang Baiyu for enduring the hardships of North Bay Village with him, to which he replied, calling her "Master Shui" and stating they were "on the same side." As he suggested calling Yun Cheng for medicine, Shui Wuxia suddenly collapsed with a fever. Jiang Baiyu quickly carried her to bed and stayed by her side, caring for her throughout the night. The next morning, Jiang Baiyu and Shui Wuxia woke up feeling much better.

Jiang Baiyu was no longer dizzy, and Shui Wuxia’s fever had subsided. They realized the two-day incubation period had passed, confirming they had not contracted the seasonal contagion. Overjoyed, they shared an excited embrace. Shui Wuxia immediately warned Jiang Baiyu not to speak of what happened the previous night, to which he playfully retorted that it would depend on his mood.

Determined to earn his trip to Jiang Province for the Double Seventh Lantern Festival, Jiang Baiyu enthusiastically dedicated himself to his studies. Shui Wuxia, in the presence of Jiang Tianling, helped him by applying a color-coding system for his books, a method she learned from her brother: golden for mastered content, silver for areas needing improvement, and green for concepts not yet understood. Jiang Tianling commented positively on the method's clarity.

Jiang Baiyu looked at his book, noting it was almost entirely covered in green, signifying he had yet to grasp most of the material. Shui Wuxia reassured him that they would remove a green label each time he conquered a topic, expressing the goal that with his effort, all the green labels would be gone by the end of the day. The final assessment was set in a cave outside the city.

They were told to split into two groups and navigate three stages, with the first to complete them being declared the winner. Jiang Baiyu entered the pitch-black cave with Shui Wuxia. In the darkness, Jiang Baiyu stumbled and fell, complaining about the lack of light and his childhood fear of the dark, insisting Shui Wuxia protect him. As they cautiously made their way through, they reached a brightly lit area.

Jiang Baiyu reached out and touched what he believed to be a mechanism, causing a sudden reaction that led Shui Wuxia to pull him close. He quickly clarified his action. Shui Wuxia speculated that Instructor Hou, a highly praised inspector known for his work on cases like the Nan An Salt Merchant Corruption Case and the Wu Mian Assassination Case, designed the cave to prepare them for the real challenges of an inspector’s daily life.

When they saw an unexpected meal appear, Shui Wuxia warned against touching it, fearing it might be poisoned. Jiang Baiyu questioned whether such "norms" were truly necessary for an inspector if they simply chose not to become one, but she dismissed his doubts. He then found another mechanism.
