Song Xiu asked Xu Jie if he should seize a better opportunity, and Xu Jie assured him that no matter what he chose to do, she would always support him. Later, back in their hotel room, Chen Ran confided in Xu Jie about her increasingly formal relationship with Jian Peiran. She lamented that since he went to the northeast, their interactions had become "increasingly polite," giving the superficial impression of understanding each other's choices, but actually signifying a growing distance.
She even expressed a preference for arguments over such politeness. Xu Jie, while affirming she was not single, received an unexpected call from Sun Zhewei, to which she responded with an exasperated "Are you crazy?" before hanging up. That night, Xu Jie messaged Song Xiu, asking if he was asleep, and he simply replied, "Mhm, good night." The next morning, Song Xiu had already checked out, messaging Xu Jie that he left early so as not to disturb her work.
When Chen Ran noticed Xu Jie's dark circles, Xu Jie attributed it to not being used to sharing a room, a comment Chen Ran lightly challenged as it wasn't her first time. Xu Jie and Chen Ran then met with Chairman Wan of Feilaiyin, presenting a video as evidence. Xu Jie explained that a renowned Chinese company like Feilaiyin being involved in counterfeit shoe production was unacceptable in contemporary society.
Chairman Wan, skeptical and questioning why they, instead of Attorney Tang or Attorney Bai, were sent, was informed by Chen Ran that Director Li had specifically assigned them due to intelligence suggesting Feilaiyin was producing counterfeit Yadian shoes, and that Yadian was already preparing legal action. Chairman Wan vehemently denied any knowledge of counterfeiting by Feilaiyin's management, stating he would question the person in the video, Chen Shuo, and "sue him if necessary."
Chen Ran strategically advised him to "consult Lawyer Bai" if he decided to sue. Furious, Chairman Wan immediately called Bai Ning, demanding an explanation. Bai Ning, promising to rush to Fumen, privately felt that Chen Ran and Xu Jie's actions were a deliberate attempt to undermine her and gain an advantage in the senior partner competition. She confided in Tang Ying, who advised her to "appease Chairman Wan's feelings" while she would "handle Director Li."
Meanwhile, Xu Jie explained to Chen Ran that their strategy was to lead Bai Ning into advising a private settlement, thereby forcing her to get Chen Shuo to confess. Chen Ran, in turn, instructed Liu Fang to discreetly monitor when Director Tang met with Director Li. Song Xiu later presented his resignation to Li Gongming, stating he had "made up his mind."
Li Gongming expressed concern, calling it "not a wise decision" and noting that Song Xiu's "previous efforts might go to waste." He assured Song Xiu that his removal from the Feilaiyin case was due to "other considerations," not poor performance, and that there was "hardly anyone who can replace" him in his team. Song Xiu thanked Li Gongming for his "kindness" and "guidance" but insisted he needed "more opportunities to improve," mentioning Chengtai as a potential next step.
As he packed his belongings, a colleague expressed sadness, but Song Xiu explained that while Mingtang was his "starting point," he felt he might "not be suited for this elite firm," and that continuous unrecognized effort could erode one's confidence. He reflected on his journey at Mingtang, from an empty-handed new graduate to leaving with "heavy boxes and so-called pursuits."
Later, Song Xiu met Director Huang, who praised his excellent work on the Feilaiyin case, acknowledging that such cases are often reassigned to senior partners, and encouraged him not to be discouraged. Director Huang also informed Song Xiu that he had ensured Zhang Chuang's complaint against him with the bar association was withdrawn.
Recognizing Song Xiu as a "promising young and exceptionally talented lawyer," Director Huang offered him a position at Chengtai, inviting him to start the following day, promising abundant case sources and opportunities for trial work beyond just out-of-court settlements. Meanwhile, Bai Ning fiercely confronted Xu Jie and Chen Ran in Fumen, accusing them of trying to "embarrass Mingtang" or "humiliate" her by investigating their client.
She implied they were using Feilaiyin as a "trophy case" to gain an advantage in the senior partner competition. Chen Ran denied any connection to that competition. Bai Ning then turned on Xu Jie, accusing her of being "shameless" in pursuing cases, especially after Bai Ning had kept Xu Jie's relationship with Song Xiu a secret.
Xu Jie retorted that she had never tried to steal cases and that Bai Ning's secrecy was "your own wishful thinking," before walking away angrily. Chen Ran reiterated to Bai Ning that she had "no interest in competing for senior partnership" and proposed they discuss and resolve any work issues. Back in their room, Chen Ran, now aware of Xu Jie and Song Xiu's relationship, inquired about Song Xiu's resignation.
Xu Jie admitted she was "not quite used to" the change, feeling that "a relationship that was under control suddenly started spiraling out of control." Chen Ran mused that relationships involve "love and conflict," with each person trying to "take the initiative" to find "a comfortable balance," and she sensed her relationship with Jian Peiran might be "reaching the point of confrontation." Xu Jie then inquired why Bai Ning was so confrontational.
Chen Ran explained that Bai Ning felt Xu Jie's arrival was "unexpected," as Bai Ning, once Tang Ying's sole female disciple, had seen the "spotlight at the firm shift" to Xu Jie, leading to Bai Ning's "pride at work" perceiving Xu Jie as an "imagined rival."
After learning from Liu Fang that Director Tang had met with Director Li, Chen Ran received a message from Li Gongming instructing her and Xu Jie to "meet Wu Hong immediately" as "Chairman Wan has already made a move" and "push for a settlement."
Meeting with Wu Hong, the Asia CEO of Yadian, they learned that Yadian valued Feilaiyin's stable quality and did not wish to replace them, but if counterfeiting was proven, Yadian's brand reputation and stock price would be severely impacted, leaving them no choice but to "sue." Meanwhile, Chairman Wan directly confronted Chen Shuo about his involvement in producing counterfeit shoes. Chen Shuo, an old employee, adamantly denied the accusations, even suggesting they "see you in court."
Bai Ning, in an attempt to handle the situation privately, had also confronted Chen Shuo, threatening him with severe legal penalties for trademark counterfeiting and embezzlement, but offering to waive civil litigation if he signed a confession. Chen Shuo refused to sign, maintaining his innocence and reiterating his willingness to go to court. Later, Chen Ran conceded to Xu Jie that their plan to get Chen Shuo to sign a confession through Bai Ning had failed, saying, "We lost."
Xu Jie disagreed, asserting, "We didn't lose," explaining that the core issue of counterfeit shoe production remained unresolved, and the true key was understanding Chen Shuo's relationship with Chairman Wan. She proposed that she would speak with Chen Shuo, while Chen Ran would contact Chairman Wan, ensuring they stayed in touch. Chen Ran approached Chairman Wan, suggesting that merely resolving the case in court wouldn't address Feilaiyin's deeper internal issues.
She reminded him that Chen Shuo was an old employee who had helped him "build the company from the ground up" and must have "deep feelings for Feilaiyin," prompting Chairman Wan to consider "why he did this." Meanwhile, Xu Jie found Chen Shuo drinking alone at a barbecue stall. She challenged his actions, asking how his family and coworkers would view him if his counterfeiting activities were exposed, calling such behavior "profit-driven" and "untrustworthy."
Chen Shuo, deeply hurt, refuted the accusation, proclaiming that he and Chairman Wan had "built Feilaiyin step by step" over "over a decade," tirelessly working for the company. He expressed his resentment that Chairman Wan now invested "tens of millions annually building that online mall" and pursuing "new technologies," while he, who oversaw the production of "over 100 million shoes annually" from his workshop, felt undervalued.
He complained that "youngsters who just type and click mice" now earned more than the long-serving factory workers, making it hard for him to accept. Xu Jie urged him to communicate his feelings directly to Chairman Wan instead of resorting to "underhanded methods." Chen Shuo, however, bitterly responded that Chairman Wan "stopped treating us as brothers long ago" and questioned where such a conversation could even take place, sarcastically mentioning Chairman Wan's luxury RV or office "surrounded by female secretaries."
Unbeknownst to Chen Shuo, Chairman Wan had been listening nearby. Stepping forward, Chairman Wan admitted, "I had no idea you had so many thoughts in your heart. It seems it's my fault. I neglected you all. I owe you an apology." He then earnestly asked Chen Shuo, "What should I do to live up to your expectations?"
