Although Song Xiu claimed he wasn't upset since she told him so frankly, he was clearly affected by the revelation.
The wedding ceremony began, and the host welcomed He Gang and Fang Pu. He Gang delivered a heartfelt speech, confessing his past fear of marriage and his skepticism about love, which he attributed to his profession. However, meeting Fang Pu changed his perspective, teaching him that love means sharing both joy and sorrow. The couple exchanged rings amidst cheers.
Later, when Fang Pu tossed her bouquet, it unexpectedly landed near Sun Zhewei, causing a brief moment of awkwardness among the guests. Seizing the moment, Sun Zhewei introduced himself as a new member of Chengtai Law Firm. He then announced that he had come to Jinghai to win back a cherished girl he once failed to appreciate, looking directly at Xu Jie as he spoke.

He praised Song Xiu as a promising young lawyer and extended an invitation for him to consider joining Chengtai. The next morning, Xu Jie arrived at Mingtang Law Firm to discover her private photos, taken years ago with a former boyfriend, had been widely distributed via the firm's email system, becoming the subject of widespread gossip. During a firm meeting, Administrative Director Bai Ning raised concerns that the leaked photos would damage Mingtang's image. However, Chen Ran promptly interjected, defending Xu Jie by emphasizing that the photos were illegally obtained and should not be spread.
Xu Jie then spoke for herself, clarifying that the pictures were old, taken with a former boyfriend years ago, and while not explicit, they were now being used against her. She apologized if her past actions caused reputational harm to the firm but asserted she had committed no wrongdoing. Chen Ran further passionately defended Xu Jie, arguing that the photos simply depicted a couple in love and that Xu Jie was the victim, not someone to be bullied.
Li Gongming, the senior partner, disclosed that he was aware of the photos before inviting Xu Jie to Mingtang. He stressed the importance of unity within the firm, especially given Chengtai's aggressive tactics, and urged everyone to handle the situation maturely. Xu Jie concluded by saying she would not let the incident affect her. Later, Chen Ran brought Xu Jie a sweet drink, trying to cheer her up.
Xu Jie admitted that she came to Jinghai to escape trouble but seemed to attract it, feeling fated to encounter troublemakers. Chen Ran praised Xu Jie's composure and impassioned speech during the meeting, recalling the strong woman she first met. Xu Jie expressed that she found direct conversations more comforting than pity and even joked about her good figure in the leaked photos. Chen Ran reassured her, promising to always be there for her.
Despite his hesitation, Song Xiu went for an interview at Chengtai Law Firm, where he impressed the recruiters. Chen Ran admitted she was mentally preparing for the worst but struggled with the idea of facing a "father who committed crimes." Jian Peiran reassured her, promising to face it with her and to return home in a couple of days to support her. Li Gongming summoned Chen Ran and Xu Jie to his office, first checking on the progress of Chen Ran's father's accounts.
He then revealed confidential information: the overseas sports brand Yadian, successful in the international market, intended to expand into China next year and sought Mingtang as its legal counsel. However, Yadian suspected that Feilaiyin, one of Mingtang's existing partner companies, was manufacturing counterfeit versions of their shoes. Although Chen Ran and Xu Jie expressed skepticism, citing Feilaiyin's strong OEM business, Li Gongming confirmed Yadian had evidence.
He explained that a preliminary investigation by Bai Ning, involving a local materials lab, could not definitively confirm the counterfeit materials were 100% from Feilaiyin. Therefore, Li Gongming assigned Chen Ran and Xu Jie to thoroughly investigate the matter, authorizing all their expenses using his personal reimbursement code. Chen Ran expressed strong reservations about the case, viewing it as unethical to actively prove an existing client guilty just to attract a larger potential new client.
She worried they might alienate Feilaiyin without securing Yadian. Xu Jie, however, emphasized the significant financial gain Yadian could bring—50 million annually compared to Feilaiyin's 10 million—and suggested this would boost their chances of becoming senior partners. She argued that Feilaiyin was no longer Chen Ran's personal client, and they should consider the firm's broader interests without violating professional ethics.
While acknowledging the risk of losing both clients, Xu Jie insisted their immediate goal was to uncover who was producing the counterfeit Yadian shoes, pressing Chen Ran for a definitive answer on whether she would join the investigation. Chen Ran and Xu Jie prepared for their business trip to Fumen to investigate the counterfeit shoes. As Xu Jie was leaving, Song Xiu saw her off.
They briefly encountered Sun Zhewei, who was being praised for having secured an investment for a hospital. Song Xiu then praised Xu Jie's composure in the face of Sun Zhewei. On the plane, Xu Jie explained to Chen Ran that they wouldn't operate as lawyers in Fumen; instead, she had used her connections to find a local "power broker" to facilitate their discreet investigation into the illicit shoe factories, a task that required specific techniques and local introductions.
Chen Ran recalled her childhood experiences in Fumen where outsiders were often exploited. Upon arrival at their destination, they met Mr. Yin, who had been informed of their visit by "Boss Zheng" and agreed to guide them. Xu Jie assured Chen Ran that the expenses for their contact would be covered.
