Gu Bingyu returned to town after an escort mission and stopped at a breakfast stall for his usual meal. Sensing he was being followed, he intentionally led his pursuers to an inn. Bi Zhi and Su Beilu watched the front entrance, but after Gu Bingyu failed to emerge for a long time, they grew suspicious. Su Beilu checked for a back door but found only one exit.

They eventually entered the inn and searched the "Heaven" room on the second floor. Su Beilu noted that the window was shut and the sill was clean, deducing from his knowledge of television tropes that the target hadn't escaped that way. In reality, Gu Huaijin had cleverly disguised herself as her female self to slip past them unnoticed. In the city, Pu Jingtang was shaken after spotting the supposedly deceased Gu Huaijin near the Guangji Apothecary.

He rushed to the Gu residence to confront Gu Bingyu, insisting that his vision was clear despite the years that had passed. Gu Bingyu—who was actually Gu Huaijin in disguise—maintained that her sister had died in her arms during the robbery three years ago. She suggested that Pu Jingtang’s grief had manifested as hallucinations and warned him that his obsession would lead to his ruin.

Devastated and feeling like a mere lodger who was unworthy of even guarding her grave, Pu Jingtang retreated to his music, playing sorrowful tunes that reflected his isolation. By nightfall, Bi Zhi and Su Beilu returned to the inn and finally uncovered the truth. Bi Zhi noticed an empty bundle that had likely contained women’s clothing and threatened to bring in the residence butler to identify the occupant. Cornered, Gu Huaijin revealed her secret.

She explained that during a tragic escort mission years ago, her brother, the real Gu Bingyu, sacrificed his life to save her. Before dying, he gave her the Liuqing Comb, a mystical item capable of shifting one's gender appearance. Following his wish to preserve the Gu family name, she had been using the comb to transform into his likeness to run the agency.

Bi Zhi requested the return of the comb, explaining it was a lost heirloom belonging to a friend. Gu Huaijin agreed to hand it over once she had avenged her family. Meanwhile, the former Governor of Cangzhou, Du Wenhua, lived in a state of extreme paranoia, refusing to leave his home for fear of assassins. His adopted son, the Grand Coordinator, visited to invite him to his grandson Lian’s wedding.

Despite his claim that filial piety meant nothing to him, Du Wenhua eventually agreed to attend the banquet, but only after his servants meticulously tasted his food for poison. Bi Zhi and Su Beilu attended the wedding at the Du residence, noting the presence of several elite martial arts masters among the guests.

During a ritual Nuo dance intended to ward off evil, an assassin disguised as a performer attempted to kill Du Wenhua but was swiftly subdued by hidden guards. Du Wenhua mocked the attempt, believing he was in total control. However, during the marriage ritual, the real threat emerged. Gu Huaijin had disguised herself as the bride, and during the final bow, she took Du Wenhua hostage.

She publicly accused him of masterminding the massacre of the Gu family to cover up his embezzlement of disaster relief funds, revealing that the original escort mission had been carrying evidence of his corruption. Gu Huaijin was prepared to die for her revenge, but Pu Jingtang suddenly stormed the hall to fight by her side. Surrounded by soldiers, their situation was dire until Bi Zhi and Su Beilu intervened.

By seizing the groom, Lian, as a hostage, they forced the guards to stand down, allowing Gu Huaijin and Pu Jingtang to escape on horseback. Once safe, Gu Huaijin fulfilled her promise and gave the Liuqing Comb to Bi Zhi. Encouraged by Su Beilu’s words that women in the future could achieve greatness without hiding their identities, she chose to lead the agency as herself.

She eventually became the legendary "ghost-masked escort," a figure whose skills and cold mask struck fear into bandits across the land. The story then shifted to Su Beilu’s past. In October 2005, while traveling to Ninghai with his parents, their car was struck by a black SUV. The horrific accident claimed the lives of both his parents, leaving Su Beilu an orphan.

It was revealed that Bi Zhi, traveling through time, had been the mysterious figure who pulled the young Su Beilu from the wreckage. Back in the present at the Yashe, Su Beilu reflected on the home he had lost while spending time with his friend Chun Ge and his dog, Tuanzi. Bi Zhi watched him, reminded of the warning that time travelers should avoid forming attachments to prevent the tragic cycles of history from repeating.
