Boss Dong happened to pass by the mysterious Yashe and, driven by curiosity, stepped inside to find Su Beilu watching over the shop. Upon learning that the business belonged to Bi Zhi, Dong was both surprised and delighted. Su Beilu showed him around, though Dong was initially skeptical of a Northern Song Dynasty Ru Ware plate, even joking that his own family used similar dishes for everyday meals.
However, as Bi Zhi returned and the fragrant scent of agarwood filled the room, Dong examined the exquisite Jun kiln tea cups and realized the shop was a treasure trove of authentic masterpieces. Eager to have his own collection appraised, Dong hurried home to fetch his antiques, promising to return soon. With Dong gone, Bi Zhi prepared for a trip to Tianguang Market and brought Su Beilu along.
Su Beilu was eager to visit the magical realm where time stands still, noting he still had annual leave to use. They brought a special gift for the Market Lord: several cups of trendy bubble tea.
Su Beilu went into great detail describing the drink as a "Glutinous Bubble Milk Foam Tea with Sesame, Berry, Mango, and Peach," a name so complex the Market Lord’s attendant, Chu Qiu, had to test it for poison before the Market Lord would take a sip. Delighted by the sweet treat, the Market Lord provided Bi Zhi with the coordinates for his next target: the Mermaid Candle and a girl named Chan.
Bi Zhi traveled back to a chaotic era marked by war and famine. Amidst this misery, a young girl named Chan found a mysterious blue candle and lit it in a derelict courtyard to keep away the cold. The candlelight flickered and transformed into a beautiful woman who revealed herself as the Mermaid of Dongting. The next day, after Chan’s small portion of famine grain was snatched away by a ruffian, the mermaid appeared again.
She conjured fresh steamed cakes and water for the starving girl, explaining that Chan had freed her by lighting the candle. The mermaid promised that as long as the flame remained lit, she would stay by Chan's side. Chan affectionately named her companion A Nuan. Over the following days, A Nuan provided Chan with fresh fruit and beautiful clothes. As years passed, Chan grew into a young woman, but A Nuan remained eternally youthful.
To support herself, Chan worked as a laundress for Zuichun House and sold handmade scented sachets. One evening, Bi Zhi and Su Beilu arrived at the establishment in their search for the Mermaid Candle. Due to a misunderstanding of accents, the house manager initially introduced them to a top courtesan named Chang'e. Eventually, they learned that the Chan they were looking for was a lowly laundress who had just finished her shift.
While working earlier that day, Chan had been harassed by a drunken official, but a friend had stepped in to help her. On her way home that night, Chan was cornered again by the same official. Just as he attempted to assault her, a noble young man named Jiang Ling intervened and drove the official away. Returning home, Chan found A Nuan waiting with deep concern.
Realizing the world was becoming increasingly dangerous, A Nuan taught Chan how to strike a person's vital spots for self-defense. She warned Chan that in such a heartless era, the soft-hearted would not survive. The following morning, the official who had harassed Chan was found dead by the lakeside. While the townsfolk whispered that he had received his just deserts, Chan noticed strange bite marks on his body that filled her with unease.
Later, she encountered Jiang Ling again in the market. To repay his kindness, she offered him one of her finely crafted sachets. Jiang Ling was impressed by the unique fragrance of the wildflowers from her yard and accepted the gift, noting that such a token should only be given to someone special. He then invited Chan to attend the Liuyun Poetry Gathering he was hosting the following night, telling her that the sachet would serve as her invitation.
