Following the stabbing of Han Bin by Li Xingke, Han Shuang is deeply skeptical of Meng Siyuan’s reputation as an honest official. Seeing how easily Fang Wanzhi pays for the most expensive hospital ward and medications, he is convinced that a vice mayor’s salary could never cover such costs. Meanwhile, Li Xingke’s mother is desperate to help her son.

She attempts to visit Han Bin to beg for a settlement that might lighten the sentence, but she is turned away because of her low social status as a fishmonger. When she seeks help from Meng Siyuan, she finds he is entirely consumed by a critical provincial engineering project and unable to intervene. Fang Wanzhi visits Han Bin herself, but he remains cold and refuses to negotiate, directing her to speak with his brother instead.

Fang Wanzhi reaches out to Han Shuang, claiming she is acting on behalf of Meng Siyuan to secure a dinner meeting. They meet at the very restaurant where she and Han Bin had their first date. During the meal, Han Shuang admits that the relationship was a calculated move, though he claims Han Bin eventually developed real feelings for her.

He demands that Fang Wanzhi clarify the incident at school by framing Li Xingke as a mentally unstable stalker who acted out of jealousy. This, he explains, would allow school leaders to dodge responsibility and ensure Han Bin's postgraduate future remains intact. Furthermore, he pressures her regarding the Jing River Bridge project, asking for her father’s endorsement and promising her a share of the profits.

He ends with a threat, mentioning the box of books Han Bin gave her for her father, claiming those books have the power to ruin Meng Siyuan’s career. At the school’s scheduled assembly for her self-criticism, Fang Wanzhi chooses to tell the full story instead of following Han Shuang’s script. She speaks of her childhood in Yu County with Li Yudan and admits that being called the Princess of Yu County once fueled her vanity.

She then exposes how Han Bin’s pursuit of her was a sham designed to get close to her father, revealing his cruel remarks about her not being special. To the shock of those present, she plays a recording of Han Shuang attempting to trade her father's influence for legal leniency. She also mentions the box of books and her intent to turn it over to the discipline inspection department.

Her bravery wins the support of her peers and Professor Xu, who offers to defend Li Xingke for free, noting that Han Bin’s injuries are legally considered minor. Fang Wanzhi concludes by taking full responsibility and asking for her own expulsion, while begging the school to preserve Li Xingke’s student status so he can finish his education after serving his time. The fallout is immediate.

On a train ride shortly after, Han Shuang confronts Fang Wanzhi and demands the tape, offering to drop his involvement in Li Xingke’s case in exchange. Fang Wanzhi remains undeterred, daring him to kill her right there. When she finally returns home to Yu County, Grandma Yu informs her that Meng Siyuan discovered 500,000 RMB hidden inside the books.

He had initially been happy with the gift, but upon finding the cash, he flew into a rage and took the box to the authorities to confess the situation and surrender the money. Meng Siyuan also confronts Han Shuang at his office, making it clear that as a Party member with principles, he will never let the Han family profit from state funds, even if it means his own ruin.

Fang Wanzhi eventually finds her father at the grave of her foster mother, Fang Jingyu. Meng Siyuan is a broken man, having spent the night reflecting on his perceived failures as both a leader and a father. He believes Fang Wanzhi intentionally brought the money into their home to trap him in the Han family's scheme. He expresses deep disappointment, stating that she has tarnished the reputation of the Fang family, which had served Yu County for generations.

Despite her attempts to explain, he tells her that he has resigned and no longer considers himself her father. He refuses to let her use the title, turning his back on her and leaving her alone at the gravesite. Devastated and feeling she has no place left, Fang Wanzhi decides to leave her old life behind. In 1995, she travels to Shenzhen to start over.

Living in a cheap hostel where residents celebrate even the smallest successes, she begins the grueling process of job hunting. However, her lack of a degree proves to be a significant obstacle. At a job fair, she meets Gao Xiang. Initially, she mistakes him for a recruiter and tries to impress him with her high grades from her three years of teacher training. Gao Xiang informs her that he is actually recruiting students for continuing education programs.

He warns her that she cannot list herself as a college graduate on her resume when she only completed two and a half years, as being caught would lead to her being blacklisted by employers. He suggests she obtain a diploma through his program to act as a foot in the door for future work. Later, while back at the hostel, Fang Wanzhi receives a phone call regarding a potential opportunity.
