Captain Zhou’s mother refused to move to Shenzhen, insisting she would not become a burden to Li Juan. Respecting her decision, Li Juan arranged for the local government to care for her in a nursing home. Before departing, Li Juan took the stipends that Captain Zhou had faithfully sent home over the years and donated the entire sum to the nursing home to ensure his mother was well looked after.
Back at the construction site, Li Juan remained paralyzed by grief. To help her rest, Fang Wanzhi went to the clinic and obtained sleeping pills, which she gave to Li Juan by claiming they were special medicine to treat a broken heart. After a long, deep sleep, Li Juan awoke and threw herself into work, even washing the bedsheets for the other two women.
She explained that she had to remain strong for her family and the family she had gained through Captain Zhou, recalling his belief that human will could overcome any hardship. The quiet of the site was soon interrupted when Hao Qianqian suddenly acquired a pager. She frequently hurried away to "make phone calls" when it buzzed, but she was actually sneaking into Liu Zhu’s room. Their relationship had quietly developed since their trips into town to buy groceries.
When Fang Wanzhi and Li Juan eventually discovered the truth, Hao Qianqian confessed and revealed that she was suffering from morning sickness. Though surprised by the speed of the romance, the friends offered their blessings. Liu Zhu was a reliable man, and his family possessed enough resources to ensure Hao Qianqian would be well cared for after they married. As the Lunar New Year approached, work at the site stopped and the canteen prepared to close.
Mr. Liu returned from the finance department looking defeated, explaining that the new director, Mr. Wang, refused to pay the promised year-end bonuses. Because there was no written contract, Director Wang ignored the previous administration’s verbal agreements. Mr. Liu urged the group to accept the loss for the sake of peace, but Fang Wanzhi and the others refused to let their hard work go unrewarded.
While at a restaurant for breakfast, Fang Wanzhi encountered Gao Xiang, who showed her his press credentials and mentioned he had also studied law. He continued to urge her to enroll in night school, but Fang Wanzhi used the opportunity to ask about the legality of their missing bonuses. Gao Xiang explained the difficulty of pursuing a case without a contract and witnessing the high turnover of site workers, yet he promised to look into the matter.
Fang Wanzhi and Li Juan later confronted Director Wang in his office. He remained stubborn, accusing them of being greedy temporary workers who were already paid more than officials in inland cities. Fang Wanzhi countered that they worked sixteen-hour days and had the highest-rated canteen in the group. Outside, Hao Qianqian staged a dramatic scene, stuffing her clothes to make her belly look larger and brandishing a bottle she claimed was pesticide.
She threatened to take her life and her child’s if they weren't paid. The commotion drew the attention of Mr. Hu, who had been brought back to the station by Gao Xiang. Mr. Hu reprimanded Director Wang for his outdated mindset, stressing that the group’s reputation in the Special Zone depended on credit and the principle of more work for more pay. He ordered Director Wang to sign the contracts and release the bonuses immediately.
The "pesticide" was revealed to be nothing more than a sour drink Hao Qianqian had been craving. With the bonuses finally secured, the group gathered to distribute the money. Mr. Liu felt he didn't deserve a share since he hadn't stood up for them initially, but the girls insisted that as their leader, he should receive a portion.
As the others prepared to catch their trains for the Spring Festival, Fang Wanzhi decided to stay in Shenzhen during the holiday to look for a higher-paying job, even as Gao Xiang tried once more to convince her that a proper degree would be her best path forward.
