Following the discovery of the hidden remains, Manager Qian Dajun was taken into custody, where he confessed to the dark history of Yuanlongli. Years earlier, a resident had died after slipping in a poorly constructed hallway. Lacking the funds for proper repairs, Qian had stolen maintenance materials to build a storage shack in the underground garage.

In July 1997, while Officer Ran Fangxu and a young He Xiaohe were exploring the "underground maze," Qian discovered a severed head and two arms inside an electrician's bag. Fearful that a police investigation would tank property values and prevent his family from selling their units, he chose to suppress the truth. Qian initially hid the bag in a chicken coop, then tried to stuff it into a drainpipe, but found the opening too small.

Eventually, he buried it in the woods behind the complex. For five years, he lived in a state of constant paranoia until the summer of 2002, when his uncle, Ge Jingsong, accidentally fished a skull out of the water. The discovery sent Officer Ran into a frenzy of searching, nearly uncovering the rest of the remains. Panicking, Qian dug up the remaining hand bones and encased them in a cement block in the garage, hoping they would stay hidden forever.

He admitted he grew to loathe the building and desperately wanted it demolished so his guilt and the "monsters" within would finally vanish. Based on Qian’s testimony, He Xiaohe met with Captain Zhao and Captain Qu to request the formal reopening of the "June 30th case."

She presented a powerful piece of evidence: an unsent message found on Ran Fangxu’s old phone from the day he died, which stated that the original investigation was wrong and that Wu Shanlong had been framed. Recognizing that Ran had died with this heavy regret, the station agreed to the request. However, they warned that He Yuanhang needed to find a definitive breakthrough quickly, as they had no legal authority to delay the redevelopment indefinitely.

In the wake of Qian’s arrest, the company appointed Jin Manlang as the new head of demolition. An aggressive social climber, Jin was determined to clear the building to secure a promotion to Vice President. He attempted to bribe He Yuanhang with double, then triple rent to vacate Room 609, but the retired detective stood his ground, citing his legal three-month lease.

Frustrated, Jin turned his attention to the other residents, handing out bags of cash—100,000 yuan per household—as immediate compensation for signing. While most residents were swayed by the money, Jin used psychological warfare on the holdouts, blasting loud symphony music outside the building. When the elderly Mr. Meng retaliated by throwing objects at the demolition team, Jin had him detained by the police.

Qiao Suqing also visited He Yuanhang, offering him an unauthorized 50,000 yuan moving fee out of concern and warning him that the company leadership had reported him to the authorities. Despite the isolation, He Yuanhang remained in the building, telling the "spirit" of his late apprentice that he was using himself as a "golden birdcage" to make the real killer restless and lure them into the view of his surveillance cameras.

He Yuanhang’s persistence led him to a new lead regarding a man named Yao Xincheng. He contacted a former property owner and discovered a suspicious transaction from 2003. Although Yao Xincheng had paid for the unit, he had never bothered to transfer the deed into his name. Crucially, the seller revealed that another police officer—Ran Fangxu—had visited him to ask about this very transaction on the night before New Year's Eve in 2003, only hours before he died.

The tension at Yuanlongli reached a breaking point as Jin Manlang ordered his men to cordon off the "New York Block" and instructed a crew to prepare blast points for demolition, despite He Yuanhang still being inside. Simultaneously, former residents returned in a riotous mood, demanding more money after rumors spread that the "cursed building" required eighteen victims to satisfy its legend and was still two short.

As He Xiaohe arrived at the chaotic scene, He Yuanhang led the police into a specific room. Inside, they found a space covered in macabre, haunting drawings. Waiting amidst the gloom was Qiao Suqing.
