On July 1st, 1997, as China prepares for the historic return of Hong Kong, a bizarre event occurs at Yuanlongli International Garden. A mysterious young woman in blue high heels arrives, carrying a man draped in a black robe on her back. She bumps into a child without a word, leaving witnesses unsettled.

Ma Qiang, the security guard, watches her on the monitor as she carries the man up to the 18th floor—home to the Pattia Club, which had been shut down during a previous crackdown. When Ma Qiang and his colleague Wang go to investigate, the pair seems to have vanished. However, Wang discovers footprints on the dusty floor that lead them to what appears to be a corpse, prompting a call to the police.

Ran Fangxu, a rookie detective and top graduate from the police academy, is assigned to work under the veteran He Yuanhang, who has been temporarily seconded to the criminal investigation team. Their partnership starts poorly; Ran is physically ill upon arrival, which he insists is motion sickness from He's fast driving, though He mocks him for being a "cucumber" who can't handle a crime scene.

While He Yuanhang is dismissive, believing the case is a superstitious prank by local residents, Ran insists on a scientific approach. He re-enacts the suspects' movements, proposing they avoided a "psychological blind spot" by hugging the walls to remain unseen. The tension between the two increases when Officer Qu Dahai arrives. He Yuanhang tries to claim Ran as his apprentice to impress Qu, but Ran bluntly denies the relationship, stating he doesn't know He.

Investigating further, He Yuanhang notices the footprints are size 37 and questions how a woman of that size could carry a man so far. He eventually proves the "supernatural" elements were staged: a black cloak had been hung on a nail to fall on anyone entering, and a door previously thought to be locked was actually open.

They encounter a child who claims to have seen "ghost claws," but the boy eventually admits his injuries came from falling while being chased by He Yuanhang earlier. The story jumps to 2015, where He Yuanhang visits the Nanshan Branch to find Ran Fangxu. Ran is now working in the archives, avoiding field work and his former mentor. He Yuanhang corners him in a bathroom stall, mocking him for hiding like an ostrich.

He insists that Ran help him investigate the disappearance of a young boy named Han Zi'ang at Yuanlongli, a case that has yet to be officially filed. Although Ran is set to return to Beijing in a week, He Yuanhang goads him into helping by bringing up their shared history from eighteen years ago.

As they drive to the "Demon Building," they find the community still plagued by superstition, hearing rumors that a policeman named He was once impaled on the building's walls. Returning to the 1997 timeline, the professional rift remains wide. Ran secretly sends evidence—including four cigarette butts, fingerprints, and a security tape—to the forensic department under He Yuanhang’s name because the technicians don't recognize Ran's own signature. When He Yuanhang finds out, he is incensed.

At the station, Captain Feng refuses to separate them, arguing that He Yuanhang's high clearance rate and Ran's academic background make them a necessary team. Feng orders them to resolve the Yuanlongli mystery to stop the spread of eerie nursery rhymes and rumors about "white and black impermanence" that have terrified the residents. He Yuanhang later challenges Ran to a wager: if Ran can learn the names of the local tricycle drivers, He will follow Ran’s lead.

However, Ran’s formal, academic interrogation style scares the drivers away. He Yuanhang mocks him for being "posh" and out of touch with the common people. Ran argues that the disappearances suggest coercion and could lead to a homicide, citing Murphy’s Law, but He Yuanhang dismisses it as academic nonsense. Furious that Ran used his name for the forensic submissions, He Yuanhang forces Ran out of his personal car, telling him to find his own way back and withdraw the requests. Ran leaves the car in a rage, shouting that He Yuanhang doesn't deserve to be a detective.
