Chen Zhi, following Xu Yiran's advice on how to win over a woman by "catering to her likes," decided to take Tang Hua on a carousel ride. Xu Yiran had used an analogy, suggesting that for someone whose "heart is weary," a carousel ride could evoke a sense of simple beauty, hitting her softest spot. Misinterpreting this literally, Chen Zhi borrowed Xu Yiran's car and tricked Tang Hua into thinking there was an urgent patient.
He drove her to an amusement park, where he revealed his intention to take her on the carousel. Annoyed by his childish approach, Tang Hua promptly walked away. When Chen Zhi later recounted his failed attempt to Xu Yiran, Xu Yiran was exasperated, explaining that his advice was merely an analogy to connect with Tang Hua's inner self, not a literal instruction. He then dismissively suggested that winning a woman's heart was a talent Chen Zhi clearly lacked.
Meanwhile, Wu Wei and his wife, Lu Yan, were driving to a five-star resort when Wu Wei suddenly felt dizzy and crashed into a guardrail. Both were rushed to Tongshan Hospital's Emergency Department. Xiao Yan examined Wu Wei and diagnosed him with diffuse brain hemorrhage, which could not be treated surgically. She arranged for him to be observed in the EICU, hoping he would recover.
Lu Yan mentioned that Wu Wei had been dizzy before the crash, attributing it to their argument, and casually added that she too experienced occasional dizziness, which she attributed to lack of sleep. Xiao Yan recommended a CT scan for Lu Yan, but she refused, insisting she was fine and wanted to stay with her husband. Moments later, Lu Yan fainted. Initial scans showed no abnormalities in Lu Yan's brain. Subsequent tests revealed critically low blood potassium levels (2.
8), which could cause arrhythmia and even cardiac arrest. Lu Yan was shocked, denying any serious health issues, but Lin Zhi sternly informed her that she had suffered unconsciousness and cardiac arrest, only surviving thanks to Xiao Yan's timely CPR. Xiao Yan assured Lu Yan that they were working to find the cause of her hypokalemia and that Wu Wei's brain bleeding had stabilized.
However, Lu Yan's condition worsened, leading to another cardiac arrest, from which Xiao Yan and her team successfully resuscitated her. Unable to find the cause of the low potassium, Xiao Yan and Tang Hua tirelessly searched for clues. Xu Yiran mockingly suggested Bai Shu help Xiao Yan. Bai Shu questioned Lu Yan about her and Wu Wei's professions, discovering Wu Wei was an oil worker in Africa.
Bai Shu initially suspected chemical poisoning, recalling a past case of lead poisoning from contaminated gasoline. However, Xu Yiran later confirmed with petroleum industry experts that the hypokalemia was unrelated to petroleum or lead. Seizing the opportunity, Xu Yiran then teased Bai Shu about accompanying Xiao Yan to investigate the truth, referencing their previous collaboration on a cadmium poisoning case.
Bai Shu quickly interjected, trying to stop Xu Yiran from speaking carelessly, but Xu Yiran concluded that Bai Shu had feelings for Xiao Yan, which Bai Shu desperately tried to hide. Later, when Little Guang expressed his desire to visit the hospital for a school essay about his father, Bai Shu flatly refused. He then called Xiao Yan to meet for lunch, leading Little Guang to playfully accuse him of "choosing beauty over his son."
Following Bai Shu's hunch that the poisoning might be dietary, he and Xiao Yan went to Lu Yan and Wu Wei's home, using a key Lu Yan had provided. They found partially eaten buns, which, upon testing, revealed traces of barium nitrate. This confirmed that barium poisoning was the cause of Lu Yan's hypokalemia, as barium nitrate reacts with stomach acid to form toxic barium chloride, leading to low potassium.
Lu Yan was baffled, stating she and her husband had personally made the buns. Xiao Yan reassured her that barium poisoning was curable, and thanked Bai Shu for his insightful diagnosis. Shortly after, Wu Wei regained consciousness and immediately asked about Lu Yan. Xiao Yan briefly informed him that Lu Yan was fine, but Tang Hua's more explicit mention of Lu Yan's cardiac arrest shocked Wu Wei, causing him to faint again.
Suspecting barium poisoning, Xiao Yan ordered further tests for Wu Wei, which confirmed his blood potassium was even lower than Lu Yan's (2. 6). Meanwhile, Lin Zhi and Tang Hua were caught discussing their suspicion that Lu Yan might have intentionally poisoned Wu Wei due to marital problems and accidentally poisoned herself. Lu Yan overheard their conversation, became enraged, denied poisoning her husband, and threatened to sue them and go to the media.
Lu Ping'an intervened, reprimanding Lin Zhi and Tang Hua for gossiping about a patient's private life. Despite Jiang Shan's attempt to defend them, Lu Ping'an insisted they apologize immediately to Lu Yan, which they did, and Lu Yan eventually accepted their apology, dropping her complaint. Separately, Lu Ping'an noticed Jiang Shan avoiding him and realized that a letter from Jiang Xianyun, given to Jiang Shan at his funeral, might have suggested a romantic match between them.
Lu Ping'an calmly clarified that their relationship was strictly professional, prioritizing their work as director and head nurse. Bai Shu and Xiao Yan then discussed the cause of Wu Wei and Lu Yan's poisoning. Xu Yiran couldn't help but tease them, deliberately creating an opportunity for Bai Shu to get closer to Xiao Yan by bringing them along to a joint consultation for a patient with emphysema.
The patient presented with chest pain and difficulty swallowing, which Xiao Yan deduced was reflux esophagitis, a diagnosis Bai Shu readily agreed with. During this, Xu Yiran quietly encouraged Bai Shu to boldly pursue Xiao Yan, but Bai Shu evaded the topic. Reassured about Wu Wei's improving condition, Lu Yan confessed to Xiao Yan. She revealed her deep fear for Wu Wei's safety while working in the dangerous African oil fields, where he spent most of his time.
She wanted him to resign and find a job in China, but he refused due to the high salary. Remembering her father's past experience with barium poisoning, which caused temporary weakness, she mistakenly believed it was a minor illness. To keep Wu Wei home, she intentionally added a small amount of barium nitrate, used in firecrackers, to her own bun. However, she failed to clean up thoroughly, and Wu Wei accidentally ingested some, leading to his severe poisoning.
Realizing the gravity of her actions, Lu Yan broke down in regret. Bai Shu immediately called the police, and Lu Yan was taken into custody for investigation. When Wu Wei later inquired about Lu Yan, Bai Shu tactfully deflected, merely informing him of her recovery and advising him to rest, subtly prompting him to consider how the barium nitrate ended up in their food. Later, after settling Little Guang, Bai Shu met Xu Yiran for late-night barbecue and drinks.
Xu Yiran teased Bai Shu about his attire and his choice of food, but eventually turned the conversation to Xiao Yan. He openly encouraged Bai Shu to pursue Xiao Yan, speculating that Bai Shu was hesitant out of fear of rejection. Bai Shu, though pleased, feigned indifference, claiming that being admired was normal for an "outstanding man." Xu Yiran, growing frustrated, then revealed with certainty that Xiao Yan "does like" Bai Shu.
Xu Yiran expressed his sincere hope that Bai Shu and Xiao Yan could be together, acknowledging Bai Shu's long years of raising Little Guang alone and emphasizing that it was time for Bai Shu to consider his own happiness. He concluded by affirming his belief that Xiao Yan was a good person.
