Li Peiyi confronts Lv Chongshan over the events of fifteen years ago, refusing to believe his claim that the Prince of Duan went mad and slaughtered his own household. When she demands to know the true identity of the person the Emperor sent to deliver the imperial edict that night, Lv Chongshan uses a bag of black powder to trigger an explosion and escapes.

Despite a pursuit by the Palace Investigation Bureau, Lv manages to elude capture by jumping into a river. Li Peiyi suspects that Lv’s master is now aware of her discovery and wonders who originally arranged for a former Imperial Guard to be transferred to the An Dong Protectorate. Meanwhile, Xiao Huaijin is coerced into luring his father, Xiao Wenyuan, into a trap.

He sends a message via his servant, Qingfeng, asking his father to meet him at a tavern for a drink and to bring a specific sachet. Xiao Wenyuan immediately recognizes the signal; as an official of the Astronomical Bureau, Huaijin should be on duty, not at a tavern. Realizing his son is in danger, Wenyuan alerts Li Peiyi and secretly follows the carriage to the abandoned Prince of Duan’s mansion in the Chongren Ward.

Li Peiyi and Gu Lingzhou arrive at the mansion to find the Xiao father and son tied up before the memorial tablets of the late Prince and his wife. Their captor is Chen Luo, the Commandant of the Jianning Iron Army. Chen Luo, seeking vengeance, accuses Xiao Wenyuan of the massacre. He explains that fifteen years ago, hearing rumors of a plot against the Prince, he and his men snuck into the capital.

That night, he saw a man wearing a unique jade pendant—identical to Wenyuan’s—leading the slaughter. Li Peiyi intervenes, revealing that the Xiaos were actually her saviors who rescued her and brought her to the palace. The group pieces together the truth: the disaster was a meticulously planned frame-up. Li Peiyi deduces that the mansion’s clepsydra (water clock) had been tampered with to run an hour slow, making the Prince unknowingly defy the Emperor’s summons and creating an illusion of rebellion.

Xiao Wenyuan also recalls finding a dying eunuch at the gates whose throat had been slashed by a fingertip blade—the signature weapon used by Lv Chongshan. It becomes clear that the record of this eunuch was erased to bury the truth. Determined to uncover the mastermind, Li Peiyi kneels outside the palace for a day and a night until the Emperor finally grants her an audience.

She boldly asks whether the Emperor’s care for her over the years was born of compassion or guilt. Though offended by her insolence, the Emperor issues a decree: since Li Peiyi is so obsessed with the truth, she is to be confined within the ruined Prince of Duan’s mansion to conduct her investigation. Li Peiyi realizes that by doing so, the Emperor is giving her a chance to draw out the person who manipulated the events of that night.

As Li Peiyi moves back into her childhood home, Xiao Huaijin helps her settle in but knows she is in grave danger. He realizes the mastermind will see her confinement as a perfect opportunity to strike. Xiao Huaijin decides that the only way to truly save her is to earn significant merit.

He entrusts Li Peiyi's safety to Gu Lingzhou and Wu Ren, announcing he will enter seclusion to work on a task the Emperor desires but no one else can complete. He instructs them to seek help from Consort Shu or Zhao Yudi if Li Peiyi falls into immediate peril. Inside the dusty mansion, Li Peiyi is haunted by memories of her family.

She discovers that her father’s former bedroom has been fitted with a suspiciously brand-new lock that is free of dust. Though curious, she remembers Huaijin’s advice and decides to wait before forcing it open. Outside, the guards appear hesitant and evasive when Li Peiyi’s maid, Yuebai, requests charcoal for the cold autumn nights. Li Peiyi realizes that the people watching her are still weighing the situation, waiting for the right moment to decide her fate.
