As Chu Qiao is repeatedly forced into a vat of water by Zhao Chun'er’s guards, the terrifying sensation of drowning triggers a flood of suppressed memories. She recalls a time when she was taught how to survive underwater by holding her breath, and suddenly, her past returns to her in full. With her skills and memories restored, she breaks free from the guards just as Yan Xun arrives on horseback to rescue her.
Their escape is blocked by Zhao Che, the Seventh Prince of Yong, who surrounds them with his troops. Zhao Chun'er desperately urges her brother to kill Chu Qiao, reminding him that the Emperor would surely reward such an act. However, Zhao Che remembers that Yan Xun had once spared his life when their roles were reversed.
Choosing honor over political gain, the Prince orders his men to stand down and allows the pair to ride away, much to Zhao Chun'er's fury. Back at the Yanbei camp, Chu Qiao tends to the numerous wounds on Yan Xun’s back—scars earned while protecting her during their escape from the capital and at the granary. Yan Xun reminisces about the Jiuyou Terrace and the massacre of his clan, reaffirming his vow to protect her.
He remains determined to make her the Queen of Yanbei, yet he secretly uses Shackle Grass—a military drug intended to dull the will—in her medicine to keep her past memories buried and ensure she stays by his side. The proposed marriage faces fierce opposition. Cheng Yuan, Yan Xun’s general, insists that marrying a woman with complicated ties to their enemies will destabilize the tribes.
Sensing Cheng Yuan's secret maneuvers to harm Chu Qiao, Yan Xun warns him by plunging a dagger into his shoulder, yet he spares his life due to their years of service. Undeterred, Cheng Yuan conspires with the female official Helian Ling to involve General Huan of the Xueyu Tribe, portraying Chu Qiao as a "calamity" who has led Yan Xun to neglect state affairs. General Huan, a straightforward warrior, eventually confronts Chu Qiao while she is practicing.
After a brief but intense spar, the two women develop a mutual respect. Recognizing Huan's integrity, Chu Qiao entrusts her with a secret request: should anything happen during the wedding, she asks Huan to fulfill her final wish by taking her body back to the frozen lake, claiming her lost memories lie there. As the wedding day arrives, the atmosphere is tense.
Elder Gelin, the most vocal opponent of the marriage, is found murdered on his way to the city, a move orchestrated to clear the path for the ceremony. Yan Xun is filled with joy, wearing a belt Chu Qiao bought for him at a local shop. He is unaware that the shop was actually a secret stronghold for the Datong Guild and that the belt served as a signal to coordinate a strike.
During the wedding preparations, a sudden assassination attempt by rebels throws the palace into chaos. Yan Xun rushes to find Chu Qiao, only to discover her seemingly lifeless body with blood staining her wedding silks. Heartbroken, he refuses to accept her death and strikes down a physician who tells him to grieve. Amidst the confusion, General Huan honors her promise and carries Chu Qiao’s "body" away to the frozen lake.
Yan Xun pursues them to the desolate, icy expanse, where he finds Chu Qiao lying on the ice. To his shock, she "wakes" from her fake death—a state achieved through silver needles used to seal her acupoints. The warmth is gone from her eyes as she holds a cold dagger to Yan Xun’s neck, declaring her intent to avenge Zhuge Yue and the Xiuli Army.
She reveals that she remembered everything the moment he took a blow for her at the granary, and her apparent devotion was merely a ruse to lure him into this trap. As Datong Guild assassins emerge, Yan Xun confesses that he suspected she was lying all along but chose to gamble his life on the hope that she still loved him.
Despite his pleas to start over, Chu Qiao is consumed by her lack of will to live and attempts to sink into the frozen lake. Refusing to let her go, Yan Xun desperately tries to pull her back from the icy depths, even as his Black Eagle Army moves in to eliminate the remaining rebels.
