On Ma Zong's thirty-sixth birthday, Hou Zhirong met him at the Old Banyan Tree restaurant, a place they shared history with. He ordered Ma Zong's favorite grilled skewers and presented him with a valuable watch as a gift. Ma Zong hesitated, deeming the watch too expensive to accept. Hou Zhirong insisted, stating that no material gift could compare to Ma Zong's contributions to the company over the past thirteen years and seven months.
He recounted a difficult period when Ma Zong, their "lucky general," helped them overcome a major crisis that saved the company. He reminisced about celebrating their victory at that very restaurant with their small team, a place he hadn't visited since. Hou Zhirong admitted that he now felt a deep emptiness despite the company's growth and increasing wealth, often recalling their past struggles.
He confessed that Ma Zong was the only person with whom he could truly confide and speak his heart. Ma Zong listened silently, drinking, his expression complex. Wu Shiyi and Lanqi discussed their past relationships, but for Wu Shiyi, her thoughts always drifted back to Hou Jue. She held onto an idealistic view of love, where it meant constantly thinking about the other person, remembering shared moments, and feeling their joy or pain.
Lanqi, however, desired a more practical approach to love and life. He stated that he didn't dwell on such romantic notions, being too busy with daily affairs. Instead, he defined love by tangible actions: taking his partner to the hospital when ill, providing for her needs, celebrating her birthday, and helping her family. He emphasized that they were no longer students and needed to be pragmatic. Lanqi then asked Wu Shiyi about her ideal partner.
After careful thought, Wu Shiyi replied that her ideal partner should be a simple and honest person, someone she could truly understand, at least when they were with her. Recognizing the late hour, Lanqi suggested they both get some rest. Meanwhile, Doll arrived at Hai Xing's restaurant, offering to mend his torn clothes. She proudly showcased her domestic skills, mentioning she also knitted sweaters for her entire family and could even make sofas and cloth shoes.
Hai Xing, impressed, complimented her. As it grew late, Hai Xing told Doll to head home. Shortly after leaving, Doll rushed back, explaining that all public transport had stopped and she was too scared to go home alone. Understanding her predicament, Hai Xing offered her Wu Shiyi's former room. In Shenzhen, Hou Jue escorted a heavily intoxicated Chen Chen back to her hotel. After getting her settled, Chen Chen clung to him, refusing to let him leave.
Her phone rang, and to Hou Jue's horror, she started babbling to her father, Chen Zong, claiming she was with Hou Jue and her boyfriend. Hou Jue quickly snatched the phone, explaining to Chen Zong that Chen Chen was drunk and he had safely brought her back to the hotel, assuring him he would take good care of her. Although he initially planned to leave, Hou Jue decided it was safer to stay, sleeping on the hotel sofa.
The next morning, Chen Chen woke up, infuriated to find Hou Jue on the sofa instead of the bed, accusing him of disliking her. Hou Jue, annoyed, simply said he was being kind by bringing her back. As he gathered his belongings to leave, Chen Chen threatened not to help him with his proposal, but Hou Jue dismissed her concern and departed. Wu Shiyi's work at the hotel was proceeding smoothly.
With the hotel's grand opening approaching, she was surprised to witness Lanqi, typically mild-mannered, aggressively berating an employee over unsatisfactory work, a stark contrast to his usual composure. Hou Jue, having gone a full day without food, returned to Hai Xing's restaurant ravenously, grabbing a bowl from Doll and devouring its contents. Hai Xing inquired about his trip to Shenzhen.
Hou Jue explained that the business deal fell through as he couldn't even meet the person in charge, who had disappeared. He jokingly asked Hai Xing if the restaurant needed staff, offering to wash dishes or mop floors. Hai Xing declined, emphasizing his expensive crockery and instead offered Hou Jue plenty of food. Shortly after, Hou Jue received a phone call from the night school, informing him that he was officially hired to teach classes.
Hai Xing excitedly congratulated him on finally securing a job. Meanwhile, Ma Zong received a call from an unfamiliar number, causing his expression to change drastically. The caller, a lawyer, informed him that Tian Min had passed away. She had been participating in a charity event, delivering books to children in remote mountainous areas, when she encountered a landslide. Tian Min tragically died while attempting to rescue others.
The lawyer explained that Tian Min's mother, unable to bear staying in China after burying her daughter, had returned to Canada, entrusting Tian Min's diary to Ma Zong because it contained numerous entries about him. Overwhelmed by grief, Ma Zong struggled to accept the news and couldn't bring himself to open the diary immediately. Later, at Tian Min's gravesite, he fell to his knees, sobbing uncontrollably and blaming himself for her death.
When he finally read her diary, Tian Min's entries revealed her deep affection for "Xiaoyong" (Ma Zong) and her longing for their past. She wrote about playing a game with bus passengers to gauge if he had changed and how helping others brought her inner peace, which she considered a form of atonement for him. She also mentioned her upcoming charity trip just before his birthday.
Wu Shiyi, noticing a striking resemblance between a design proposal by a designer named Zhang Sheng for the South Bay Resort Hotel's book bar and Hou Jue's work, immediately went to Hai Xing's restaurant. Hai Xing, initially evasive, eventually revealed the truth to Wu Shiyi: Hou Jue had fabricated his success and his relationship with Chen Chen. When Hou Jue returned, Wu Shiyi confronted him, asking why he had lied.
Hou Jue stammered, admitting he wanted her to pursue a better career and life, believing he would only hold her back. He apologized, stating he was afraid of delaying her progress. Wu Shiyi then showed him the design document. Hou Jue confirmed it was indeed his original design, recognizing specific details only he would know. Wu Shiyi explained that the proposal was submitted by hedgehog workshop, with Zhang Sheng listed as the designer.
She informed Hou Jue that hedgehog workshop was a new company and Zhang Sheng was neither a shareholder nor a legal representative. It seemed Zhang Sheng had taken Hou Jue's design and sold it. Hou Jue, realizing he had been deceived, understood why he couldn't locate Zhang Sheng recently.
