This gives Jiang Jiaqi the idea that they can trace the origin of the bribe cards by pressuring stores to reveal the initial buyer's documentation.
He immediately arranges a meeting with Pang Jian on the roof to discuss this strategy. Observing Jiang Jiaqi leaving his phone behind in the office, Zhou Yu'an sees her opening. She instructs Xiao Zhe to call Jiang’s phone repeatedly, giving her a perfect excuse to chase after him to the roof under the guise of returning the ringing device. This allows her to stay close enough to monitor his conversation through the listening app previously installed on his phone.
On the roof, Jiang Jiaqi proposes using gift cards from the Inspection Office to make purchases and then demanding invoices to force the retailer to provide proof of the original transaction. Pang Jian is impressed but warns Jiang that the corporate climate at Sen'an Pharma is shifting. He reveals that the Phase III trial data for SA-0988 is a "black hole" of unreliable information, and the Chairman is under immense pressure.
Pang Jian believes the Chairman is starting to doubt Gu Chen, which is why Pang was chosen to lead the upcoming report to the drug regulator. He urges Jiang to pick a side to ensure his survival. Following the eavesdropped lead, Gu Chen contacts Su Gengsheng, the director of the Inspection Office, whom he once helped promote.
When Pang Jian later attempts to pressure Su into releasing the gift cards for his investigation, Su refuses to cooperate, strictly maintaining that the cards are criminal evidence. Realizing he has been blocked, Pang Jian suspects that Gu Chen has already interfered. Meanwhile, a few employees discuss their futures outside the high-pressure environment of Sen'an.
An associate named Chi reveals he has secured a stable job as a driver for a government unit, boasting about the steady salary and full benefits. Inspired by the prospect of a low-stress job, Yao Dongshan attends an interview for a similar position. He presents himself as an energetic candidate with nineteen years of driving experience and a completely clean record, hoping to secure a more stable future.
Back at the office, a manager named Gao tries to dump the task of digitizing parking spot records onto Zhou Yu'an. Although Zhou Yu'an is annoyed by the attempt to shirk duties, she realizes this is the perfect chance to obtain Pang Jian's vehicle details. After securing his license plate number, BA6879, she overhears a new development: Pang Jian has a contact who can trace the buyer using just a single card number.
Jiang Jiaqi recalls one card ending in 8906, and Pang Jian plans to meet his contact at Lijing KTV that night to settle the matter before his important morning briefing. Zhou Yu'an and Xiao Zhe coordinate a trap at the KTV. Xiao Zhe disguises himself as a waiter and successfully spikes Pang Jian's beer.
As the night ends and a heavily intoxicated Pang Jian prepares to leave, Xiao Zhe intercepts the real designated driver and cancels the order by pretending to be the owner. Xiao Zhe then takes the wheel himself, driving the unconscious Pang Jian all the way to a hotel in Jiangbei, far from the company. The following morning, a critical R&D progress briefing with Commissioner Du begins at Sen'an Pharma, but Pang Jian is missing and his phone is powered off.
Disappointed by the lack of professionalism, the Commissioner leaves. Pang Jian finally wakes up late in his hotel room, disoriented and panicked. In his desperate rush to return to the office, he collisions with another car in the parking lot and flees the scene. The hit-and-run is immediately reported to the police, leading to Pang Jian's arrest. Gu Chen is thrilled by Pang Jian's disgrace and decides to "clean up" the mess himself to gain the Chairman's favor.
Zhou Yu'an later contacts Gu Chen, demanding that he fulfill his promise of a contract extension and equal benefits. However, their meeting is tense. Gu Chen mocks her, claiming he holds the lives of both her and her elderly ward in his hands. When Zhou Yu'an expresses her desire to end their arrangement, Gu Chen taunts her, asking if she is afraid of the gossip or simply scared of falling for him.
