The series is adapted from the novel of same title by Qi Yingjun and follows modern-day office worker Wang Cuihua, who suddenly finds herself transported into the world of the popular time-travel novel "The Book-Crossing Devilish Concubine." There, she becomes the villainous seductress Yu Wan yin, who is destined to bring down the kingdom. Teaming up with the tyrant Emperor Xiaodan—who is also a fellow time-traveler—they work together to change the novel’s tragic ending and save their kingdom from collapse.

Workplace novice Wang Cuihua unexpectedly finds herself plunged into the plot of a "book-transmigration" novel, where she meets Zhang San, who is also a transmigrator. One is a rookie in the workplace fighting desperately against fate, the other is a domineering monarch who has lain low for a decade, concealing his achievements and fame. Armed with knowledge of the storyline, the two join forces to survive, embarking on a series of schemes. Through testing, they confirm that the female supporting character Xie Yong'er is a transmigrator from an even lower narrative layer than their own. Meanwhile, they prepare drought-resistant crops in advance for an impending famine, recruit talented individuals, stabilize the border regions, win over Xie Yong'er, and ultimately defeat the ambitious Prince Duan.
Just as victory seems within reach, Xiahou Dan (Zhang San) succumbs to a severe, long-accumulated head ailment. It is only then that Yu Wanyin (Wang Cuihua) learns that the mysterious prophet "Nameless" had long foretold that only one of the two could survive. Xiahou Dan, having missed the best chance to ensure his own survival by not killing her when he first could, had chosen differently. Now, Yu Wanyin makes the same choice—she decides that Xiahou Dan must live.
The Qiang Kingdom, weak and desperate to defeat Great Xia, often dispatches assassins skilled in poison. When a mute female assassin attempts to poison Xiahou Dan, her toxin ironically counteracts his ailment, curing his head disease and saving his life. In the end, both Yu Wanyin and Xiahou Dan survive, witnessing the prosperous age they had worked so hard for over the years.
