Gu Yiye made the difficult decision to end his relationship with Jiang Nanzheng, a choice he felt was the simplest yet most resolute of his life. Jiang Nanzheng sensed his withdrawal, confronting him about his recent avoidance and lack of communication, asking if he wished to break up or had developed feelings for someone else. Gu Yiye, sitting silently, remained unresponsive to her desperate inquiries.
He eventually admitted his intent to break up, offering the false explanation that her status as the division commander’s daughter created an insurmountable barrier for him. Jiang Nanzheng tearfully dismissed this as a lie, speculating he was either still traumatized by the war or deemed her inadequate. Despite her pleas and assertions of her deep affection for him, Gu Yiye maintained his decision, leaving Jiang Nanzheng heartbroken and realizing that he was determined to keep his true reasons to himself.
Shortly after, Gao Liang found a distraught Jiang Nanzheng and confronted Gu Yiye, furious that he had made her cry. Their argument quickly escalated into a physical fight on the rainy parade ground. Gao Liang accused Gu Yiye of hurting Jiang Nanzheng and himself. Amidst the punches, Gu Yiye finally revealed the real reason for his decision: Xiu, Platoon Leader Zhang Fei’s widow, had given birth to Zhang Fei's child four months ago.
Gu Yiye felt it was his duty to raise the child and care for Xiu, as Zhang Fei died in his arms. He then tasked Gao Liang with taking care of Jiang Nanzheng, urging him to keep the true reason for the breakup a secret. Gao Liang was aghast, arguing that Gu Yiye's choice would ruin the lives of both women and himself.
He emphasized the vast difference between their current lives, filled with ambition and love, and Xiu's struggle for survival in the countryside. Gu Yiye, however, remained resolute, stating that Zhang Fei’s death on his back was his fate and he had to carry this responsibility. He insisted that while Jiang Nanzheng had choices, Xiu had none, and the child needed him. He also asserted that Jiang Nanzheng needed Gao Liang.
The next morning, Gao Liang tried to call Jiang Nanzheng, but she avoided his calls, instructing the operator to say she was unavailable to any male soldier from the Infantry College. Gao Liang then called Han Chunyu for help. Upon learning the true reason for Gu Yiye and Jiang Nanzheng’s breakup, Han Chunyu expressed admiration for Gu Yiye’s courage, noting that many could speak of such sacrifice but few could act on it.
She questioned why they kept the truth from Jiang Nanzheng, but agreed to comfort her. After confirming that Gao Liang had not received a letter she had written, Han Chunyu, seizing the moment, bravely confessed her feelings for him in person. She recalled how her feelings for him had grown since he rescued her in the new recruit company, feelings she had expressed in a letter she thought he never received.
However, Gao Liang gently but firmly rejected her, explaining that his heart was already set on Jiang Nanzheng and he did not want to give Han Chunyu false hope. Despite her heartbreak, Han Chunyu graciously accepted his decision, even encouraging him to pursue Jiang Nanzheng, recognizing it as a chance for him.
Gao Liang, in a voiceover, apologized to Han Chunyu, explaining that he could not offer her hope and would rather be seen as a "bad guy" than cause her further pain. He then asked her to tell Jiang Nanzheng that he would officially begin pursuing her from the next day. Jiang Nanzheng was still avoiding Gao Liang, but fate intervened when his class arrived at her division for training.
As he tried to help her with her luggage, he playfully reminded her of their "strategic alliance" despite her breakup with Gu Yiye. Han Chunyu also arrived at the division, exchanging pleasantries with Gao Liang and Jiang Nanzheng before leaving. Soon after, Deputy Company Commander Xia Lin approached Han Chunyu, confessing that he had accidentally opened and read a letter she intended for Gao Liang.
He admitted that curiosity and jealousy had led him to read it, but because he believed her to be an "upright person," he decided to return the letter to her personally rather than risk Gao Liang misunderstanding his actions if he delivered it. He also expressed his own interest in developing a relationship beyond comradeship with Han Chunyu, but she informed him that she already liked someone else.
That evening, as Gu Yiye walked toward the Ninth Company, he paused by a stream, recalling his father’s words about the ancient tradition of soldiers caring for their fallen comrades’ families. His father had told him that this act of kindness and responsibility, though difficult, was a soldier's sacred mission, encouraging him to embrace the burden. Gazing at the stream, Gu Yiye silently bid farewell to his first love and walked on.
Unknown to him, Jiang Nanzheng soon visited the same stream, vowing to find answers regarding their breakup. Returning home, Jiang Nanzheng’s father, Zheng Yuan, cooked for her, reminiscing about his own youth. He compared Gu Yiye and Gao Liang, echoing a past observation that exceptional and arrogant individuals, like Gu Yiye, often inflict pain.
Zheng Yuan, recognizing himself in Gu Yiye's intensity, knew that loving such a man would be arduous and did not wish for his daughter to become "worthless fuel" in Gu Yiye’s life. He believed parting was the best choice for her. Jiang Nanzheng challenged her father's analogy, feeling his explanation was self-serving and did not alleviate her pain. Meanwhile, Gu Yiye was troubled by Xiu’s repeated rejections, expressed in three letters.
He sought advice from Gao Liang, bewildered why he, an exemplary student, felt like a failure when it came to Xiu. Gao Liang asked Gu Yiye to read the letters aloud, pointing out the subtle shift in Xiu’s greetings from "Comrade Gu" to "Gu" and then "Brother Yiye," indicating a gradual change in her feelings. He also highlighted how Xiu had begun sharing personal updates and even offered to send him cured meat.
Understanding dawned on Gu Yiye, but he still felt unsure about how to confess his feelings directly. Gao Liang advised him to remember Xiu's challenging daily life and the immense pressure she faced. He explained that their relationship, born of Gu Yiye's sense of responsibility as a savior, needed to evolve into genuine love.
Gao Liang stressed that Gu Yiye must make Xiu feel loved, a love she might not have experienced even with Zhang Fei, to truly win her heart. Gu Yiye vowed to do his best. Later, a small gathering of comrades from the Ninth Company took place. Gao Liang and others raised a toast to the Ninth Company, embracing their shared camaraderie and history.
