Division 234 secured ten advanced study positions, with the Ninth Company receiving two. This meant that Jiang Weixing and Niu Mancang were both recommended for military academy. On the eve of their departure, Qin Hanyong earnestly told them to remember how their company had endured. He reminded them that they were going to school on behalf of all their comrades and fallen brothers, who had lived and died together.

Jiang Weixing reported he would live up to the expectations of the Party and the people, and study hard to become a revolutionary, young, professional, knowledgeable, moral, and talented leader. Niu Mancang excitedly exclaimed that his family would finally have a cadre. Qin Hanyong reiterated that he didn't want to talk about their fallen brothers, as it was painful, but he had to. He told them to remember how the company came to be and what they had endured.

That evening, Jiang Nanzheng and Gu Yiye chatted by a stream. Jiang Nanzheng playfully complained that Gu Yiye, as her boyfriend, seemed less attentive than Gao Liang, who knew all about the admissions. Gu Yiye then confessed that he had actually asked Gao Liang to help her, after extensively researching the admissions policy with his father. Jiang Nanzheng was surprised, realizing Gao Liang's secrecy was just him trying to "show off."

Gu Yiye apologized for not being able to always be there for her, explaining that even though Gao Liang might seem unserious, he was always there to support him, which was reassuring. He admitted Gao Liang had matured significantly after the war, unlike himself, who felt lost. Jiang Nanzheng comforted him, assuring him that the Gu Yiye she loved could achieve great things and would overcome any challenges.

She shared that she had never had many good friends and never envied anyone, but lately, she wondered if being Gao Liang, free from such burdens, would be easier than being Gu Yiye. She quickly clarified that Gao Liang was like family, a dear comrade she had cried for when he returned from the brink of death, vowing never to let him feel lonely again.

Moved by her words, Gu Yiye embraced her, and they leaned against each other, creating a warm and sweet atmosphere. Gu Yiye remarked that her kindness would touch all men's hearts, and he would also try to be a part of Gao Liang's family, if Gao Liang would accept him. Jiang Nanzheng mentioned that Gao Liang saw Gu Yiye as motivation to catch up and surpass, which she found admirable.

Gu Yiye, however, felt a sense of urgency, seeing that Gao Liang's pace was one that most people understood, but not his own. He spoke of the importance of rhythm in battle, and how one person must stand out to find their own rhythm amidst the noise. Jiang Nanzheng acknowledged that being different must be difficult. Gu Yiye felt he hadn't done well, but she reassured him he had.

She understood his distraction with Platoon Leader Zhang Fei's family and his heart being still on the battlefield. Gu Yiye felt he owed her, but she responded that she liked him owing her, even for a lifetime. He couldn't forgive himself, but she urged him to relax, valuing their shared survival from the battlefield and their ability to be together. Meanwhile, Han Chunyu, after much hesitation, plucked up the courage to call Gao Liang, hoping to confess her feelings.

She wished to be brave and prepared herself before calling. When Gao Liang answered, he initially mistook her for Jiang Nanzheng. After she corrected him, he congratulated her on her military academy admission, and she congratulated him on his exceptional admission to the Army Academy. She mentioned their schools were close and suggested they hang out on weekends.

Han Chunyu then tried to express her feelings indirectly, saying that now that they were about to become cadres, many things wouldn't violate discipline. Gao Liang, however, completely missed the hint, suggesting they invite more friends to watch movies together. He then abruptly ended the call, saying he had to rush to a celebration party. Han Chunyu tried to call back, wanting to say more, but then her phone rang again with another incoming call.

The second call was from Xia Lin, who asked if she remembered him from the front-line camp, where she had hugged him instead of answering his question about an unbreakable radio. Han Chunyu recognized him and recalled reading a military newspaper interview about his platoon's heavy sacrifices to deliver intelligence, and how he was the sole survivor. Xia Lin explained that her hug had deeply impacted him and was crucial for his recovery.

Han Chunyu dismissed it as something she would do for any comrade. Xia Lin then revealed he had come to tell her something important: he wanted their relationship to go beyond comradeship. He confessed, "I like you." Han Chunyu was flustered, trying to defer him by citing her academic weaknesses and need to focus on studies. Xia Lin insisted that he understood, but that meeting someone who made his heart flutter was rare, and he didn't want to miss her.

Han Chunyu finally admitted they weren't suitable because she had someone else she liked, leaving Xia Lin stunned as she departed. The next morning, Zhangmu Train Station was bustling with soldiers heading to military academies. Now promoted to cadres, they were free from previous restrictions on relationships. Jiang Weixing openly offered Tong Bing an orange soda, which she accepted with a smile. Gu Yiye and Jiang Nanzheng's relationship was also publicly acknowledged as they shared an embrace.

Qin Hanyong and Zhao Hongying also shared a hug, much to the cheers of other soldiers who encouraged them all to show affection. A messenger then delivered a letter to Gu Yiye from Zhang Yuanshan, the Party Secretary of Zhang Fei's hometown, eastern Guangdong. The letter revealed that Zhang Fei's mother was gravely ill after his sacrifice, and Xiu, though struggling, refused to trouble the military for help. Jiang Nanzheng immediately initiated a collection among their comrades.

After a moment's hesitation, Gu Yiye decided to change his plans and travel to eastern Guangdong to help, knowing it meant delaying his academy registration. Qin Hanyong assured him he would explain the situation to the school authorities. He told Gu Yiye that Xiu was more familiar with him and might accept his help, urging him not to hesitate and to "stand up" in such a moment.

Upon arriving at the hospital, Gu Yiye shouldered the medical expenses and diligently assisted Zhang Fei's family. He narrated to Jiang Nanzheng that he had carried Zhang's critically ill mother for 35 kilometers to the hospital, and though she was saved, Xiu's profound gratitude filled him with "deep guilt." Xiu, wanting to repay the money, politely but firmly told Gu Yiye not to visit again, thanking the military and Zhang Fei's comrades.

Gu Yiye reflected on Zhang Fei's recounting of Cao Yuhai, a Korean War hero whose dying wish was for his fiancée to move on. Zhang Fei himself had regretted consummating his marriage with Xiu before his sacrifice. Gu Yiye realized that Xiu, her sick mother-in-law, and their infant child were Zhang Fei's last remaining link to the world.

He felt that here, "kindness and good intentions" alone couldn't solve the problems, and that "good people must make sacrifices" and "good things must have a price." He concluded, "And I am the price." On the train journey back to the academy, seeing Xiu crying alone in the corridor, Gu Yiye made a painful decision: he would break up with Jiang Nanzheng and stay with Xiu to raise the child and care for Zhang Fei's mother.

He acknowledged this decision's devastating impact on Jiang Nanzheng, his beloved, and admitted he lacked the courage to face her directly. Back at the Army Academy for new cadet registration, the team leader, Li Shaobing, nicknamed "Fried Pancakes Lee," introduced himself as a veteran scout. He warned the new cadets that their "days of suffering" had begun, telling them to discard their past military honors, as they were now history.

He stressed that scouts were the "elite part of the army," and as future platoon and company commanders, they must first temper themselves into "ace" leaders. Xia Lin reported late, and a staff member explained that Xia Lin's situation was special. He had recently won three championships in the military district's scouting professional tournament and was given an exceptional admission by Vice Army Commander Wang of Army A, which caused delays in his paperwork.

Li Shaobing dismissed the explanation, immediately tackling Xia Lin to emphasize that rank and connections meant nothing there; everyone was "new steel" to be forged. He declared that from that day on, they were no longer just from Army A or military district elites, but the "future of the Chinese army," presenting them with a choice: be defeated by him, or defeat him and walk out. Gu Yiye quietly returned to the academy, his demeanor profoundly changed.

Gao Liang, concerned, confronted him. Gu Yiye explained Zhang Fei's mother's ongoing hospitalization for coronary heart disease and other complications. He added that he had given Xiu the money donated by their comrades, but Xiu was still struggling immensely, "hanging on by a thread." Gu Yiye dismissed Gao Liang's "hypocritical" sympathy as useless, angrily stating that it offered no practical help.

He described Xiu, a seemingly delicate woman, shouldering the immense burden of grief, caring for an ailing mother, running the household, and yet constantly worrying about not being a bother to them, the "so-called comrades." He questioned the utility of their comradeship. Gao Liang tried to suggest solutions, but Gu Yiye, still furious, pulled away and told Gao Liang to go after Jiang Nanzheng himself, implying she was tired of waiting for Gu Yiye.

Gao Liang was shocked, calling Gu Yiye crazy. Gu Yiye retorted that it was Gao Liang who was abnormal, constantly fussing over Jiang Nanzheng. He reiterated, "Go ahead and get her." Enraged, Gao Liang threw his noodles over Gu Yiye's head and stormed off, calling him a "jerk" and asking what else he could do besides waste food. This scene was witnessed by Xia Lin and Gu Heng, who had come to teach a special class.

Xia Lin, acting as Gu Yiye's section leader, sternly warned Gao Liang against such behavior, reminding him that a scout's fist shouldn't be thrown so casually, especially in public. Gu Heng then spoke to his son, Gu Yiye, observing that his problems were more severe not due to weakness, but to his heightened sensitivity.

He explained that while 99% of soldiers had their vulnerabilities worn away to become tough, some, like Gu Yiye, were valuable "because" of their sensitivity—they were the "antennae and brains" the army needed. Gu Yiye emotionally responded that his father couldn't understand the feeling of a comrade taking a bullet for him, a warmth and weight he could never forget, and that he couldn't forgive himself. Gu Heng softly replied, "I understand, son."

In the following days, Gu Yiye immersed himself in rigorous academics and training, understanding that the path from soldier to officer was fraught with "thousands of difficulties and obstacles, and narrow escapes." He focused on his decision to distance himself from Jiang Nanzheng and no longer associate with her. Gao Liang also recognized Gu Yiye's internal transformation, describing it like a "mushroom cloud."

Feeling this change, Gao Liang likewise decided to distance himself from Jiang Nanzheng, resolving not to date her anymore. On their next scheduled date, Gu Yiye met Jiang Nanzheng holding roses, offering them to her. She remarked on their beauty and thanked him. She asked if he had sent the remittance for Xiu and if Mother Zhang had been discharged. He assured her everything was arranged.

Jiang Nanzheng noted he wasn't wearing the red dress he promised, and he explained he wasn't in the mood due to Zhang Fei's family, promising "next time." She then suggested skipping the movie, wanting to talk about school and Zhang Fei's affairs.

Gu Yiye, however, insisted on going, stating with a heavy heart, "this may probably be the first time, as well as the last time for us watching movies together," before quickly dismissing it as a joke and urging her into the cinema. Later, the academy organized a basketball friendly match between the Communication Academy and the Army Academy.

Han Chunyu, now a cheerleading captain, called Gao Liang to tell him about the match and a letter she had written to him, which she feared speaking in person about. Gao Liang was surprised about the letter but said he would talk to her after receiving it. Xia Lin, as Gao Liang's First Unit leader, received the mail, including Han Chunyu's letter for Gao Liang. However, an emergency muster was called, preventing him from delivering it immediately.

During the intense basketball game, both Gu Yiye and Gao Liang were part of the winning team, with enthusiastic cheers from the female cadets. After the game, Jiang Nanzheng brought Gu Yiye water, but noticed his preoccupied expression. She asked why he had been ignoring her letters and calls, directly asking, "Gu Yiye, are you trying to break up with me?"
