Lianziguazi returned the 800 silver dollars, along with the daily interest, to Qiu Dafang's man. The man expressed his disappointment at not having the opportunity to exploit Wu Lizi and wondered aloud who her powerful backer was. Lianziguazi sternly warned him against speaking ill of Wu Lizi and told him to inform his boss that she was not to be trifled with. Lianziguazi later reported back to Cheng Yizhi that Wu Lizi's gambling debt had been settled.

Lianziguazi then voiced his concerns to Cheng Yizhi about marrying a woman from "entertainment venues," calling them unreliable and suggesting they investigate Ms. Lizi first. Cheng Yizhi, however, stood firm in his decision, referring to her simply as "Lizi." In his private thoughts, Cheng Yizhi reflected on the revelation that Lizi was Wu Zhifu's daughter, the same Ms. Wu he had heard was "afraid of the spider web and bad at sewing and cooking."

He felt a profound sense of serendipity. He secretly resolved to protect this woman, initially perceiving her as "weak and helpless," and later recognizing her incredible perseverance mirrored his own. He vowed that the ruthless past would not harm her again, understanding that his protection was akin to one of his own kind safeguarding another. Wu Lizi went to the theater to invite Charlie to her wedding.

Charlie was shocked to learn that Cheng Yizhi not only paid off her gambling debt but was also marrying her. Wu Lizi revealed that her fiancé, Cheng Yizhi, was the manager of Longying Private Bank's Jing'an Branch, hinting at his powerful connections. Charlie found it puzzling why Cheng Yizhi would marry her so quickly. Wu Lizi simply implied that Cheng Yizhi was "not an ordinary man." Wu Lizi then visited Professor Lu at Yaen University.

Professor Lu expressed concern for her well-being and urged her to return to her studies, offering to cover her tuition. Wu Lizi politely declined, stating she was getting married soon and wished for him and his wife to be her only guests. Professor Lu, still hoping she would reconsider her future, eventually agreed to attend, promising to learn about her intended husband at the ceremony. The wedding ceremony for Cheng Yizhi and Wu Lizi took place at Huizhong Restaurant.

Among the guests were Huang Ruhong and his wife, Professor Lu and his wife, and Cheng Yizhi's friends, including Xiaolíngdang. Liao Lan observed the bride and felt she looked familiar but couldn't place her. Cheng Yizhi thanked his guests, acknowledging the hurried nature of the wedding. He then introduced Professor Lu as his respected teacher and officiant, emphasizing his prominent position as an economics professor at Yaen University and a preparatory consultant for the Shanghai Banking and Monetary Association.

During the ceremony, Professor Lu praised both Cheng Yizhi and Wu Lizi. He then caused a stir among the guests by revealing Wu Lizi as the daughter of Wu Zhifu, the former general manager of Shanghai Deposit Bank and his close friend.

He spoke of Wu Zhifu's sudden and tragic death, which was a great sorrow to the banking community, and expressed his hope that Wu Lizi's marriage to a promising young man would bring comfort to her father's spirit in heaven. Professor Lu concluded by wishing the couple, "May you support each other and grow old together." Tearfully, Wu Lizi addressed the guests, apologizing if her identity offended anyone.

She recounted her privileged life as a student at Yaen University, which was abruptly shattered by her father's death. She described her subsequent descent into "hell," unable to continue her studies or find employment, her mother falling ill, and former classmates ridiculing her. Her mother eventually passed away from "heartache," following her father. Wu Lizi confessed that she had contemplated suicide, feeling her life was "meaningless" and that she was "not qualified to be a human being."

She then credited Cheng Yizhi for appearing in her darkest hour, willing to "take care of me, protect me," and marry her despite her impoverished state. She told Cheng Yizhi that while he had other choices, she "only had him." She concluded by publicly declaring herself no longer "Wu Zhifu's daughter" but "Cheng Yizhi's wife," promising to be a good wife and repay him for the rest of her life.

A deeply moved Cheng Yizhi then placed the wedding ring on her finger. During the reception, Cheng Yizhi and Wu Lizi toasted Professor Lu. Professor Lu gently urged Wu Lizi to clear her father's name, asking if she truly believed her father could have done wrong. Wu Lizi, however, insisted that as a married woman, she simply wished to live her own life. Huang Ruhong highly praised her desire to live a stable life.

Cheng Yizhi then introduced Wu Lizi to Huang Ruhong and his wife. Huang Ruhong mentioned he recalled meeting Wu Lizi at a Banking and Monetary Session banquet where she played piano. He then confirmed he had also met her father, Wu Zhifu, to discuss the Banking and Monetary Association, praising Wu Zhifu as an "eloquent and charming" leader in the banking industry. As Huang Ruhong asked, "Is Zhifu here?"

, Wu Lizi was visibly shaken, realizing that Huang Ruhong's voice matched the last phone call her father had received. Later, Liao Lan expressed her disapproval of Wu Lizi to Huang Ruhong, criticizing her for getting drunk at her own wedding and questioning her motives for marrying Cheng Yizhi so quickly.

Huang Ruhong defended Wu Lizi, pointing out that it was challenging for a fallen rich girl to become a waitress and that her desire for respect from her in-laws and her sincere public speech were understandable. He advised Liao Lan to mind her own business on their wedding night.

That night, Wu Lizi, having drowned her sorrows in alcohol and become unconscious, was carried back to the bridal chamber by Cheng Yizhi, who felt distressed and secretly vowed to treat her well and never let her suffer again. Later, Cheng Yizhi watched Wu Lizi sitting alone in the courtyard, deep in thought under the starry sky. He realized his earlier perception of her as "weak and helpless" was mistaken.

Instead, he recognized a woman of "incredible perseverance" who had survived a disaster, much like himself. He reaffirmed his commitment to protect her, not as a strong man protecting the weak, but as a man protecting his own kind. He then quietly returned to bed, pretending to be asleep when Wu Lizi eventually came back to the room. The next morning, Wu Lizi apologized to Cheng Yizhi for her behavior at the wedding.

He reassured her that no one was upset, mentioning Huang Ruhong's positive impression of her, and promised no one would hurt her again. Feeling protected, Wu Lizi subtly began questioning Cheng Yizhi about Huang Ruhong, asking if he was highly regarded by his boss and how long he had been with him. Cheng Yizhi explained he had not been with Huang Ruhong long, having been a dried goods vendor when they first met at Yaen University.

Wu Lizi pressed on, implying he must have done "something incredible" with Huang Ruhong. Cheng Yizhi denied it, expressing a wish to do so in the future. Wu Lizi quickly shifted, expressing "surprise" and admiration for marrying such a "capable man." Cheng Yizhi arrived at Longying Private Bank, where his colleagues congratulated and playfully teased him about his marriage. He then asked Lianziguazi to find a reliable photographic studio.

Wu Lizi went to Charlie, excitedly revealing that Huang Ruhong's voice matched the last phone call her father had received. She firmly believed Huang Ruhong was involved in her father's death. Charlie was skeptical, arguing there was no known connection between Huang Ruhong and Wu Zhifu and no clear motive for Huang to harm her father. Wu Lizi relied on her "instinct," stating this time it was different.

She informed Charlie that Cheng Yizhi might be her "only breakthrough" to investigate Huang Ruhong. Cheng Yizhi visited the Starlight Theater for a "secret investigation," assessing its operations before Longying Private Bank approved a loan. Wu Lizi secretly followed him there. When Cheng Yizhi spotted her, she pretended to be there to watch a movie. He offered to join her and even bought her favorite snacks.

As they watched the movie, Wu Lizi was reminded of the last time her father took her to the cinema, and tears welled up in her eyes. After the movie, Cheng Yizhi observed the high sales of snacks from nearby vendors, confirming good customer traffic for the theater. He decided to approve the loan. Meanwhile, Liao Lan happened to pass by and took Wu Lizi shopping. Cheng Yizhi later developed the film roll Wu Zhifu had entrusted to him. It revealed a series of incomprehensible accounting records. Recognizing the sensitive nature of the information, Cheng Yizhi decided to keep this discovery a secret.
