Incited by Leizi, the local store owners confronted Huang Ruhong, demanding that Cheng Yizhi return the Rue Amiral Bayle land to Huang Ruhong. They also disparaged the common people as "poor folks." Cheng Yizhi, enraged, retorted sharply, reminding them that many successful individuals, including themselves, started as "poor folks" and that the land at No. 136 Rue Amiral Bayle would provide opportunities for others to rise.

Leizi, however, interjected with cynical remarks, suggesting that the "poor folks" would be unable to afford the rent for the planned high-rise building, causing the land to depreciate and Jing'an Branch to incur losses. Huang Ruhong then appeared, acknowledging the shopkeepers' grievances. He revealed that he had already met with other store owners on Rue Amiral Bayle, including Mr. Shen of Gaodeng Restaurant and Mr. Miao of Long's Trading Cooperation, and they had agreed to the Wande Garden project.

He publicly pledged to compensate them for any land value depreciation after Wande Garden's completion, but if the value increased, the profits would be shared as a collective achievement. He then sternly rebuked Leizi, who had previously spread rumors that Cheng Yizhi "donated" the land, reminding him that true leaders do not falter under threats. Leizi, realizing his mistake, affirmed his loyalty and the other bosses dispersed.

Cheng Yizhi apologized to Huang Ruhong for the trouble but assured him that investing in Wande Garden would greatly benefit Longying Private Bank. Huang Ruhong then inquired about the unique design of Wande Garden and its designer. Cheng Yizhi explained that Xu Shu, a young architect who graduated from the University of Naples Federico II, possessed a rare combination of modern elegance and traditional Chinese and Western essence in his designs.

Despite Xu Shu's limited experience, having only designed the Jingying No. 2 Middle School building, Cheng Yizhi expressed profound trust in his naive and unyielding personality, believing that such individuals are capable of creating unprecedented miracles beyond the reach of the experienced and sophisticated. Huang Ruhong, though unfamiliar with Xu Shu, entrusted Cheng Yizhi to proceed. Later, while playing tennis, Xu Shu shared his personal struggles, feeling like an outsider despite his education abroad and return to Shanghai.

He then revealed he was deeply in love with a woman he had recently met, who understood architecture, his inner thoughts, and music. He believed their connection was instant and mutual, and planned to propose to her the next day at a French restaurant. Cheng Yizhi, recognizing the description of Wu Lizi, wished him good luck with a heavy heart.

Back home, Cheng Yizhi wanted to prepare a birthday dinner for Wu Lizi, having remembered her birth date from their marriage registration. However, Wu Lizi declined, claiming she needed to help Liao Lan fetch Commander Liao's medicine in Hongqiao, as Commander Liao was seriously ill. Cheng Yizhi, hurt and angry, feigned sleep. The following day, Wu Lizi met Xu Shu at the French restaurant.

Xu Shu enthusiastically detailed the Wande Garden project, crediting Cheng Yizhi for inspiring him to consider the needs of common people and rethink architecture's purpose beyond aesthetics, towards contributing to society. He even compared Cheng Yizhi to Wu Zhifu, the former manager of Shanghai Deposit Bank, whom he had admired greatly and who had called him to apologize just before his untimely death. Wu Lizi feigned ignorance of Cheng Yizhi.

As Xu Shu proposed to her, Wu Lizi was taken aback. She gently refused, offering only her friendship. She then confessed that she was not a reporter from Harold Daily and that her real name was Wu Lizi. She explained that she had approached him to investigate the truth behind her father Wu Zhifu's death, which she suspected was not a suicide. Having witnessed their encounter, Cheng Yizhi, heartbroken, went to a lawyer, Mr. Baker, to arrange a divorce.

He stated his intention unequivocally, explaining that there was no bride price, proposing to give Wu Lizi the house (as she was unsettled), keep the car for his work, and split the remaining assets. He confirmed his decision was final due to "broken affection." Meanwhile, Wu Lizi returned home to find a large birthday cake from Cheng Yizhi but no sign of him.

After calling the bank and learning he hadn't returned, she realized Cheng Yizhi must have discovered her interactions with Xu Shu. A wave of guilt washed over her, acknowledging his unwavering support despite her deception. Cheng Yizhi, after spending the night in his car, appeared tired but composed as he met Xu Shu to sign the Wande Garden construction contract. Xu Shu, still reeling from the rejection, confided in Cheng Yizhi about the woman's marriage, wondering who her husband was.

He signed the contract, affirming his trust in Cheng Yizhi and once again comparing him to Wu Zhifu, the last person he had trusted wholeheartedly and who had helped him upon his return from Italy. Hearing about Wu Zhifu, Cheng Yizhi finally understood Wu Lizi's true motive for approaching Xu Shu—it was to investigate her father's death, not out of romantic interest.

Overwhelmed by this realization and shame for his misunderstanding, he immediately tore up the divorce papers and rushed home, hoping Wu Lizi was still there. He arrived to find Wu Lizi and the household staff, including Wang Ma and Agui, waiting with the birthday cake. Cheng Yizhi fabricated a story about an urgent matter at the bank keeping him out all night. Wu Lizi, though aware of his lie, accepted it as his way of forgiving her.

They shared the cake, and in a lighthearted moment, playfully smeared icing on each other's faces. Later, Cheng Yizhi and Wu Lizi visited Professor Lu and Mrs. Lu. Mrs. Lu lovingly prepared Wu Lizi's favorite dishes, including braised noodles with yellow croaker, and presented her with an original manuscript of Chopin, knowing her love for piano.

Mrs. Lu expressed concern that Wu Lizi no longer played the piano and encouraged Cheng Yizhi to buy a piano for her, which he readily agreed to do. While Wu Lizi learned to make osmanthus candy with Mrs. Lu, Professor Lu invited Cheng Yizhi to his study for a private conversation.

Professor Lu, who had watched Wu Lizi grow up, shared his worries about her emotional state since her father's death, noting her transformation from an ambitious girl to someone who wished to forget her past. He implored Cheng Yizhi, as her husband, to help her open her heart and rediscover her former self, handing him a notebook to better understand her past.

Professor Lu then cautioned Cheng Yizhi against supporting Huang Ruhong's bid for the board, expressing doubt about Huang Ruhong's commitment to industrial growth and the economy, and predicting Wande Garden's eventual failure.
