Sinopsis
In the late 1970s, in a small alley within the residential area of Suzhou Cotton Mill, lived two families: the Zhuangs and the Lins. At this time, the national college entrance examination had just been reinstated. Zhuang Chaoying (played by Guo Xiaodong), a teacher, and his wife Huang Ling (played by Yan Ni) prioritized their children's college entrance exams as the family's top priority. Influenced by them, their neighbors Lin Wufeng (played by Li Guangjie) and Song Ying (played by Jiang Xin) also began focusing on their son's studies.
The Zhuang family—Zhuang Chaoying and Huang Ling—appeared harmonious and respectable. Their son Zhuang Tu'nan (played by Fan Chengcheng) was diligent and studious, while their daughter Zhuang Xiaoting (played by Guan Xiaotong) was obedient and sensible. However, Zhuang Chaoying's weak-willed and blind filial piety caused pain to his family.
Next door, the Lin family—Lin Wufeng and Song Ying—seemed to live by their own rules, with their mischievous son Lin Dongzhe (played by Wang Anyu). Yet, the couple supported each other, and there was mutual respect between parents and child, making their home lively and fulfilling. Following the changes of the times, Lin Wufeng and Song Ying moved their family to Guangzhou in search of new opportunities.
Zhuang Xiaoting and Lin Dongzhe, childhood sweethearts, realized their feelings for each other after being separated. They made a pact to attend the same university and, upon graduation, faced obstacles from family and reality but remained steadfast in choosing each other. Meanwhile, after years of twists and turns, Zhuang Tu'nan ended up with Li Jia (played by Lu Yuxiao), a university classmate with whom he had shared a long-standing ambiguous relationship.
