Yan Xiaodan is devastated when her parents forbid her from traveling to Beijing for a hosting competition following a poor mock exam result. Zhang Xiaoman finds her watering a neighbor's field and, determined to help her, offers his entire savings of over 300 yuan. He explains that the money came from his factory subsidies and extra work, intended specifically to invest in her dream.
Touched by his selflessness, Xiaodan promises to stay by his side regardless of what the future holds. Xiaoman soon contacts Zhuang Sen, who is currently working on a film set in Beijing. Using a borrowed "brick" phone, Zhuang Sen remembers the competition and promises to find a professional to coach Xiaodan, while also urging Xiaoman to buy a pager so they can stay in touch. The next day, Xiaoman and Xia Lei visit a second-hand market.
Despite the high price of 600 yuan, Xiaoman chooses a pager with a Chinese display after the vendor convinces him it will make him look sophisticated. However, the purchase is nearly derailed when the vendor discovers that one of Xiaoman’s 50-yuan bills is counterfeit. Xiaoman immediately returns to the LPG filling station to confront Boss Zhao and his wife, as he had recently received his wages there. The couple stubbornly denies the claim, with the wife questioning Xiaoman’s basic trust.
Realizing they have no intention of replacing the bill, Xiaoman is forced to accept the loss, later taping the counterfeit note to a box as a reminder to stay on guard. Meanwhile, Xia Lei’s mother, Tong Guizhen, begins selling Ginseng Royal Jelly to save for her son's tuition. Xiaoman helps promote the product while making gas deliveries and brings some to Ding Guoqiang’s house as a gift.
While there, he notices the flame on their stove is weak and attempts to empty the residual liquid from the gas tank in the yard. Ding Guoqiang arrives home just in time to stop him, warning that the explosive gas could have leveled the building. This incident makes Xiaoman suspicious of the filling station. He notices that the canisters are lighter than they should be and the filling process is suspiciously fast.
Though Feng Xiaobo tries to distract him, the Boss’s wife slips Xiaoman an extra 100 yuan to keep him quiet, confirming his suspicions of fraud. Xiaoman shares his discovery with Ding Guoqiang, who advises him to turn a blind eye, noting that such corruption is common. However, after seeing a news report about a tragic gas explosion, Xiaoman can no longer ignore the safety hazards.
He sneaks into the station and catches Boss Zhao, his wife, and Feng Xiaobo tampering with the gas tanks. Xiaoman reports the station to the Security Department, leading to it being shut down and earning him the permanent enmity of Feng Xiaobo. Since Xia Lei is under strict supervision following a previous attempt to run away, Xiaoman and Xiaodan set off for Beijing alone on the night train.
During the journey, Xiaoman awkwardly tries to care for Xiaodan by mimicking the attentive behavior of a romantic couple nearby, offering her snacks and wiping her mouth, which she finds both sweet and amusing. Upon arrival, Zhuang Sen introduces them to a security guard named Liu, who has self-studied broadcasting for five years. Although Liu provides some tips, he warns Xiaoman that their last-minute preparation is mostly for peace of mind.
He also scolds Xiaoman for the irresponsibility of taking an underage girl so far from home with only a note left for her parents. Xiaodan eventually loses the competition, failing to realize her dream. Despite the disappointment, Xiaoman comforts her as they head back, promising that once the college entrance exams are over, they will return to Beijing as adults to properly visit the Great Wall and the Forbidden City.
Upon returning home, Xiaoman finds Ding Guoqiang bedridden with severe diarrhea. It turns out that he and many other neighbors have fallen ill after drinking the royal jelly Tong Guizhen sold them. An angry neighbor, Third Aunt, arrives to demand a refund and compensation. To settle the matter, Xia Limin is forced to use his private stash of savings to pay back the neighbors.
Although Tong Guizhen is devastated that her attempt to save for Xia Lei’s tuition resulted in a financial loss, Xia Limin patiently consoles her, reminding her that they can always start over.
