Zhan Zhao and his servant, Ming Zhu Er, traveled by boat toward Songjiang Prefecture, intending to visit the Ding family before heading to Xiankong Island to find Bai Yu Tang. During the journey, the boatman warned them that the island was under a strict lockdown and spoke poorly of Bai Yu Tang's temperament. Meanwhile, Ming Zhu Er mentioned rumors of Zhan Zhao being the Ding family's son-in-law.
Zhan Zhao dismissed this gossip, explaining that his mastery of the Heavenward Crane Strike was a gift from the late Elder Ding to the Zhan family out of gratitude, not a marital arrangement. Upon arriving in Songjiang, they encountered Ding Zhao Hui. After learning that Bai Yu Tang had stolen the official seal to provoke a duel, Zhao Hui defended his friend’s character.
He debunked the rumors of Bai Yu Tang's cruelty, explaining that the "Jinmao Rat" had actually saved a young woman from a notorious criminal named Hua Chong. However, the girl's family had remained silent to protect her reputation, allowing the truth to be distorted into a story of Bai Yu Tang's violence. Zhan Zhao later visited the Ding estate, where he was greeted by a man appearing to be the eldest twin, Ding Zhao Lan. "
Zhao Lan" claimed their sister, Yue Hua, was too ill for visitors and invited Zhan Zhao to stay. Zhan Zhao noticed contradictions in the man’s story regarding Yue Hua’s health. That night, after Ming Zhu Er spotted a servant carrying funeral supplies, Zhan Zhao investigated a cellar and discovered the body of Yue Hua’s maid, Xiao Yun, in an ice coffin. Although the wound on her wrist suggested suicide, Zhan Zhao suspected she had been murdered.
Zhan Zhao confronted the man, correctly identifying him as Zhao Hui in disguise. Zhao Hui confessed that the real Zhao Lan had been in a coma for a year. He revealed that their father had been murdered by someone wielding the Zhanlu Sword, and his body was returned by Jing Yi Ming, the leader of the Shangqing Sect. Shortly after the funeral, Xiao Yun accused Jing Yi Ming of violating her but later recanted and died under suspicious circumstances.
When Yue Hua attempted to seek revenge, she was accused of injuring Zhao Lan during a confrontation and subsequently fled the estate. Examining the facts, Zhan Zhao concluded that Xiao Yun was indeed murdered and that Zhao Lan’s coma was the result of his meridians being shattered by someone who knew how to break the Heavenward Crane Strike.
Zhan Zhao suspected Jing Yi Ming was the true culprit, noting that the outlaw Zhi Hua had recently been seen using the Shangqing Sect’s exclusive Great Compassion Palm. Zhao Hui admitted he had been impersonating his brother to maintain the family's strength and hide their vulnerability from those who coveted the Zhanlu Sword. The following morning, Zhan Zhao and Zhao Hui traveled to Xiankong Island, only to find the area in a state of carnage.
They were met by Lu Fang and Han Zhang, who appeared terrified and urged them to leave immediately. Suddenly, Bai Yu Tang appeared and rang a mysterious bell, which caused Lu Fang and Han Zhang to lose their senses. Their faces overcome by dark markings, the two men mindlessly attacked Zhan Zhao and Zhao Hui. During the struggle, Zhan Zhao and Zhao Hui fell into a hidden pit, realizing too late that they had landed directly on a lethal fire mine.
