> Resumos de Ordinary Greatness
Cheng Hao visited the Wenge Garden community to investigate Ms. Wu's situation. He reported to Wang Shouyi that Ms. Wu was leading a difficult life: her husband had an affair, they were nearing divorce, and he had left home long ago. Consequently, Ms. Wu poured all her energy into their daughter, Jingjing, becoming distraught if she couldn't see her. She also had a history of conflicts with neighbors.
Cheng Hao observed that Ms. Wu was a pitiful figure, and Wang Shouyi decided to leverage this to persuade Xia Jie to apologize, believing her soft heart would be moved. Cheng Hao agreed to try. During lunch, Li Dawei noticed his colleagues discussing Xia Jie's dispute with Ms. Wu. He pulled Zhao Jiwei and Yang Shu aside, cautioning them not to mention it to Xia Jie to avoid adding pressure.
However, when Xia Jie arrived, Yang Shu immediately brought up the apology, stating that Xia Jie should decide for herself whether to apologize, and offering to negotiate with the station if she chose not to. Xia Jie politely declined, thanking him but maintaining her principles. Li Dawei was exasperated by Yang Shu's unhelpful intervention. Wang Shouyi summoned Xia Jie, who correctly anticipated it was about Ms. Wu.
She firmly stated her sympathy for Ms. Wu but flatly refused to apologize, leaving Wang Shouyi helpless. Shortly after, Ms. Wu, having learned of Cheng Hao's community visit, returned to the Balihe Police Station, causing a scene. She accused the police of infringing on her rights, secretly collecting negative information about her, and ruining her reputation, making it impossible for her to live in the community. She demanded an explanation.
Cheng Hao reported this renewed disturbance to Wang Shouyi, who had no choice but to face Ms. Wu. Wang Shouyi, attempting a conciliatory approach, tried to move Ms. Wu to a conference room, explaining that their visit to the community was merely to understand the situation, not to defame her. Ms. Wu, however, was unconvinced. She insisted that their investigation in her community without her consent was inappropriate and had worsened her standing after her divorce.
Wang Shouyi apologized for any perceived offense from their information-gathering but denied spreading rumors. Unappeased, Ms. Wu demanded that Wang Shouyi and Xia Jie publicly apologize to her in front of all community residents to "eliminate the ill effects." Wang Shouyi deemed this an unreasonable demand and refused. Enraged, Ms. Wu slammed the door and stormed out. Cheng Hao volunteered to handle the situation, but Wang Shouyi instructed him to continue working on persuading Xia Jie.
Ms. Wu's incessant calls to the 12345 mayor's hotline escalated the issue to the municipal and provincial authorities. Director Song called Wang Shouyi, expressing his displeasure and setting a strict deadline: the issue must be resolved by tomorrow. Under immense pressure, Wang Shouyi personally visited Wenge Garden with the property manager to negotiate with Ms. Wu.
He initially suggested an expansive public apology, but Ms. Wu, fearing further damage to her reputation, revised her demand: she insisted that Wang Shouyi and Xia Jie come to her home to apologize. Meanwhile, Zhao Jiwei informed Xia Jie that due to her refusal, the station planned to send another female officer, Dou, to impersonate her during the apology. Wang Shouyi even gave detailed instructions to Officer Dou on how to cry and apologize convincingly.
Upon hearing this, Xia Jie, unexpectedly, agreed to go herself. Wang Shouyi then gave Xia Jie and the team detailed instructions, emphasizing to maintain composure, agree to Ms. Wu's every word, and stay for at least 45 minutes to demonstrate sincerity. Wang Shouyi, Cheng Hao, and Ye Wei accompanied Xia Jie to Wenge Garden. Xia Jie was instructed to hold flowers as a gesture of apology.
Upon arriving at Ms. Wu's home, Wang Shouyi formally apologized on behalf of the Balihe Police Station for any shortcomings in their work and for the distress caused by Xia Jie's initial handling of the situation. To their surprise, Ms. Wu was profoundly moved and burst into tears. After drying her eyes, Ms. Wu poured out her heart, explaining her struggles. She worked tirelessly as a doctor, often on three shifts, only for her husband to have an affair.
He then blamed her for being too busy and neglecting the family. She felt she had nothing left but Jingjing and confessed her extreme fear whenever she couldn't reach her daughter, imagining the worst-case scenarios and declaring that Jingjing was her sole reason for living. Listening to Ms. Wu's painful confession, Xia Jie was deeply affected, recalling her own mother's suffocating care and concern for her. Feeling overwhelmed, Xia Jie abruptly left the apartment.
Wang Shouyi then explained Xia Jie's reaction to Ms. Wu, clarifying that Xia Jie was deeply moved, not disrespectful. He revealed that Xia Jie's father was a police officer who had died in the line of duty ten years prior, and like Ms. Wu, Xia Jie's mother had become overly protective. Wang Shouyi apologized once more on Xia Jie's behalf, asking for understanding. Meanwhile, Xia Jie, standing outside, called her mother on her phone, urging her to come home.
Her mother informed her that she was with Xia Jie's aunt, who was planning to accompany her home, and had already bought tickets. Xia Jie's efforts to dissuade her or offer to pick her up were gently dismissed by her mother. Jingjing, Ms. Wu's daughter, returned from school but lingered downstairs, hesitant to go home. Xia Jie approached her, gently encouraging her to go inside, as her mother would be worried.
Jingjing admitted that while her father had done wrong and hurt her mother, she still enjoyed being with him but felt guilty towards her mother. Xia Jie offered comfort, encouraged Jingjing to understand her mother's difficulties, and added her as a WeChat friend, telling her to reach out anytime she needed help or someone to talk to. Wang Shouyi, Cheng Hao, and Ye Wei emerged after successfully comforting Ms. Wu.
Xia Jie joined them, and they returned to the police station. On the way back, Cheng Hao apologized to Xia Jie for his previous attitude. Xia Jie, however, apologized for her own previous attitude and asked him to treat her as an ordinary apprentice, without special considerations due to her father's legacy, emphasizing that she wanted to move past that. Back at the station, Wang Shouyi and the team arrived during lunchtime.
Wang Shouyi addressed everyone, reflecting on Ms. Wu's case. He acknowledged that while police once held unquestioned authority, in the current information age, citizens are more aware of their rights and often record police actions. He framed this as a positive challenge, urging officers to improve their law enforcement standards and philosophy, uphold the dignity of the law, and maintain police authority. Cao Jianjun led the team in applause.
Later, Xia Jie went to the station to pick up her mother. Her aunt was also there, attending her 40th-anniversary class reunion, and her classmates had arrived to greet her. Xia Jie's mother watched them with a touch of envy. At home, Xia Jie had prepared dinner. Her mother, still concerned, reiterated her desire for Xia Jie to switch to a less demanding office job, fearing she would suffer more grievances.
Xia Jie realized her mother had contacted the station leadership again and urged her to stop interfering with her work, expressing her desire to forge her own path, independent of her father's heroic legacy. Her mother was deeply hurt, recalling how Xia Jie's father, in his dying moments, had called out Xia Jie's name. She couldn't believe Xia Jie now saw her father as a "trouble."
Xia Jie tried to explain, but her mother was inconsolable, further threatening to leave home if Xia Jie continued to push her away. Li Dawei waited late into the evening for Xia Jie, but she didn't return. Yang Shu finally told him that Xia Jie was spending the night with her mother, which annoyed Li Dawei for not being informed sooner. Meanwhile, Xu Cuiping, Li Dawei's mother, sent him a message on his phone, asking him to come home for dumplings. Li Dawei was left with a complex mix of emotions.
