Sun Ruoshui finally reveals the truth about her past. Years ago, shortly after Nie Zhe became the Chief, she witnessed him meeting a mysterious man in black. To help Nie Zhe secure his position against those who refused to submit, the man in black provided a list of targets to be eliminated.

He was also the source of the Suzi Fragrance and Qianxun Wood used to poison Mu Qingyan’s father and orchestrated the death of the former Chief of the Qingque Sect, Yin Dai, by leaking his location. Despite her confession and pleas for mercy, Mu Qingyan remains cold, sentencing her to spend the rest of her life in solitary confinement within the dungeon.

Suspecting the man in black will attempt to rescue Nie Zhe, Cai Zhao suggests they wait to catch him. Meanwhile, You Guanyue discovers that the Jade Sunflower has been stolen from the treasury. Yan Xu explains that while Nie Hengcheng once attacked his disciple Lu Chengnan in a murderous frenzy over the missing artifact, it is unlikely that Lu Chengnan, as the intended successor, would have stolen it.

Because the primary healing item is missing, Mu Qingyan gives Song Yuzhi a Wanzai Stone from the Western Regions. While it cannot fully cure the cold poison in Song Yuzhi’s body, its warming properties are exceptional. Song Yuzhi accepts the gift but remains focused on taking Cai Zhao away, warning that the deep blood feuds between the Li Sect and the northern sects cannot be easily resolved.

As the villagers return home, Mu Qingyan takes Cai Zhao on a giant eagle to view the vast Hanhai Mountains. He speaks of his father’s tragic sense of duty, explaining that the former Chief never left these mountains because he could not bear to see those loyal to the Mu clan slaughtered by unruly subordinates like Nie Hengcheng or the Six Sects.

Mu Qingyan’s own condition appears to take a turn for the worse as his poisoning symptoms seemingly become terminal. Claiming that even Physician Lei is helpless, he asks Cai Zhao to stay by his side during his final days. Moved by his vulnerability, Cai Zhao agrees to remain in the Li Sect to care for him, even refusing to leave when Song Yuzhi informs her that Qi Yunke and Song Shijun are waiting nearby.

Yan Xu is highly critical of Mu Qingyan’s attachment to Cai Zhao, warning him that his father’s mercy was his downfall and that a leader of the Mu clan must not let personal feelings ruin the Li Sect. However, Mu Qingyan reveals that his deteriorating health is a calculated ruse to lure out the remnants of Nie Zhe’s faction and identify the man in black.

Cai Zhao soon discovers the deception when she finds dregs of Xungu Grass in his medicine—a herb used specifically to simulate a deadly illness. Realizing she has been used as a pawn to bait enemies and manipulated into staying, Cai Zhao confronts Mu Qingyan in a heated argument. Mu Qingyan, dropping the act, tells her that as long as he is the Chief, she cannot leave without his permission.

The tension is interrupted when the man in black successfully infiltrates the dungeon, injuring Shisan and rescuing Nie Zhe. Before escaping, the intruder kills Sun Ruoshui with a precise strike to the Baihui acupoint. When Cai Zhao expresses her desire to pursue the killer and seek justice for her uncle, Mu Qingyan pushes her away, telling her to leave if she is so desperate for her freedom.

Cai Zhao finally departs with Song Yuzhi and reunites with her master, Qi Yunke, and Song Shijun. Upon her return to the Qingque Sect, Cai Zhao is met with Qi Yunke’s stern disapproval. He reminds her of Mu Qingyan’s capacity for deceit, specifically how he lived among them for months disguised as Chang Ning. He warns her that involvement with the demonic sect only brings danger to her family and friends.

Back in the familiar surroundings of her sect, Cai Zhao is haunted by the memories of her time in the Hanhai Mountains and her feelings for Mu Qingyan. When her maid offers her favorite wontons, she finds she no longer has the heart for them, emotionally scarred by the fallout of their relationship.
