After a sleepless night poring over photographs, Lin Nansheng finally discovered a crucial detail: the distinctive custom-made leather shoes worn by a passenger in a rickshaw outside the coffee shop, identifiable only to agents within the Secret Service. Using this seemingly minor clue, he traced the rickshaw driver, who was often accompanied by a young beggar. This beggar, in turn, had interacted with Zhu Yizhen.

By meticulously sifting through dozens of photos, Lin Nansheng pieced together Zhu Yizhen's movements, concluding that she was the intended contact for "The Mailman" on that day. To confirm his suspicions, Lin Nansheng sought out the beggar and offered him food. The beggar recalled being asked to deliver a message to Zhu Yizhen, stating it was "3 p. m. in the afternoon, under Zhejiang Road Bridge," but couldn't remember the appearance of the man who gave him the message.

Lin Nansheng reported his findings to Chen Moqun, then drove him to Shenjiang University where they observed Zhu Yizhen leaving. Lin Nansheng identified her as a fourth-year student and the daughter of Zhu Xiaoxian, a renowned financier. Recognizing her powerful background, Chen Moqun cautioned against rash action, instructing Lin Nansheng to meticulously investigate her routine without alerting her. Meanwhile, Ji Zhongyuan visited several hospitals near Da Tong Hotel, searching for Wang Zhi.

At Ren Ji Hospital, he noticed Secret Service agents guarding a ward and doctors and nurses attending to a patient, leading him to believe Wang Zhi was held there. His suspicious demeanor also caught the attention of Xu Bin, who recognized him from a previous encounter. Chen Moqun, whose surveillance on Gu Shenyan had been detected, decided to stop following him. Instead, he summoned Gu Shenyan and Wang Shi'an, instructing Gu Shenyan to give Wang Zhi's file to Wang Shi'an.

Chen Moqun announced that Wang Zhi had recovered consciousness and was to be transferred to Nanjing at 3 p. m. the following day, with Wang Shi'an overseeing the operation. Gu Shenyan, believing the news, urgently informed Ji Zhongyuan. Recognizing this as their only opportunity, they swiftly planned to eliminate Wang Zhi before the transfer. Ji Zhongyuan returned to Ren Ji Hospital, coordinating with a comrade, Fu An, to assess Wang Zhi's condition and the number of guards.

However, Xu Bin's heightened vigilance made it impossible to get close. The next day, as Ji Zhongyuan's team prepared their ambush around the hospital, Chen Moqun engaged Gu Shenyan in a game of chess in his office, using it as a deliberate delaying tactic. During their game, Chen Moqun subtly revealed the true nature of his plan, explaining that Wang Zhi had actually died days ago.

The entire hospital setup, with a fake patient and a staged transfer to Nanjing, was an elaborate deception to lure the Communists into a trap. Observing the staged transfer from a distance, Ji Zhongyuan noticed that the man on the stretcher had only minor abrasions on his ankles, not the deep, distinctive scars expected from years of wearing shackles. Realizing the deception, he immediately ordered his comrades to evacuate, confirming that the person was not Wang Zhi.

Simultaneously, Chen Moqun received a phone call from Xu Bin, reporting no Communist activity at the hospital, indicating his trap had failed to ensnare anyone. Unaware of the full extent of Chen Moqun's deception, Wang Shi'an proceeded with the transfer. On the way to Nanjing, he pulled over to relieve himself, only to witness the supposed unconscious "Wang Zhi," who was wearing an oxygen mask, also getting out of the car to relieve himself.

Furious at being made a fool, Wang Shi'an immediately took the wheel and drove back to the Shanghai station. Back in his office, Wang Shi'an drank in anger, feeling humiliated by Chen Moqun's scheme. Gu Shenyan approached him, feigning ignorance, and inquired about the failed transfer. He then tried to calm Wang Shi'an, explaining that Chen Moqun's actions were not personal but a strategic move to expose "The Mailman," and advised against further conflict.

Later, Gu Shenyan met with Ji Zhongyuan, apologizing for his prior impulsiveness regarding Wang Zhi, which almost put their organization at risk. Ji Zhongyuan understood his predicament and reassured him, agreeing that they should avoid using the same liaison points too frequently to prevent Chen Moqun from identifying patterns. He also decided to temporarily suspend radio communications, which were still being monitored, and would relay this to their superiors. Subsequently, Wang Shi'an visited Chen Moqun, accepting the situation.

He acknowledged understanding the strategic reasons behind concealing Wang Zhi's death and the failed lure. Taking responsibility, he volunteered to write the report to Nanjing himself, to address the fallout from the operation. In the following days, Lin Nansheng, disguised as a student, infiltrated Shenjiang University to closely monitor Zhu Yizhen. His observations revealed a consistent daily routine: she would commute from home to school, attend classes, and frequently visit the library. While her interactions with classmates appeared normal and she made no suspicious contacts, her regular visits to the school library remained the sole point of interest for Lin Nansheng.
