Bo Yan and Li Fu discussed the difficulties of human relationships. Li Fu, looking at a scroll of couples Bo Yan couldn't reconcile, joked that at this rate, it would take them ages to return to the heavenly realm, expressing his contentment with staying on Earth. He contrasted the suffering-free life of deities with the trials of human existence, suggesting that there is "always something more important than longevity."
He even proposed that Bo Yan make another mistake so they could remain in the mortal world forever, asking if Bo Yan was willing to give Shangguan Ya away. Bo Yan responded that he would never, but acknowledged it was ultimately up to her. He reiterated Li Fu's past advice that if one truly loves someone, they must make her happy, stating that he now believes this and will prioritize Shangguan Ya's happiness, leaving future matters for later.
Li Fu found Bo Yan's sentiment surprisingly sappy. Their conversation was cut short when Lian Li informed them that Shangguan Ya and Ouyang Jing had been taken to the Yamen by two troublemakers who had brought a large basket of toads. At the Yamen, both Shangguan Ya and Ouyang Jing offered to take responsibility. However, Li Fu stepped forward to protect Ouyang Jing, telling the Magistrate, "I will take responsibility for what I did.
This has nothing to do with Jing. I was the one who stood up for her." The Magistrate, without much deliberation, ordered Li Fu to be beaten twenty times. Just as Li Fu was dragged out, the plaintiff also demanded punishment for Top Matchmaker, accusing them of leaking customer information and providing poor matches for monetary gain. She cited laws requiring caning, fines, and even the removal of their signboard.
The Magistrate, reluctant to punish Shangguan Ya whom he had watched grow up, hesitated. Bo Yan then stepped forward, declaring, "I'm the person in charge of the Top Matchmaker. The leakage of customer information is due to my poor supervision. If you want to punish someone, just punish me." The Magistrate, finding this logical, ordered Bo Yan to receive twenty lashes. As Bo Yan was being caned, he reassured Li Fu that he would be fine.
Li Fu, however, realized that Bo Yan had used a celestial technique to transfer the pain to himself. He remarked, "Even God Yan'guang has to experience this," and joked that he suddenly didn't feel so much pain, understanding that whoever commits a wrongdoing should bear its consequences. Back at Top Matchmaker, Tong Er rushed to Bo Yan, feigning concern for his injuries.
Bo Yan took her aside and, using his powers, revealed her role in advising the mother and son to use toads as a scheme. He sternly warned her that while he would let it go this time due to her youth, he would not tolerate any future actions that harmed Top Matchmaker or Shangguan Ya. Tong Er, incensed by Bo Yan's favoritism towards Shangguan Ya, vowed to find a way to separate them.
Meanwhile, Shangguan Ya and Ouyang Jing discussed the heroic actions of the men in court. Ouyang Jing confessed that Li Fu's blunt but protective nature and his good looks charmed her. Shangguan Ya, in turn, admitted to Ouyang Jing, "Jing, I may have fallen in love with Bo Yan." Ouyang Jing was surprised, asking about Xu Yunchuan, Shangguan Ya's long-thought savior.
Shangguan Ya explained that while she still felt a flutter recalling her unidentified savior, her feelings for Xu Yunchuan were merely friendship; she felt no "heart-pounding" attraction to him. Shangguan Ya described this "heart-pounding" feeling as missing someone when they're absent, feeling it's never enough when they're present, getting angry when they're with other women, and feeling happy whenever she sees them.
Hearing this, Ouyang Jing realized she felt the same way about Li Fu and excitedly decided to go to him. Later, Ouyang Jing brought Li Fu some boiled pear with rock sugar. She then confessed, "I like you," reassuring him he didn't need to respond, she just wanted him to know.
Xu Yunchuan proposed using the Top Matchmaker's temporary closure to travel to neighboring counties to research local wedding customs and explore diverse local cultures, hoping to find solutions to the city's marriage problems. He presented a detailed proposal, outlining a quaint forest village, a bustling bridge town known for its God of River worship ceremony and delicious seafood, and the scenic Tai County. Shangguan Ya expressed interest in the bridge town and Tai County.
Xu Yunchuan attempted to exclude Bo Yan from the trip, citing his recent injuries and suggesting he remain at Top Matchmaker to recuperate. Tong Er enthusiastically volunteered to stay with Bo Yan. However, Shangguan Ya insisted that as the person in charge of Top Matchmaker, Bo Yan should go to experience the local customs. Tong Er, frustrated, retorted, but Bo Yan agreed to join, stating he was fine. Tong Er then declared she would go too.
During their travels in Tai County, Xu Yunchuan noted the striking differences in wedding customs despite its proximity to Yueyang City, and proudly mentioned sending local wedding items to Top Matchmaker. During a fishing excursion, Xu Yunchuan comically only managed to catch a blade of grass, while Bo Yan easily caught a large fish, teasing Xu Yunchuan about his lack of skill.
Later, during a drinking game, Xu Yunchuan drew a stick requiring him to arm wrestle with the person holding the red stick—Shangguan Ya. Despite promising to use only one finger, Xu Yunchuan was embarrassingly defeated by Shangguan Ya, thanks to Bo Yan's secret intervention. In the next round, Bo Yan drew a stick requiring him to drink cross-cupped wine with the person holding the blue stick—Shangguan Ya.
Xu Yunchuan immediately protested, declaring that only married couples drink cross-cupped wine and calling the game ridiculous. Annoyed by Shangguan Ya's continued closeness to Bo Yan, Tong Er plotted to teach her a lesson. She directed Shangguan Ya to a boat, claiming her bag was there. As Shangguan Ya retrieved it, Tong Er cast a spell and pushed the boat away, ensuring Shangguan Ya would drift away and her cries for help would be unheard by Bo Yan.
Later, Xu Yunchuan questioned Tong Er about Shangguan Ya's whereabouts. Tong Er admitted she had "sent her away" on a small boat, adding, "That would be her own bad luck" if anything happened. Xu Yunchuan expressed his dismay, asserting he would never harm Shangguan Ya, regardless of her feelings for him. Tong Er then revealed that Bo Yan was a deity and that mortal-god relationships were forbidden, implying they could never be together. Xu Yunchuan dismissed this as nonsense.
Furious, Bo Yan confronted Tong Er, demanding to know where Shangguan Ya was. Tong Er admitted she had put a barrier on the boat, making it impossible to find Shangguan Ya easily. Meanwhile, Shangguan Ya, adrift and terrified in the dark forest as a storm brewed, believed she was dreaming when Bo Yan appeared. He comforted her, carrying her to a cave to shelter from the rain.
Shangguan Ya recounted the strange events of the morning, how the boat had suddenly drifted, and her shouts for help went unanswered. She questioned Bo Yan about how he found her and where he got the sweet potatoes he brought. Bo Yan, unable to truthfully explain his divine abilities, skillfully dodged her questions, attributing the sweet potatoes to a roadside find, which Shangguan Ya found hard to believe given their rocky surroundings.
The next morning, Xu Yunchuan, who had been searching for Shangguan Ya all night, was stunned to see her walking with Bo Yan. He questioned how Bo Yan could have found her so quickly when there were no boats available the previous night, recalling Tong Er's earlier statement that Bo Yan was "not human."
Seeking to confirm Tong Er's assertion that Bo Yan was a deity, Xu Yunchuan recalled a book detailing how gods or demons would reveal their true forms when drunk. He believed this method could expose Bo Yan. He invited Bo Yan to his residence to discuss the ongoing marriage issues in Yueyang City, suggesting they talk over food and drinks. At his home, Xu Yunchuan offered Bo Yan a bottle of "Nu'er hong," claiming it was a fine wine.
His aide, however, had switched Xu Yunchuan's drink with water and given Bo Yan the city's strongest wine. Despite Bo Yan praising the wine, he quickly became incoherent after only a few cups, vomited on Xu Yunchuan, and passed out. Xu Yunchuan was surprised by his low alcohol tolerance, wondering if he wasn't a god after all. Inspired by her feelings, Ouyang Jing dressed in fine clothes and makeup to ask Li Fu out.
While initially impressed, Li Fu bluntly criticized her appearance, comparing her makeup to that of an opera singer and saying he preferred her usual look. He then made an excuse to leave for the Yamen, leaving a hurt Ouyang Jing behind and him regretfully holding the flowers he had bought for her. Having resolved her own feelings, Shangguan Ya decided to speak plainly with Xu Yunchuan.
She told Li Fu that she had made up her mind to tell Xu Yunchuan that despite his kindness and her gratitude, she now had someone else in her heart and saw them more as good friends than lovers. Li Fu supported her decision. As she entered Xu Yunchuan's room, she found a sleeping Bo Yan on the bed and Xu Yunchuan nearby, in the process of undressing, who, upon seeing her, immediately called out her name.
