Chief Zheng addressed the assembled troops on Qiaotou Island, commencing the "Operation Azure" drill with a solemn pre-war mobilization. He reflected on the nation's history, noting the 117 wars that occurred on Chinese soil in the 54 years leading up to the People's Republic of China's founding, and the 206 wars that have occurred globally in the 54 years since then, despite the so-called Cold War era.

Chief Zheng emphasized that war is not a matter of choice and that the army exists for the enduring peace of the Chinese nation. He warned the troops that "forgetting war leads to danger" and led them in a resolute rendition of the People's Liberation Army's anthem, officially marking the start of the exercise. The observation team, led by Chief Zheng, landed on Qiaotou Island.

Drone reconnaissance revealed the Blue Army's extensive underground fortifications and two days' worth of supplies, primarily compressed biscuits and canned food, along with special provisions for the observation team. Gao Liang, commander of the Blue Army's Special Operation Battalion, initially dismissed the Chief's request for a report, claiming he was busy. The observation team, particularly Qin Hanyong, quickly became frustrated when they saw the Blue Army's shore artillery positions conspicuously placed on the intertidal zone.

Qin Hanyong criticized this placement as vulnerable and ordered its immediate relocation. Gao Liang, however, explained that the artillery was deliberately positioned less than a hundred meters from the chiefs' observation post, acting as a "powerful insurance measure" since he believed Gu Yiye would not dare to attack such a location, effectively using the observers as human shields. Qin Hanyong condemned this as cheating and a disregard for their safety, demanding the position be moved.

Chief Zheng intervened, affirming Gao Liang's command authority on the island and advising against interference. He then revealed to the observation team that Gao Liang's exposed artillery position was merely a camouflage, a decoy meant to deceive the Red Army, and complimented Gao Liang for scoring an early psychological victory. Meanwhile, Gu Yiye, commanding the Red Army, prepared his first strike.

He ordered electromagnetic suppression to black out all electronic signals within a three-nautical-mile radius of Qiaotou Island, initiating "Operation Zero Clearance." The Dolphin Commando launched a sea assault, while the Eagle Squad, including Dao Xiaohui, deployed powered hang gliders for an airborne attack. Gao Liang, having already ordered most of his troops to bunkers, informed the drill directorate that his forces would not fire within 100 meters of the observation team.

The Red Army's initial missile strike hit two Blue Army targets. However, the subsequent commando assault met swift resistance. The Dolphin Commando's landing craft were sunk, and 25 Red Army soldiers were captured. Of the Eagle Squad's three powered hang gliders, two were hit and forced to withdraw, while the third, piloted by Dao Xiaohui, made an emergency landing near Qiaotou Island's main peak. Gu Yiye, despite the setback, ordered humane treatment for the captured commandos.

During an assessment, Song Jianshe expressed dissatisfaction with Gu Yiye's initial failure, prompting Chief Zheng to reprimand him for relying on "old tricks" and advocating for the innovative approaches of younger commanders. Gao Liang, reviewing the battle details, suspected Gu Yiye's "failed" landing was a calculated move, especially since Dao Xiaohui's hang glider hadn't emitted smoke, indicating it wasn't truly disabled. His suspicions were confirmed when Dao Xiaohui, who had hidden after his crash landing, ambushed and abducted Niu Mancang.

Soon after, the Red Army launched a second, more devastating attack. Missiles obliterated the Blue Army's airfield, ground-based missile sites, and sea support ships, effectively neutralizing their air, land, and sea coordination. The Red Army also captured three transport boats and deciphered the Blue Army's radio code.

The Director Department recognized this as a high-stakes gamble by Gu Yiye that had paid off, leaving Qiaotou Island an isolated outpost, with the Blue Army estimated to last no more than 48 hours. Reacting to this dire situation, Gao Liang adjusted his defenses, moving missile companies underground, deploying anti-chemical and engineer units to the pier, and reinforcing beach mines. He galvanized his troops, declaring the exercise a "real war" and the Red Army their "enemy."

As the Blue Army mounted a tenacious defense, Gu Yiye's repeated assaults by land and sea were repelled by extensive minefields and heavy firepower. Gao Liang, in turn, employed psychological tactics on his prisoners. He interrogated a captured Red Army soldier, who claimed to have attended the Hunter School with Gao Liang. Gao Liang spoke of the intense anti-interrogation training they both received there and promised the captive similar "training," albeit with a warning to avoid internal injuries.

Qin Hanyong criticized Gao Liang for his defensive posture, urging more flexible, offensive tactics, but Gao Liang sharply retorted, asserting his command. Meanwhile, from deep within the bunker, the Red Army prisoners, including a disheartened "Xiao Gui," defiantly sang "Unity is Strength," bolstering their spirits, with one of them reminding them that their infiltration mission had been successful. Gu Yiye then employed a new strategy: sending soldiers disguised as fishermen to infiltrate the island.

Despite Gao Liang's vehement opposition, citing the established "seal the sea and air" rule, the observation team, swayed by Song Jianshe's appeal to "military-civilian relationship," ordered the fishing boat to dock. Gao Liang quickly identified the "fishermen" as young Red Army soldiers by their uniform haircuts and distinct Sichuan and Hunan dialects, confronting the observation team over their interference.

He presented an ultimatum: either the observation team leave the island, or they would be reclassified as hostages to ensure their non-interference. Chief Zheng, acknowledging the observation team's mistake, reluctantly agreed, recognizing the necessity of adapting to modern warfare tactics which include civilian involvement. He directed the drill directorate to officially change the observation team's status to "hostages" and ordered the Blue Army to provide the "fishermen" with necessary supplies and ensure their safety, a directive that infuriated Gao Liang.

Gao Liang, after sending the first group of "fishermen" back (with replenished supplies), ordered subsequent "fishing boats" to be turned away, threatening to fire empty shells if they attempted to dock. The Director Department analyzed the ongoing battle, with Xia Lin remarking on Gu Yiye's use of "civilian participation" and Gao Liang's "bitter trick" involving the chiefs as hostages. She concluded that regardless of the winner, Troop A would gain invaluable experience.

After four failed Red Army assaults, Gu Yiye decided to halt operations for the night, ordering his artillery to replenish ammunition and conserve energy. He planned a concentrated "turtle-catching" assault for the following morning, confident in securing the island.
