Road to Success Episode 5 Recap
> Road to Success Recaps
Lin Wanxing was peacefully sleeping in on a weekend morning when Wang Fa barged into her room, insisting they begin their lifestyle swap. His first challenge for her was outdoor cycling, with a target of burning 800 calories in exactly two hours and nine minutes. Lin Wanxing scoffed at his hyper-precise timeline. Knowing she did not actually know how to ride a bicycle, Wang Fa mockingly suggested she could scoot along on one foot or simply admit defeat.
Determined and stubborn, she snapped back that the phrase "admit defeat" was not in her vocabulary. Wang Fa then fastened a sports watch onto her wrist, which synced directly to his phone so he could monitor her performance data in real time. Over an hour later, Wang Fa noticed very little progress on his tracking app. Realizing she was struggling, he headed to the neighborhood park to find her.
To his amusement, Lin Wanxing had attached training wheels to her bicycle and was happily racing a group of neighborhood kids. When the children teased her for using training wheels, she proudly dubbed them her secret weapon. Watching her effortless and genuine warmth with the children, Wang Fa began to doubt his own suspicions. He wondered if this woman, who hit it off so easily with kids, could really be the scheming Spade Q he was looking for.
When the race ended, Wang Fa pointed out that despite riding for over an hour, she had only burned 120 calories because her heart rate was far too low. To burn more, she would need to speed up or tackle some hills. Determined to prove him wrong, Lin Wanxing pushed onward, but disaster soon struck when one of her training wheels broke off, sending her crashing to the ground with a painful leg cramp.
Wang Fa knelt down and deftly massaged her leg to relieve the cramp. Though she complained about his lack of empathy when he urged her to keep riding to burn the remaining calories, her physical state forced her to concede. She admitted defeat for the morning but promised that his turn to experience her lifestyle in the afternoon would not be so easy.
To kick off the afternoon, she took him to a modest roadside food stall famous for its small wontons. As they sat down, Wang Fa quietly noted her preferences—she loved spicy food and despised coriander, while he himself could not handle the heat. Lin Wanxing began happily swallowing the boiling hot wontons along with the soup, explaining that the thin-skinned wrappers made them perfect for drinking rather than chewing.
Skeptical but unwilling to back down, Wang Fa tried to copy her, only to instantly burn his mouth. Amused by his dramatic reaction, she teased him for being delicate and finally allowed him to use a spoon. Next, Lin Wanxing decided to tackle his obsession with time by banning him from checking his watch, hoping to disrupt his rigid, disciplined mind.
When he expressed anxiety about missing their scheduled duck boat ride, she laughed it off and introduced him to what she called the Ripple Timing Method. She explained that the natural flow of the water could keep time, with each expanding ring representing a second. Though Wang Fa initially accused her of playing mind games, he reluctantly closed his eyes and followed her instructions, imagining the lake as a canvas with ripples as brushstrokes.
The peaceful atmosphere and gentle rhythm worked wonders on his chronic insomnia, and he soon fell fast asleep on a lounge chair. When he woke up, Lin Wanxing admitted her grandfather used to use that exact trick to put her to sleep as a child. She pointed out that she had effectively cured his sleeplessness for a brief moment, but when Wang Fa immediately checked his watch, she declared him the loser of the afternoon round.
Stubborn as ever, Wang Fa argued that since she had lost the morning challenge and he had lost the afternoon, they were now tied. Determined to turn the tables before the day ended, Lin Wanxing devised a plan to close her remaining calorie gap to reach the 800-calorie target. She posted in a group chat looking for a gaming partner and recruited Lin Lu.
In exchange for her carrying him through his game, Lin Lu agreed to run on her treadmill while wearing her sports watch. Upstairs, Wang Fa was baffled to see her calorie count and heart rate suddenly skyrocketing on his phone. When he went downstairs to investigate, he caught them in the act: Lin Lu was drenching the treadmill in sweat while Lin Wanxing was casually lounging nearby, completely absorbed in her mobile game.
Wang Fa smugly informed his landlady that her blatant cheating meant she had officially lost the bet. Later that night, Wang Fa was in his room reviewing Lin Wanxing's profile. Although her habits matched almost every item on his checklist for Spade Q, his intuition suggested she might not be the culprit. A knock on the door interrupted his thoughts.
Lin Wanxing, refusing to give up, proposed a desperate trade: if he agreed to coach the Hongjing No. 8 High School football team, she would guarantee a cure for his chronic insomnia. Seeing this as a perfect opportunity to closely observe her and uncover the truth, Wang Fa agreed to the deal. Overjoyed, Lin Wanxing immediately contacted Fu Xinshu to set up a new team group chat.
Meanwhile, the players were gathering at a local diner, enjoying some food prepared by Zheng Feiyang. When Fu Xinshu announced that the former Nanton FC youth coach had officially signed on, the boys were dumbfounded, jokingly wondering if Lin Wanxing had resorted to kidnapping to get him to agree. Lin Wanxing then renamed the chat Little Savage Tribe, a quirky title that left Wang Fa highly curious, though she brushed it off as a simple nickname.
The next afternoon, the players gathered early on the field. Qin Ao was highly skeptical, grumbling that they should walk away if the coach was even a minute late, convinced a high-profile coach from Nanton would not take them seriously. To their surprise, Wang Fa arrived right on schedule.
He gathered the team and introduced himself before systematically assigning their positions, naming Fu Xinshu and Zheng Ren as midfielders, Chen Jianghe and Qin Ao as forwards, and Feng Suo as goalkeeper, among others. He announced that training would run from three to five every afternoon. Lin Wanxing delivered a dramatic, old-school speech about the team rising to new heights, which earned a quiet chuckle from Wang Fa.
To commemorate the first day, the players eagerly produced a football for everyone to sign. When the ball was handed to Wang Fa, he hesitated with the pen in his hand. Lin Wanxing playfully reassured him that it was not a binding contract of lifetime servitude, but merely a sweet memento of their partnership. With a sigh, he finally put pen to paper.
The players were eager to learn advanced tactics like quick passing combinations or Nanton's signature high press, but Wang Fa simply ordered them to start running laps. After three warm-up laps, Fu Xinshu approached the coach to ask for the next set of instructions, only to be told to keep running. Meanwhile, Lin Wanxing watched from the sidelines, playfully bickering with Wang Fa over a bag of snacks. As the afternoon wore on, the grueling, repetitive exercise took its toll.
By the tenth lap, the players were gasping for air. Fu Xinshu asked once more if they could move on, but Wang Fa's cold response remained unchanged. Pushed to his limit, Qin Ao angrily stopped and confronted the coach, arguing that endless slow-paced jogging would only ruin their speed and explosiveness. He accused Wang Fa of looking down on their school and intentionally playing them for fools with a mindless drill.
Frustrated and insulted, Qin Ao walked off the field, and the rest of the team slowly dispersed. Later, a disheartened Fu Xinshu sought out Lin Wanxing, hoping the coach had left some sort of explanation. Lin Wanxing gently explained that she could not force anyone to train, as staying on the team was entirely the players' own decision.
Fu Xinshu sighed, noting bitterly that neither she nor the coach had signed the football, leaving him to wonder if they both secretly believed the ragtag team was simply not worth their time.
