Pei Sheng then realizes that Zheng Sunian is the top-scoring student in the cultural course, having achieved over 500 marks.
Thrilled to be roommates with such an accomplished individual, Pei Sheng attempts to hug Zheng Sunian, who, visibly uncomfortable, tries to avoid the physical contact. Pei Sheng jokes that they are now like brothers and wants to absorb some of Zheng Sunian's "top student's aura." Meanwhile, Zhang Qi's mother urges him to hurry as his car to the airport has arrived. She meticulously checks his luggage, advising him to be careful at the airport.
Zhang Qi, reassuring her he is an adult, embraces his mother, promising he won't let her or his late father down. His mother, calling him her "little brat," then hands him some money, which he initially declines. As Zhang Qi’s car drives away, both he and his mother secretly shed tears. Later, his mother visits his father's memorial, proudly announcing that Zhang Qi has been accepted into the University of Science and Technology.
She expresses how all her years of hardship, during which she often blamed his father, now feel completely worth it. Showing her wedding ring, she vows never to remove it and demands that his father repay his debts in the next life by treating her and their son exceptionally well and never abandoning them again. Xin Jie visits Yu Dongge (Ms. Yu) at her workplace, surprising her.
Ms. Yu inquires about Xin Jie's health, to which Xin Jie replies that she is trying to be more active as lying down made her health worse. Xin Jie presents a painting she drew many years ago and asks Ms. Yu to help her sell it, explaining that after another illness, her family is struggling, and Wu Huan is suffering because of their financial difficulties. She has no one else to turn to.
Ms. Yu praises the "exceptional" drawing but admits she doesn't know many art buyers and suggests taking it to Master Luo. Xin Jie refuses, stating she is "too ashamed to see Master" and only needs enough money for meals. When Ms. Yu offers her money directly, Xin Jie declines, emphasizing that they are not indebted to each other and she is already grateful for Ms. Yu's help. She then leaves, thanking Ms. Yu.
In school, the teacher reminds the senior students to finalize their university and major choices, using Zhang Qi's early admission as an example. Shao Xue and Tang Ya are both undecided about their future paths, with Shao Xue planning to ask Zheng Sunian for advice. Tang Ya expresses envy for Shao Xue's strong support system. Later, Bai Yunsheng talks to his long-distance girlfriend, Yunjin, on the phone. Yunjin asks about his military training and if any pretty girls are pursuing him.
Bai Yunsheng reassures her that no one is as beautiful as she is and no one is pursuing him, promising to explore Beijing. Pei Sheng overhears and makes an interjecting comment, irritating Bai Yunsheng. A sudden downpour during military training sends Zheng Sunian back to his dorm, where he finds Shao Xue waiting, soaked. Pei Sheng makes suggestive comments about their "neighbor" relationship, making Shao Xue uncomfortable.
Zheng Sunian helps Shao Xue dry her clothes and hair before taking her for coffee. Shao Xue, feeling lost about her major, seeks his advice. Zheng Sunian suggests she consider "minority languages," explaining that it requires a good command of English and could lead to a career as a translator. Shao Xue is delighted, feeling that Zheng Sunian truly understands her.

Shiyin, who thought she was the only guest, becomes visibly upset, believing Wu Huan had deceived her. Xin Jie, unaware of the tension, praises Tang Ya's gift and invites her to stay for dinner, further enraging Shiyin. Feeling jealous, Shiyin abruptly leaves. Wu Huan chases after her, trying to explain that he truly had no idea Tang Ya would come. He pleads with Shiyin not to be "hostile" towards Tang Ya and to try to be friends.
Shiyin refuses to listen, retorting that if she were truly "willful," she wouldn't have bothered to come. Frustrated by her unyielding attitude, Wu Huan declares he will no longer force her to do anything, which causes Shiyin to storm off angrily. Inspired by Zheng Sunian's advice, Shao Xue returns home and begins translating an English passage from a book, reading it aloud to her parents. She enthusiastically announces her decision to pursue a career as a translator.
Her parents express their full support. That night, Shao Xue calls Zheng Sunian to share her exciting news about choosing to study minority languages, telling him that his support means everything and she couldn't have slept without telling him. Overhearing the call, Pei Sheng teases Zheng Sunian about his "clingy neighbor." Later, Bai Yunsheng asks Zheng Sunian for help finding high-quality silk in Beijing for his girlfriend, who makes cheongsams.
Zheng Sunian suggests asking Shao Xue's mother, Yu Dongge, who works in textile restoration at the Restoration Department. Bai Yunsheng agrees to visit, with Pei Sheng insisting on joining them. The next day, the three friends head to the Restoration Department. They encounter Shao Xue, who is bringing lunch for her mother, and learn that her school is closed due to an adults' self-study exam. Inside, Bai Yunsheng spots Ms. Kang.
He greets her, stating that while he had many things to say, seeing her doing well makes them unnecessary, and then abruptly leaves. Puzzled, Shao Xue asks Ms. Kang about her relationship with Bai Yunsheng. Yu Dongge (Ms. Yu) interjects that both Ms. Kang and Bai Yunsheng are from Suzhou.
Ms. Kang then reveals that the man Shao Xue once saw in a photograph is, in fact, Bai Yunsheng's father, and she had fallen in love with him in her youth without knowing he was already married. Shao Xue reflects on the complexity of the situation, asking Zheng Sunian if anyone was truly at fault in Ms. Kang's story. Zheng Sunian suggests that matters of the heart are often too convoluted for anyone, even those involved, to fully comprehend.
He deflects Shao Xue's subsequent inquiry about his own romantic life by humorously stating he rarely exchanges more than three sentences with girls. Shao Xue then teases him about possibly gaining weight, while he playfully teases her back. After leaving the Restoration Department, Zheng Sunian visits his father, Zheng Jian, at home. He observes that his father, living alone in a dimly lit house, hasn't updated the calendar in a month.
His father attempts to cook him Noodles with soybean paste, but the sauce is burnt, and he laments his out-of-practice cooking skills. Zheng Sunian reassures him and insists on eating the noodles as they are. He also notices that Mimi, the stray cat his mother once cared for, has returned and is now keeping his father company. Wu Huan later confides in Shao Xue and Tang Ya that his recent job interview was unsuccessful.
Tang Ya promptly offers her assistance, having already researched various logistics companies near his home. She highlights that smaller companies might offer more flexibility, allowing him to better care for his mother. Wu Huan thanks her for her help. Overhearing this, Shiyin becomes furious, confiding in Shao Xue that she believes Tang Ya constantly "steals her things" and "goes against her," first by "stealing" Wu Huan, and now by interfering with his job search.
Shao Xue, however, suggests that Shiyin seems to be the one opposing Tang Ya. Upon returning to the dorm, Pei Sheng exuberantly greets Zheng Sunian, lamenting that his time without him was "excruciating" because Bai Yunsheng had been uncommunicative, only responding with monosyllabic grunts. Zheng Sunian calmly suggests that giving Bai Yunsheng some space to "cool down" would be beneficial. Pei Sheng, however, counters that he only experienced "coldness" from Bai Yunsheng.
He then brings up Xue Ning, the "beauty of the design course," who has been persistently pursuing Bai Yunsheng since military training began, even following him from their dorm to the self-study room, despite Bai Yunsheng's clear attempts to distance himself. Pei Sheng observes that while Zheng Sunian and Bai Yunsheng are equally attractive, Zheng Sunian, who was once popular with many girls, is now no longer pursued. He questions the reason for this change. Zheng Sunian speculates it might be due to a comment he made during a class meeting, leaving Pei Sheng to wonder what he said.
