After being kicked in the head by a donkey, Song Cixing (Emilia Bennett) suddenly awakens to the truth. She realizes that she is actually living inside a novel, where she exists only as a cannon-fodder character meant to contrast with her beloved, pampered cousin—the story’s favored girl. In the original plot, Song Cixing’s fate is tragic and miserable.
Determined to change her destiny, Song Cixing decides to marry Su Mingyuan (William Carter), the nation’s richest man, who is rumored by the outside world to be a “cold-blooded psychopath.” She treats becoming a full-time wife as if it were a high-paying job. Thus, the two of them begin an unusual and rather “abnormal” trial marriage.
