In the story, she is stripped of her inheritance, discarded, and left dead on the street.
To change her fate, she publicly breaks off the engagement—and runs straight into Huo Chenye (Christ), the younger son of the Huo family.
Huo Chenye is the novel's dark and obsessive villain. Raised under constant oppression, he suffers from a touch-starvation condition and harbors a deep, burning desire to take everything from his brother Huo Xize.
When he learns that Huo Xize was set to marry Qi Jiujiu, he returns to the capital and steals her away. But as he spends time with her, her warmth begins to heal his darkness—and he falls deeply in love with her.
