Su Yuying came to visit Xiao Chengxu, who, in a dazed state, mistook her for Helan Mingyu. When he realized it was not Mingyu, he let go of her hand with a look of disappointment. Su Yuying, feeling hurt, attempted to reveal the truth to him. Just as she was about to speak, Xiao Chengxuan rushed in and tried to stop her, but it was too late.
Su Yuying revealed that the consort His Majesty was marrying that night was none other than Helan Mingyu. Xiao Chengxu, his face already pale, demanded confirmation from Xiao Chengxuan. Upon hearing the affirmative, he coughed up a mouthful of blood and stumbled out into the pouring rain. Meanwhile, in her wedding chamber, Helan Mingyu was drinking heavily.
Ling Zhen'er tried to stop her, reminding her that it was her wedding day with Xiao Chengrui and she should not drink too much. Helan Mingyu expressed her deep sorrow, lamenting that she could not go to see Xiao Chengxu, nor could she break off the marriage or even die.
She recalled telling her Sister Qi when she was young that she didn't believe in fate and would fight against it, but now she realized that some things are inescapable and cannot be overcome. Xiao Chengrui arrived at the wedding chamber, looking displeased to find Helan Mingyu without her ceremonial crown and with her fan discarded. Helan Mingyu quickly rose and apologized, explaining that the crown was too heavy for her to keep on.
Xiao Chengrui proceeded to officially confer her as Consort Li. At the same moment, Xiao Chengxu, riding at full speed towards the palace, collapsed from his horse. Xiao Chengxuan, who had followed, tried to dissuade him from going further, insisting it was useless to create a scene as the marriage had already been settled and Mingyu was now married to His Majesty.
Xiao Chengxu, however, refused to believe it, declaring that even if she married someone else, he needed to hear it from her own lips, otherwise he would never accept it. In her chamber, Helan Mingyu drank the ceremonial wedding wine, whispering "Chengxu, I'm sorry" in her heart. As Xiao Chengxu approached the palace, he heard the tolling bells, signifying the completion of the ceremony.
His heart turned to ashes, realizing everything was over, and he collapsed in the rain, held by a distraught Xiao Chengxuan. Later, in the wedding chamber, Xiao Chengrui noticed Helan Mingyu's red eyes and asked if she had been crying. She denied it. He apologized for his delay, explaining he had rushed to see his Ninth Brother, Xiao Chengxu, whose wounds were quite severe. He reassured her that Xiao Chengxu was young and would likely recover after resting.
Helan Mingyu then vomited and immediately apologized, claiming she was too dizzy from the wine to properly accompany him and asked him to return another day. Xiao Chengrui was displeased but left after Helan Mingyu knelt to beg for his forgiveness. After he left, Helan Mingyu burned her red wedding dress, her eyes filled with despair. Xiao Chengxu was left severely wounded and had now contracted a chill.
An Imperial Physician informed Xiao Chengxuan that if the wounds became infected, even the gods would not be able to save him. Helan Mingyu asked Ling Zhen'er to go and check on Xiao Chengxu's condition. Ling Zhen'er agreed and told Mingyu to return to her room to await news. Inside, Helan Mingyu refused to wash up.
A palace maid, hearing night owls outside, spoke of an old superstition that night owls cry to count the hair on a sick person's eyebrows, and once counted, the person dies. Hearing this, Helan Mingyu ran into the courtyard in a frenzy, trying to chase away the night owls, terrified that the superstition might come true and Xiao Chengxu would not survive. Ling Zhen'er soon returned, stating she hadn't seen Xiao Chengxu directly, fearing her presence would upset him further.
She could only say that his condition remained uncertain. The next morning, Xiao Chengrui was still displeased about the previous night's events. Helan Yunqi immediately spoke on Mingyu's behalf, explaining that Mingyu was still young and would become accustomed to her new status after following the northern region's ancestral customs and serving tea to all the princes and lords.
Xiao Chengrui softened somewhat, remarking that while Mingyu was beautiful, she was also as cold as jade, but he believed she would naturally warm up if held in his palm for a long time. The tea ceremony began, and Helan Mingyu served tea to various princes. Suddenly, Xiao Chengxu arrived, supported by Xiao Chengxuan. Helan Mingyu was deeply affected, her eyes filled with both concern and resignation, but Xiao Chengxu avoided her gaze.
Xiao Chengrui welcomed Xiao Chengxu, noting his improved complexion, and urged him to take care of his health. Xiao Chengxu stated he came to join the day's celebration. Helan Yunqi intervened, explaining that Xiao Chengxu and Mingyu had been like siblings since childhood, and now, as sister-in-law, they were truly one family. She urged Mingyu not to delay the auspicious time. Helan Mingyu continued serving tea to the other princes, until it was Xiao Chengxu's turn.
She turned to face him, while he kept his head down. As she poured the tea with trembling hands and presented it to him, their eyes met, both filled with tears, their faces pale. Suddenly, Xiao Chengxu coughed up blood. Everyone was alarmed, and an Imperial Physician was immediately summoned. Xiao Chengxu was escorted to the Warm Pavilion, casting a profound look at Helan Mingyu as he left. Helan Mingyu, terrified, broke down in tears.
Helan Mingyu rushed to the Warm Pavilion to see Xiao Chengxu, but Xiao Chengxuan blocked her. She pushed past him, desperate to speak with Xiao Chengxu. However, Xiao Chengxu was consumed by bitterness, reminding her of her broken promise to wait for him by looking at the moon, counting the days until his return.
Helan Mingyu tried to explain that he didn't understand the hardships she endured, but Xiao Chengxu, full of resentment, declared that he had mistakenly trusted and loved her. He added that if he was forced to see her "benevolent and righteous" face again, he would rather die. Helan Yunqi then arrived. Xiao Chengxu, with Xiao Chengxuan's help, left the pavilion, refusing to remain in Helan Mingyu's presence.
Helan Mingyu was heartbroken but refused to blame him, understanding that he was unaware of her true circumstances. Helan Yunqi explained that Xiao Chengxu's wounds were very serious, and his refusal to rest over the past few days, coupled with a newly caught cold, made his treatment very difficult.
Helan Yunqi promised to ensure his recovery with the best physicians and medicine, but she sternly reminded Helan Mingyu to understand that she and Xiao Chengxu were now in-laws, and her husband was Xiao Chengrui. She pressed Mingyu to seriously consider on whom her future and happiness depended. Helan Mingyu's body weakened, and she slumped, questioning what future or happiness she could possibly have. An Imperial Physician later reported that Xiao Chengxu was refusing his medicine, essentially seeking death, and there was nothing they could do.
