When Hu Qiumin woke up, she found a new Walkman on the table. Believing it was a gift from her mother, Hu Yue, she thanked her, but Hu Yue denied buying it and confirmed that her brother hadn't sent any package. Hu Qiumin then wondered if Yang Songbai had bought it for her, but Hu Yue quickly dismissed the idea, stating that he would never spend so much money.
Hu Yue then criticized Yang, saying he went to sea for a supposed meeting just because he didn't want to stay home. Hu Qiumin retorted that her mother was being sarcastic. Hu Yue shot back, accusing Hu Qiumin of siding with Yang because of the gift. Hu Qiumin then escalated the argument, accusing her mother of deliberately creating factions and being the reason their family was falling apart. Upset, Hu Yue left for school.
Later that morning, Yuan Shanqing prepared to take her younger sister, Zi, to Granny Chen’s house before school. Jia Daiyu intervened, explaining that Granny Chen’s son did not treat Zi well. She offered to have herself and a pregnant colleague, Aunt Ma, look after Zi instead, considering it payment for Yuan Shanqing’s work. Yuan Shanqing gratefully accepted.
Meanwhile, Qiang Xiaowa, talking to his grandpa, revealed he had reserved a large amount of unsold seafood to invite his friends over for dinner that night. During a casual chat with Cheng Miaomiao and Li Si, Hu Yue showed them the new Walkman, reiterating her suspicion that Yang Songbai was the mysterious benefactor. Cheng Miaomiao was impressed by its sound quality, while Li Si complained about not getting a turn to listen.
In gym class, Yuan Shanqing repeatedly accidentally hit Luo Zheng with a volleyball. Each time, she apologized profusely, but Luo Zheng, instead of getting angry, playfully remarked that her aim wouldn't be so accurate if she were doing it on purpose. Cheng Yaya suggested he and Yuan Shanqing switch positions, but Luo Zheng continued to play. After class, Qiang Xiaowa invited Cheng Miaomiao to his home to share the crabs he had prepared.
However, Cheng Miaomiao informed him that Jia Baoshan was hosting a barbecue for everyone that evening. Qiang Xiaowa initially hesitated, feeling unfamiliar with Jia Baoshan, but Cheng Miaomiao insisted that he join, stating that Jia Baoshan was family and it was a group activity. At the barbecue, a drunken Jia Baoshan started delivering a rambling "life lesson" to the children, lamenting his childhood experiences of compulsory "big noodles" in kindergarten and the pressures of school.
He expressed his bitterness about being compared to others and being called a "loser" by his own father. He then recounted his past heartbreak, claiming he and Wang Chanchan were "separated by force" due to her parents disapproving of his job, but also admitting Wang Chanchan herself eventually dumped him. He complained about spending eighty yuan on a watch and giving her two gold necklaces, feeling like a "sucker."
He dramatically declared that he, who had "fought tigers and caught turtles," was ultimately "knocked down" by Wang Chanchan. Cheng Miaomiao and Li Si listened intently to his stories. Later, Jia Daiyu, Niu Lingling, and Hu Yue went to a dance hall. Hu Yue was visibly upset, confiding in her friends that she felt Yang Songbai was now favoring Hu Qiumin because of the Walkman.
She recounted how touched she had been by Yang’s care during her appendicitis surgery, believing he had changed, but now that she had recovered, he had reverted to his old ways, leaving her to lament her "fate." Jia Daiyu and Niu Lingling advised Hu Yue to assert herself more in her marriage. They encouraged her to stop catering to Yang, reminding her of her own value and contributions to the family.
Niu Lingling even suggested that divorce was not illegal and offered to set her up with a better man if she chose to leave Yang. Feeling a mix of emotions, the three women eventually drank themselves into a stupor, deciding not to go home until the party ended. Back home, Hu Yue stumbled in drunk, demanding more wine and proclaiming her right to drink as a mother.
Yang Songbai tried to coax her to bed, but she insisted the house and floor were hers to do with as she pleased. Hu Qiumin, peering from her room, secretly smiled and then laughed at her mother’s drunken antics. Meanwhile, Cheng Miaomiao, Cheng Yaya, and Cheng Pengfei faced a similar challenge with Jia Daiyu and Jia Baoshan.
Jia Daiyu, also heavily intoxicated, kept asking Cheng Pengfei who held more power in their marriage and if he was afraid of her, to which he reluctantly agreed. Niu Lingling, at her own home, also caused a drunken scene with Li Dahai, demanding alcohol and accusing him of still pining for his "ex-girlfriend."
Despite his reassurances that she and their son were his priority, she called him a liar and bemoaned her past divorce, shouting, "An unpleasant marriage is not a good marriage!" Li Dahai, attempting to soothe her, listened as she called their son "not handsome" and criticized his parenting, blaming it on his own father's strict upbringing. The next morning, both Jia Daiyu and Jia Baoshan called their mother to complain about each other’s drunken behavior.
Hu Yue, nursing a hangover, received an encouraging word and a new lipstick from Hu Qiumin. Feeling empowered, Hu Yue refused to make breakfast for Yang Songbai, telling him to buy food outside and that she would be busy with work and dance practice after. Yang Songbai was bewildered by her sudden change in attitude. At school, Cheng Miaomiao’s English teacher, Han Shu, expressed extreme concern over Cheng Miaomiao's consistently poor English grades and incomplete assignments.
Han Shu insisted that English was a critical subject affecting her college entrance exams and, despite Cheng Miaomiao’s pleas for an "internal" resolution, threatened to call her parents. Desperate, Cheng Miaomiao sought out Jia Baoshan for help. Jia Baoshan, recalling his own childhood trauma from teachers calling his parents, promised to go to the school and "teach the teacher a lesson," but warned Cheng Miaomiao not to tell her mother.
That weekend, Cheng Yaya announced his upcoming birthday and invited his friends, including Yuan Shanqing and Luo Zheng, to go roller-skating. Luo Zheng confidently declared himself superior to everyone else in roller-skating. The following day, Cheng Miaomiao, brimming with confidence, informed Cheng Yaya that Jia Baoshan had arrived at school and was headed to the office.
Jia Baoshan, dressed in a suit, mistakenly burst into the school office and began berating Director Xiao, who was eating Shepherd's purse dumplings, for eating during class and neglecting her duties, believing her to be Cheng Miaomiao’s English teacher. When the real English teacher, Han Shu, entered, Jia Baoshan was immediately smitten by her youthful beauty. He abandoned his "crusade" and, to Cheng Miaomiao’s dismay, completely switched sides.
Inside the office, Jia Baoshan turned on Cheng Miaomiao, scolding her fiercely in front of Han Shu for her abysmal 30-point English score. He pompously declared his family's emphasis on foreign language education, bragging about his own supposed talent in languages (mistaking dialects for "less common languages"). He then publicly blamed Cheng Miaomiao's lack of talent on his sister (Cheng Miaomiao’s mother), claiming she had a lisp as a child.
He then assured Han Shu that he would personally supervise Cheng Miaomiao’s English studies. Enraged by his betrayal, Cheng Miaomiao called him a "traitor" and threatened to tell their grandmother about his smoking habit. Jia Baoshan desperately tried to appease her, calling it an "internal family conflict."
Director Xiao, the one Jia Baoshan had initially insulted, intervened, declaring that Jia Baoshan was not a legitimate parent and ordered Uncle Zhang, the guard, to remove him from the premises, strictly prohibiting unauthorized personnel. Cheng Miaomiao, utterly defeated, was then sent back to class.
