He Simu killed He Yan, reasoning that if the woman were to die while consumed by such intense hatred, she would inevitably summon malevolent spirits to torment the mortal realm. Sensing the potential for suspicion, He Simu immediately feigned distress, claiming she acted in a fit of rage because her own hometown had been massacred by the Chong people. Duan Xu intervened to smooth things over, though he privately warned her against drawing his sword so impulsively again.
While He Simu insisted her actions were intended to prevent catastrophe, Duan Xu remained largely indifferent to her underlying motives. After Duan Xu left, Fengyi reported his findings: the man currently serving as a Censorial Counselor in the capital, Fang Xianye, is the true Duan Xu, while the man holding command in Shuozhou is actually the son of the Minister of Rites, operating under an assumed identity. It is clear that the real Duan Xu is targeting the impostor.
Meanwhile, the fake Duan Xu was occupied with the aftermath of the granary fire. He Yan had stolen the keys from a guard named Xiao Xie, revealing she had intimate knowledge of the joint security arrangements between the Tabai Army and the Lin family. Duan Xu ordered Han Lingqiu to conduct a thorough investigation into the security failure. With Shuozhou facing a critical food shortage, Duan Xu devised a plan to intercept enemy supplies.
He leveraged the Lin family’s connections to monitor enemy grain shipments along the northern routes. Before setting off, he instructed Commandant Wu to remain in the city and take command of the Tabai Army should anything happen to him, expressing his trust in Wu’s ability to lead the men. He also sought reinforcements from Marshal Qin.
The mission led by Duan Xu and Han Lingqiu was a success, but they soon realized it was a trap set by the Chong army, who specifically intended to capture both of them alive. Just as the situation grew dire, He Simu intervened, revealing her identity as a Sovereign of Spirits. She claimed she had struck a deal with a dying soldier to protect the Tabai forces.
The troops were stunned when she summoned a flock of crows to decimate the Chong forces, leaving only her and the soldiers unscathed. She demanded Duan Xu’s five senses in exchange for the favor. Having heard legends of such spirits, Duan Xu was amazed to see her power firsthand and asked her to help him preserve the memory of their encounter.
Upon their return, Duan Xu had Han Lingqiu detained, suspecting him of being a spy because the enemy had specifically demanded their capture. Meanwhile, Fang Chang took advantage of He Simu’s spirit form being absent to study her physical body, hoping to discover her true identity to gain leverage over her. When He Simu returned to her vessel, she asked her companion, Chengying, if anyone had visited, but he denied it. She then sought out Duan Xu to formally negotiate the terms for the exchange of his five senses.
