Facing the ambush by the North Chong Army, He Simu snapped her fingers, summoning clusters of eerie blue fireballs that targeted the enemy soldiers. Shaken by the bizarre phenomenon, Han Lingqiu deemed the site too haunted to remain and ordered a retreat. He Simu eventually arrived safely at Shuozhou with her young companion, Chen Ying. While Chen Ying marveled at their luck, attributing their survival to ancestral protection, He Simu remained silent about her own intervention.
Meanwhile, Commandant Xia reported the incident to Duan Xu. It was revealed that the General had anticipated a potential attack and had ordered his men to observe from the shadows, ready to intervene. While Han Lingqiu appeared to fight desperately to protect He Simu, Duan Xu’s suspicions about the captain’s true allegiance were not entirely cleared. He noted the strangeness of the blue flames but remained focused on the broader strategic game.
Upon reaching Shuozhou, He Simu’s borrowed mortal vessel began to fail, and she collapsed with a high fever. Duan Xu settled her into the Lin Mansion and summoned a physician. Because He Simu lacked the five senses, she could not actually feel pain; she simply echoed the physician's leading questions, agreeing when he suggested she might feel fatigued or nauseous. Later, Duan Xu personally brought her medicine.
He dropped his pretense, revealing he knew she lacked five senses, while also mentioning that Captain Meng had told him she "liked" him—a claim he used to tease her. The confrontation deepened as He Simu questioned Duan Xu’s own identity. She pointed out that he supposedly never trained in martial arts, yet he easily subdued the seasoned Commandant Wu. She also noted that everyone who knew him during his seven years in Daizhou was dead.
When she recited verses from the "Aphorisms of Cangshen" and mentioned his mysterious use of "red birds," she openly doubted if he was truly the same Duan Xu from before the age of twelve. Realizing they were both "puppets" hiding behind masks, they made a wager on his true identity. In the spirit realm, Yan Ke, the Right Hand of the Void, intercepted the fleeing Shao Yinyin and her protector, Chang.
It was revealed that Yinyin had originally saved Chang when he first manifested as a spirit. However, Yan Ke invoked the Golden-wall Decrees, which forbade spirits from entering the mortal world. He gave Chang a cold ultimatum: return to his position as Vice Lord or perish with Yinyin. Choosing self-preservation, Chang tearfully apologized and struck Yinyin, causing her to vanish into ashes. Yan Ke reminded the grief-stricken Chang that this was his own choice.
Back in the mortal camp, Commandant Wu was furious, feeling he had been played when Duan Xu’s supposed attack on Yuzhou turned out to be a feint to capture Shuozhou. Duan Xu explained that he kept the plan secret because the enemy knew the hot-headed Wu too well. He further revealed that the "red birds" were merely pigeons painted with flame patterns to exploit the Chong people’s superstitious fear.
Despite his anger, Wu agreed to trust the General one last time, vowing to haunt the Duan family if they failed to drive the invaders back. The threat of North Chong reinforcements loomed, led by Awo’erqi. Duan Xu turned to He Simu for advice. She predicted that the current extreme cold would break in ten days. She suggested blowing up the frozen Guanhe River; once the ice was destroyed and the weather warmed, the river would become an impassable barrier.
Though the plan required the Tabai Army to hold Shuozhou at all costs without retreating, Duan Xu accepted the gamble. Before the battle, Han Lingqiu approached Duan Xu, asking if they had met years ago. Han revealed that he had lost his memory following a severe injury that left a scar on his face. Duan Xu claimed he had been in Daizhou at that time and had never seen him.
Later, Yan Ke visited He Simu at the mansion, bringing her a tea-whisking set as a gift. He Simu enjoyed the human custom, but her mortal body soon grew weary. Yan Ke, knowing she needed rest, took his leave. He Simu was eventually jolted awake by the sound of explosions. She discovered that Duan Xu had blown up the Guanhe River a day earlier than planned to intercept a sneak attack from Yuzhou.
Arriving at the site, she stood amidst the devastation as spirit auras rose from the fallen. Duan Xu, sensing a presence he could not see, called out her name. As he walked toward her, he passed directly through her spectral form. In that moment, He Simu’s internal spirit pearl reacted violently, vibrating with light. She remembered her aunt's words about a "curse-breaker"—a person whose life would connect with her five senses. After four hundred years of existing in a void, He Simu realized that the man who could finally make her feel alive had appeared.
