Despite her anger, she noticed a deep scar on his hand, which he explained was from a bandit attack during his journey to the capital—an ordeal from which Duke Pei had rescued him. Political tensions in Nandu soon escalated. While on his way to see Duke Pei, Fang Xianye was ambushed by assassins. Though the attackers did not intend to kill him, he sustained an injury to his arm.
Duke Pei, having anticipated such a move, had stationed secret guards to ensure Fang's safety and personally bandaged the wound at his residence. The Duke learned that Duan Chengzhang was aggressively arranging marriage prospects for Duan Xu, targeting Wang Suyi (daughter of the Minister of Revenue), Lu Changling (daughter of the Imperial Tutor), and Xie Qiuyan (daughter of Prince Xie).
To block these alliances, the Duke ordered Fang Xianye to visit the Fifth Prince, Han Mingxuan, and his mother, Consort Yu, to arrange for the Prince to claim the brides first. The orchestrated attack on Fang Xianye had indeed been a warning from Duan Xu. Duan Xu later visited his secret operative, Luoxian, a woman he had trained to gather intelligence while working as a musician in a pleasure house.
Luoxian reported on the successful intimidation of Fang Xianye and mentioned a mysterious new "Top Beauty" who had recently arrived—a woman who only wished to hear stories of human tragedy and obsession rather than perform. Unknown to Duan Xu, this woman was He Simu, the Sovereign of Spirits, who had come to the mortal realm to collect "obsessions" to forge a powerful artifact.
At the Fifth Prince’s mansion, a brief moment of chaos erupted when a maid found the Prince lying motionless and believed he had died. Consort Yu, ruthless in maintaining her house's status, silenced the frightened servant permanently before demanding her son stop his pranks. Amidst the festivities, He Simu sensed the presence of a wandering spirit, but it vanished.
She and Fengyi concluded that only Song Xingyu, equipped with the Glazed Pagoda, could shield a spirit from the Sovereign's detection. As the banquet progressed, Duan Xu noticed that Wang Suyi was visibly uncomfortable under Consort Yu’s scrutiny. Seeking to help her, he requested the Consort’s permission to take the young lady for a walk in the gardens. Perched on a nearby roof, He Simu watched the pair, accidentally dislodging a tile that caught Duan Xu’s attention.
Though he sensed a familiar aura, he dismissed the idea that He Simu would be there. In the garden, Duan Xu and Wang Suyi found common ground in their shared frustration at being used as pawns. Duan Xu encouraged her, suggesting that the only way to escape such a fate was to stop being a piece on the board and start becoming the player who controls the game. Their conversation was eventually interrupted by the arrival of Fang Xianye, who stepped in to catch Wang Suyi when she nearly stumbled.
