Legend has it that at the edge of the East Sea stands the giant Fusang Tree, the gateway to the Void Spirit World. This realm is where the unresolved obsessions of mortals gather and, after centuries, transform into spirits. He Simu is the current Sovereign of Spirits, the most powerful being to be born in ten generations. Although immortal, she was born without the five senses—unable to perceive color, taste, or even the difference between heat and cold.
An ancient prophecy from the Xingqing Palace once suggested that the master of the Deliverance Sword could become her "Spell Bearer" and return her senses, but after three hundred years of silence, she has long since dismissed the idea. Choosing Liangzhou as a place to observe the human world, He Simu encounters a fatally wounded man named Xue Mutou. Desperate to save his young son, Chenying, the man begs for her help.
He Simu offers a deal: she will save the boy, but in exchange, she will extract the man's deep obsession, which will cost him his life. Though she cannot comprehend why a mortal would trade their existence for a fleeting father-son bond, she accepts the deal. Shortly after, Great Liang’s Tabai Army, led by Commander Duan Xu, enters Liangzhou to reclaim the city after the North Chong forces carried out a brutal massacre.
He Simu is stunned to see the Deliverance Sword—a spiritual blade forged by her aunt, Ji Xi, centuries ago—strapped to Duan Xu’s side. Intrigued, she inhabits a mortal body and poses as a local girl named He Xiaoxiao to investigate the young general. She feigns gratitude for his arrival, kneeling before his horse until her weak mortal shell faints.
Before her spirit departs the body, she asks Duan Xu to look after Chenying, and the general moves the "siblings" into the government office for care. He Simu summons Fengyi, a sorcerer from the mortal realm who respectfully refers to her as "Old Ancestor," and tasks him with investigating Duan Xu. Meanwhile, Duan Xu’s junior sister, Meng Wan, grows suspicious of the girl’s unnatural composure amidst the city's tragedy.
Fearing they might be North Chong spies, Meng Wan tests them by serving Suanxian Buns, a delicacy typical of the North Chong people. When Chenying reacts with disgust to the food, it proves they aren't spies, but Meng Wan remains wary of He Simu’s hidden motives and eventually orders them to leave the mansion. After leaving the office, He Simu accompanies Chenying to bury his father.
To comfort the boy, she uses her magic to turn paper money into a flurry of butterflies, which Chenying believes is merely a clever trick. In the city, they encounter Duan Xu again while he is roaming the streets incognito. He intervenes when he catches soldiers looting the belongings of the dead, enforcing military law to protect the civilians. He Simu takes the opportunity to approach him once more, claiming she and her brother are now homeless.
Unable to turn them away, Duan Xu agrees to find them a place to stay. That evening, He Simu’s prediction of snow comes true as the weather shifts. During a sudden assassination attempt on Duan Xu, he is forced to draw the Deliverance Sword. Watching from the shadows, He Simu confirms that the blade has truly recognized him as its master.
Fengyi later reports that Duan Xu comes from a family of scholars and was a high-ranking official candidate until he was impeached by his rival, Fang Xianye, and exiled to the dangerous borderlands. He Simu finds it peculiar that such a "famed unlucky soul" could wield the legendary sword. More concerning is the fact that her Wanling Lantern becomes unstable and fearful whenever the Deliverance Sword is drawn, even causing her to fall from the sky while she is hidden.
As she ponders the mystery of the general, Chenying wakes from a nightmare and wanders out to find her. In the dark, he encounters a mysterious and unsettling woman who mistakes him for her own lost son.
