During the Eastern Han Dynasty, the Southern Pearls of Hepu were exceedingly precious, worth fortunes, and gambling on pearls was a widespread practice. Li Ling, known as the "Pearl Prince," was ruined by a magistrate who rigged a pearl gambling scheme, forcing him into bankruptcy and reducing him to a manipulated puppet controlled by pearl price-fixers.
