Never Gone Episode 13 Recap
> Never Gone Recap
After rejecting Mr Lin's proposal for lacking innovation, Zhang Yue firmly chose Shen Juan's plan, much to Mr Lin’s displeasure. Zhang Yue praised Shen Juan, affirming her trust in him above others and urging him to strive even harder. Shen Juan, for his part, reaffirmed his commitment to her. Zhang Yue then received a flight booking text message and realized that Cheng Zheng had used her account to book a flight to Shanghai.
She immediately called him, demanding to know why. Cheng Zheng explained he was going to Shanghai for an architectural design competition. He did not want to involve his parents, especially since his father was one of the judges, as he wished to win purely on his own merit without being accused of relying on his father’s influence. He also casually asked Zhang Yue to pick him up upon his return, as he would be bringing back a lot of things.
In his dorm, his roommates expressed envy that he was off to a competition while they had to prepare for final exams. Cheng Zheng, with a smile, playfully reminded them he had advised them to study hard, a suggestion they had ignored. Meanwhile, Su Yunjin rushed home from school after detecting something amiss in her mother's phone call. To her dismay, she learned her mother had suffered a minor stroke and was hospitalized.
Although her mother was now stable thanks to Uncle Ding's care, the treatment had cost 150,000 RMB. Uncle Ding confessed that due to the urgency, he had embezzled a portion of the Hengkai project funds, a serious offense that could lead to jail.
He revealed that the Hengkai project had come shortly after Cheng Zheng’s visit, inferring Cheng Zheng's intervention, especially after learning that Cheng Zheng’s uncle was Hengkai’s chairman, as a company of Hengkai's stature wouldn't typically approach a small team like theirs. Burdened by this, Uncle Ding urgently implored Su Yunjin to speak with Cheng Zheng to intercede with Hengkai, requesting an extension for payment or to prevent an audit.
Su Yunjin, though reluctant to approach Cheng Zheng, assured Uncle Ding that she would find a way to raise the money herself. She asked if her mother knew about the substantial debt, and Uncle Ding confessed he had hidden the true hospital bills and provided her with a fabricated, smaller figure, especially since her mother had already offered her entire savings. Su Yunjin urged him to keep the truth from her mother.
Later, still burdened by the predicament, Su Yunjin decided to call Cheng Zheng. At the airport, Cheng Zheng was busy trying to secure a flight to Shanghai amidst severe delays, eventually having to pay 5,600 RMB for a last-minute business class ticket. Su Yunjin, overhearing the exorbitant cost, felt a wave of inferiority and quietly hung up before she could speak.
Later that evening, while her mother slept in the hospital, Su Yunjin called Mo Yuhua, confiding in her about her mother’s kidney failure and the recent blood transfusion. She revealed that the treatment had cost 150,000 RMB, a sum Uncle Ding had borrowed and needed to repay urgently to avoid dire consequences. She specifically pleaded with Mo Yuhua to keep this secret from Cheng Zheng. Mo Yuhua promised to help in any way she could.
Su Yunjin’s mother recovered well enough to be discharged from the hospital, preferring to recuperate at home. Su Yunjin shared a heartfelt conversation with her mother, who promised to cook her favorite dishes once she returned to school and urged her not to worry. Su Yunjin, in turn, asked her mother to ensure Uncle Ding also got adequate rest. With her mother’s condition stable, Su Yunjin made plans to return to school to continue her fundraising efforts.
Upon returning to school, Su Yunjin immediately sought out Shen Juan to discuss her financial situation. She explained her mother's illness and the urgent need to repay the 150,000 RMB debt. Shen Juan, listening intently, offered his entire savings of 20,000 RMB and promised to help find the rest. He mentioned being particularly busy with work recently.
Su Yunjin then subtly inquired if he knew anyone in Hengkai’s construction department, but Shen Juan clarified that his internship was at a subsidiary company, and he had no contacts at the headquarters or in the construction sector. After their conversation, Shen Juan returned to his office. Zhang Yue approached him, teasingly asking if he was alright after his "girlfriend" had just left. Shen Juan quickly clarified that Su Yunjin was not his girlfriend.
Zhang Yue then, dismissing her comment as a joke, sincerely offered her assistance if he needed anything, emphasizing their shared professional bond. Zhang Yue had also learned that Mr Lin had requested a transfer back to the headquarters, a move Zhang Yue dismissed as a reflection of his own poor work ability rather than any harshness on her part.
The following morning, Cheng Zheng unexpectedly arrived at University Yaodong, confronting Su Yunjin about her urgent but abruptly ended phone call and her subsequent disappearance. He expressed his frustration, mentioning he had taken the earliest flight without sleep, only to be met with her evasiveness. Su Yunjin simply insisted she was fine and had resolved the issue, and stated she was not interested in his competition, then quickly pulled Mo Yuhua away.
Cheng Zheng, bewildered and hurt by her dismissive attitude, complained to Mo Yuhua about Su Yunjin's constant coldness towards him, emphasizing the difficulty of his competition and his efforts to reach the finals. With Cheng Zheng gone, Su Yunjin confessed to Mo Yuhua her deeper reasons. She acknowledged that Cheng Zheng was likely behind Uncle Ding’s Hengkai project, which only compounded her feeling of indebtedness.
She explained her reluctance to seek his help, believing they belonged to different worlds with disparate concerns and life challenges. She feared that further entanglement would only lead to more pain for both of them. Mo Yuhua, understanding her friend's anguish, generously offered her own savings, accumulated from pocket money and hospital work. She also suggested approaching Zhou Ziyi, but Su Yunjin preferred to explore other options first, accepting Mo Yuhua’s money with gratitude.
Mo Yuhua pledged to ask other friends for help and promised they would overcome the difficulty together. Su Yunjin's roommates, having overheard her private phone call with Mo Yuhua about needing money and noticing her sudden return home and absence from her internship, realized she was in trouble. They pooled their savings, presenting her with 8,000 RMB.
Deeply touched, Su Yunjin insisted on writing an IOU, explaining that she didn’t know when she could repay it but would do her best. Her roommates accepted the IOU, reassuring her not to worry about the repayment timeline. Later, Meng Jia also contributed 10,000 RMB, which included some funds from Senior Hu, and although acknowledging it wasn't a large sum for the total needed, urged Su Yunjin to find other significant solutions if the situation was truly urgent.
After gathering all possible funds from her friends and roommates, Su Yunjin found she had accumulated a little over 50,000 RMB, still far short of the required 150,000 RMB. Mo Yuhua, seeing Su Yunjin’s distress, assured her she would diligently research her mother's illness, leveraging her medical background to find comprehensive information and recuperation advice. Desperate to find the remaining funds, Mo Yuhua decided to approach Zhou Ziyi.
She fabricated a story, claiming her own mother was gravely ill and needed 100,000 RMB urgently. Zhou Ziyi, immediately suspicious, initially offered to ask Cheng Zheng for help. However, Mo Yuhua emphatically refused any involvement from Cheng Zheng, which further aroused Zhou Ziyi's suspicion. After some probing, he realized Mo Yuhua was lying and correctly deduced that Su Yunjin was the one in dire need.
Mo Yuhua reluctantly confessed that Su Yunjin's mother had kidney failure and had undergone a blood transfusion, leaving them 100,000 RMB short on hospital bills. Zhou Ziyi initially criticized Su Yunjin for not confiding in them sooner, treating them as outsiders, but Mo Yuhua defended her, explaining Su Yunjin’s fear of burdening her friends. Ultimately, Zhou Ziyi promised to help and instructed Mo Yuhua to tell Su Yunjin not to worry.
