Light Beyond the Reed Recap
Episode 1 Recap
Ye Sibei, an ordinary bank employee, starts her day with the bank's strict morning assembly, where employees recite their pledges. Her life is heavily influenced by her family's demands, particularly her mother's desire for her younger brother, Nianwen, to marry and settle down. One day, Ye Sibei’s mother calls, urgent about Nianwen’s loan application.
The bank requires income verification, and her mother pressures Ye Sibei to ask her manager, Fan Jiancheng, to falsify her income certificate to a higher amount, stressing that the family cannot afford for the deal to fall through, as it concerns Nianwen’s marriage. Ye Sibei reluctantly approaches Mr. Fan, who recruited her. The manager, known for his predatory behavior towards female employees, assures her he will confirm the inflated income figures, harboring ill intentions due to her vulnerable family background.
He also implies that while he is willing to help, Ye Sibei, being married with her own family, should set boundaries on her family's demands. Ye Sibei understands his unspoken meaning but pretends not to, simply wanting to secure the loan for her family. At the office, Ye Sibei diligently works, often taking on tasks from the finance director, Tao Jie, who frequently leaves early to pick up her child.
Zhao Chuchu observes Ye Sibei's tireless work, often doing jobs that aren't hers, and expresses concern, but Ye Sibei, burdened by her own thoughts, dismisses it, believing that more capable individuals simply take on more responsibilities. Her mind is preoccupied with her husband Qin Nan’s intention to divorce her.
A police report on the radio announces a young woman’s disappearance on Shanghe Xinchun Street, describing the victim's attire as a blue top, short skirt, and red high heels, and mentioning a white Jinbei van as the suspect vehicle. This sparks a discussion among colleagues. Tao Jie and Chen Xiaoyang insinuate the victim's attire and late-night presence were provocative, while Zhao Chuchu and Ms. Xia argue that women should be free to dress as they please.
Later, Ye Sibei advises Zhao Chuchu to lengthen her short skirt for safety, fearing she might encounter a pervert. Zhao Chuchu, unfazed, shows Ye Sibei a condom, explaining that online experts suggest carrying it to offer to an assailant, believing it could prevent STDs, reduce harm, and increase survival chances. Ye Sibei recoils, rejecting the idea.
Ye Sibei receives another call from her mother, who joyfully informs her that Nianwen's loan was approved, the house contract signed, and offers Ye Sibei some cured pork for Qin Nan. Ye Sibei remains silent, unable to bring herself to tell her mother about her marital problems. Later, she repeatedly opens her phone to message Qin Nan but hesitates.
She recalls Qin Nan's serious words about her losing herself and the constant escalation of their conflicts, which led to many errors in their lives and his decision to divorce. He had offered her the house and to pay her loan, telling her he would move out that night. When Ye Sibei asked why, he clarified there was no mistress, and when she apologized for her brother's matters, he simply said it was enough.
Ye Sibei refused to divorce, reflecting on how he once beautifully adorned a bare lightbulb with plastic flower petals she thought was ugly, saying it looked beautiful. But the petals were fragile and kept breaking, and though she urged him to replace it, he insisted he could fix it, repairing it day after day while she waited. Eventually, only three petals remained, and he had stopped fixing it long ago.
Qin Nan stated that Ye Sibei had lost herself and that she shouldn't live this way. He concluded by saying he wouldn't return and told her to take care of herself, leaving her with the divorce agreement. Qin Nan felt that Ye Sibei had become completely different and that her relentless efforts to help her brother had utterly ruined their home.
Working late, Ye Sibei overhears Tao Jie tell another colleague that Ye Sibei has no background and borrowed hundreds of thousands of yuan for her family, disclosing that Ye Sibei sought Mr. Fan’s help to inflate her income proof for the loan, specifically asking him not to tell Zhao Chuchu. Tao Jie judges Ye Sibei as "sick in the head" for being unable to refuse people, predicting she'll eventually destroy herself.
Just then, Mr. Fan gathers the remaining employees, including Ye Sibei and Zhao Chuchu, for an urgent dinner with a major client, Mr. Zheng of Wanfu Properties, developer of the Tianlu project. Mr. Fan declares attendance mandatory, threatening termination for anyone who misses it, emphasizing that securing the big deal depends on how much they drink. Meanwhile, Qin Nan, seeing the heavy rain, goes to pick up Ye Sibei.
However, when he sees Ye Sibei leave work, he decides not to call her and leaves directly. At the dinner, Mr. Zheng takes offense when he sees Ye Sibei distracted and checking her phone. Mr. Fan tries to appease him, but Mr. Zheng insists that Ye Sibei is disrespecting him. Zhao Chuchu attempts to intervene and help Ye Sibei, but Mr. Fan pulls her away, leaving Ye Sibei to Mr. Zheng's demands.
Mr. Zheng forces Ye Sibei to drink four large glasses of potent liquor. Her colleagues watch, some concerned like Zhao Chuchu, others merely observers. Feeling overwhelmed and sick, Ye Sibei retreats to the restroom, where she receives a phone call from her mother. Her mother, having discovered the divorce agreement at home, furiously confronts Ye Sibei for concealing such a major event, lambasting her for not considering Nianwen’s future, and outright rejecting the divorce, questioning how Ye Sibei could remarry.
Overcome, Ye Sibei shouts back, asking if her mother thought she "wanted" this life, saying she was forced into it by circumstances. Zhao Chuchu, who followed her to the restroom, comforts her. Ye Sibei, in despair, tells Zhao Chuchu that she hopes she and Nianwen will have a good life, implying her own is beyond repair.
Mr. Fan then finds them and attempts to console Ye Sibei, who, in her drunken state, profusely thanks him for giving her a job when others wouldn't hire a 26-year-old woman without experience, who was planning to marry and potentially have children. She vows not to be a burden and to ensure their efforts aren't wasted. However, Mr. Zheng insists on more drinking, pulling both Ye Sibei and Zhao Chuchu back to the table, forcing them to become heavily intoxicated.
In her stupor, Ye Sibei hallucinates, recalling meeting Qin Nan. This pleasant memory quickly distorts into a horrifying flashback of being violated in a field of rapeseed flowers. She manages to call 110, struggling through her tears and drunkenness to request a jacket and to provide her location.
Episode 2 Recap
Following a sexual assault, Ye Sibei found herself in profound distress and made a call to her mother. The police were subsequently alerted, and Officer Lin Feng from the Guantian Precinct Detective Unit met Ye Sibei's mother at the hospital. Lin Feng explained that they had received Sibei's alarm call at 6 AM, asking for a coat. They had located her hiding in a rapeseed field on the city's outskirts.
Although her personal belongings were found intact, Sibei had not spoken a word since, leading them to bring her to the hospital for examination. Lin Feng gently informed Mrs. Ye that Sibei might have been sexually assaulted, and that they had collected forensic evidence and were awaiting further tests. Lin Feng requested Mrs. Ye's help in comforting Sibei and encouraging her to cooperate if the assault was confirmed.
Mrs. Ye adamantly denied the possibility of an assault, insisting her daughter was a "good, well-behaved girl" and that there must be a misunderstanding. She demanded the police leave, stating she would contact them if needed. She then attempted to forcefully enter Sibei's room, arguing with the doctors and Lin Feng about privacy. Mrs. Ye claimed Sibei had merely argued with her husband, Qin Nan, the previous night, and that any police involvement would ruin Sibei's reputation and marriage.
She threatened to sue the police for defamation if they continued to imply an assault without a formal report. Once inside, Mrs. Ye comforted a silent Sibei, urging her to pretend nothing had happened. She insisted Sibei must tell the police that she had only argued with Qin Nan, emphasizing that public opinion was uncontrollable and that if the truth got out, Sibei's life would be ruined, regardless of whether the assailant was caught.
She warned that people would gossip, saying Sibei was drunk and "fooled around." Despite Sibei's quiet denial, stating it was a company dinner, Mrs. Ye reiterated that gossip could destroy her. She concluded by telling Sibei to trust her, not to call the police, and that they would go home to rest. Unaware of the victim's identity, Ye Nianwen, Sibei's younger brother and a newly graduated lawyer, arrived at the hospital, hoping to find a case and offer legal assistance.
He attempted to engage with Captain Zhang, offering cigarettes and stating his firm handled all types of cases, but Captain Zhang dismissively told him to leave. As Sibei was being taken out of the hospital by her mother, Mrs. Ye, not wanting her son to witness Sibei's distress, forcefully pressed Sibei's head down, and they both squatted on the ground. Lin Feng once again tried to convince Sibei to undergo the remaining medical tests and provide a formal statement.
But Sibei, influenced by her mother, reiterated that she had merely argued with her husband and that the police couldn't assist her. Mrs. Ye quickly interjected, asserting that spousal disputes do not require police statements, and whisked Sibei away, ignoring Lin Feng's repeated calls for Sibei. Lin Feng then spoke with Captain Zhang, expressing her concern about Sibei's distressed state and the preliminary medical findings that pointed to a sexual assault.
She questioned if this case might be linked to a previous one. Captain Zhang, however, curtly dismissed her, advising against jumping to conclusions without the victim's statement and hinting that her workload might be too light, urging her to focus on other pending assignments. Frustrated but undeterred, Lin Feng left to pursue other investigative leads related to the case at the Traffic Police unit. Under her mother's instruction, Sibei called her boss, Mr. Fan, to request leave.
Mr. Fan chastised her for not notifying him earlier but then made a chilling apology, stating that Mr. Zheng was a client and he "couldn't really stop him last night," effectively acknowledging and condoning the assault. Sibei quietly accepted this and confirmed she could not come to work. Later, Sibei's brother, Nianwen, came home. During dinner, Sibei questioned him about his presence at the hospital earlier.
Nianwen explained he was there scouting for potential clients, having followed the police from the station, and after losing them, he deduced a major case, likely a rape, was unfolding in the gynecology ward. He regretted not seeing the victim, as timely intervention was crucial for such cases. Sibei then hesitantly asked if these types of cases were difficult to win. When Nianwen mentioned he hadn't met the victim yet, Sibei secretly breathed a sigh of relief.
Nianwen explained the complexities of proving coercion in sexual assault cases, where perpetrators often resort to discrediting victims with "disgusting accusations" that severely damage their reputation. He concluded that many victims "break down before it even gets to trial," and sometimes it's better to "just pretend nothing ever happened, and just forget about it" to avoid further pain. Hearing this, Sibei's face crumpled in despair, and she silently went to serve dinner.
Meanwhile, Captain Zhang visited Qin Nan's auto repair shop to pick up his car and asked for a personal favor. He showed Qin Nan tire prints from the crime scene, seeking his professional opinion on the tire type or vehicle model, asking him to keep it confidential. Qin Nan, with his extensive knowledge of tires, identified that three tires had been replaced, with only one being an original factory tire, an uncommon type.
He narrowed it down to either a new Ford Taurus or an older Toyota Crown sedan, suggesting the latter given the tire wear. Captain Zhang noted the older Crown model was considered a luxury car in their city. Back at Sibei's home, Nianwen advised his sister to reconcile with Qin Nan, fearing their marital conflict would escalate. Sibei, alone, revisited memories of the company dinner, Mr. Zheng's advances, and the terrifying threat from her assailant.
She also recalled Nianwen's cynical advice about the futility of reporting sexual assault and her mother's desperate pleas to keep silent. These thoughts reinforced her fear and despair. At work, Sibei was cleaning when Mr. Fan approached, questioning her about not wearing her uniform. Sibei vaguely replied she "forgot." She then confronted Mr. Fan, asking if he was the one who drove her home the night of the incident.
He confirmed he drove both her and Zhao Chuchu, but claimed he dropped Sibei off roadside because his wife called him, leading to an argument, and Sibei supposedly told him to do so. Shortly after, Zhao Chuchu called Sibei, who then directly asked Chuchu about that night. Chuchu confirmed that Mr. Fan drove them both, but she got off first, making it clear that Mr. Fan was the last person with Sibei.
This revelation exposed Mr. Fan's lie and further confused Sibei, who could only vaguely remember "blacking out." Later, Sibei's mother (Qin Nan's mother-in-law) visited his shop, bringing food and expressing concern about his long work hours and weight loss. She indirectly probed about his and Sibei's situation, then directly urged them to have children soon so she could help raise them.
Qin Nan remained silent, neither confirming nor denying any marital issues, and was internally conflicted about his and Sibei's situation. At the office, finance director Tao Jie piled extra work onto Sibei, dismissing Sibei's request to leave early by stating young people should work more overtime. Sibei, however, firmly insisted she needed to leave "before dark" and placed the work directly on Tao Jie's desk, marking a subtle but significant assertion of her boundaries. This new determination was born from the trauma and her realization of Fan Jiancheng's deceit, pushing her to seek some form of agency.
Episode 3 Recap
The next morning, Tao Jie confronted Ye Sibei, furious that the work she had assigned to her had not been touched. She publicly scolded Ye Sibei, then dragged her into a warehouse, accusing her of deliberately sabotaging her by agreeing to the task but not completing it. Tao Jie exclaimed, "If you didn't want to do it, you shouldn't have agreed! You agreed to do it for me but you didn't! Who works like you?
How can you still call yourself a human being?" She blamed Ye Sibei for delaying a crucial bank loan, which would impact everyone at the company. " Do you know that these forms are used to apply for loans? They must be submitted to the bank today. When Ms. Tao asks about it and the company can't get the loan approved today, can you take responsibility? You've caused all of us trouble. I'm in a mess because of you too.
Tell me. What will you do today? Anyway, I won't take the blame for this." Tao Jie continued to lash out, speculating that Ye Sibei thought she no longer needed to work because she had been seen drinking with Mr. Fan and, on another occasion, sharing drinks with Mr. Zheng. " Ye Sibei, do you really think you don't need to work anymore because you went drinking with Mr. Fan once?
I was wondering why you weren't in your work clothes today. I was wondering why you had been acting tough today. I heard you had fun drinking with Mr. Zheng a few days ago. You were sharing drinks together. Do you think you've found someone to support you? I'm warning you. As long as you are an employee here, you must work for Fuqiang. Get out and apologize to Ms. Tao immediately. Otherwise, leave the company!
I dare you to find Mr. Zheng to support you." She pressed further, asking if Ye Sibei’s husband knew about these supposed actions, and offered to inform him herself. Driven to her breaking point, Ye Sibei retorted, "Why should I apologize? Because I'm an easy target? Do you think I'm weak?" Ye Sibei also felt that Tao Jie knew the inside story of her sexual assault.
She then slapped Tao Jie, who retaliated by physically assaulting Ye Sibei, shouting, "Ye Sibei, how dare you hit me! How dare you! I'll beat you to death!" Zhao Chuchu arrived, witnessing the commotion, and rushed to intervene. Both women were subsequently taken to the police station.
Zhao Chuchu called Qin Nan, urging him to come to the Guantian Police Station because Ye Sibei had been involved in a fight, and Tao Jie's husband was also present, making her fear they would be at a disadvantage. At the station, Tao Jie's husband demanded compensation and an apology from Ye Sibei. Zhao Chuchu defended Ye Sibei, arguing with the husband. When Qin Nan arrived, looking bewildered, Zhao Chuchu quickly explained the situation.
Ye Sibei, not wanting her husband to be involved, immediately apologized, asking for forgiveness and begging the police not to make her husband pay. Tao Jie's husband stated that Ye Sibei had hit his wife first. A police officer explained the dispute stemmed from Ye Sibei agreeing to work overtime for Tao Jie but not completing the task. Tao Jie's husband insisted Ye Sibei had agreed willingly.
Qin Nan, noticing an injury on Ye Sibei's hand, stopped her from signing the mediation agreement and questioned why she had fought. Qin Nan then fiercely argued with Tao Jie's husband, highlighting that Tao Jie consistently pushed her work onto Ye Sibei and that Ye Sibei was injured. He demanded that Tao Jie's husband apologize for his wife's actions. After more heated exchanges, Tao Jie’s husband eventually apologized.
Qin Nan, refusing to let Ye Sibei be coerced and preventing Tao Jie from being overly aggressive, tore up the mediation agreement, telling her, "Ye Sibei, don't apologize if you didn't do anything wrong in the future." Ye Sibei, mindful of their impending divorce and her mother having approached Qin Nan, told Qin Nan that she would find time to speak clearly with her mother about the situation.
She then informed him, "When you are free, you may come home to get the divorce agreement. I've agreed," before walking away and declining his offer to drive her. Later, Fan Jiancheng offered to drive Ye Sibei back to the company. In the car, he subtly suggested she take a few days off to "cool down," implying it was a disciplinary measure.
Ye Sibei protested, insisting she was not in the wrong and questioning why she should be punished when Tao Jie was equally at fault. Fan Jiancheng stated, "But this isn't a reason for you to hit her." Ye Sibei retorted, "Mr. Fan, I think I didn't do anything wrong in this incident. This has nothing to do with being right or wrong. In that case, why am I being punished?
She gets off work at five in the evening every day and hands her work to me. I've been working overtime every day because of her. I didn't want to work overtime because I had something to do, yet she wouldn't listen. Today, the report was not done in time and she dragged me into a room and scolded me in public. Don't you think that was too much? Shouldn't she be punished? Didn't she hit me as well?
What punishment will she receive? Or are you just punishing me alone? You were the one who hit her first. Yes. I did hit her first. However, you ignored the fact that she asked me to work overtime every day. You ignored the fact that she scolded me. You ignored the fact that she hit me. So why is the company suddenly interfering after I hit her?"
During this conversation, Ye Sibei noticed a familiar waving cat ornament in Fan Jiancheng's car, triggering a terrifying memory from her sexual assault. Realizing Fan Jiancheng was her attacker, she became visibly terrified and immediately asked to get out of the car, claiming she wanted to walk the rest of the way. Fan Jiancheng, sensing her distress, watched her with a chillingly predatory gaze. After composing herself, Ye Sibei went to Fan Jiancheng's office.
He lectured her on the negative impact her fight had on the company's image, stating, "Fuqiang is a legitimate company. If we allow our employees to beat up others without taking action, we'll become a hooligan company." He then reminded her that he hired her because she was a "smart and capable university graduate who was obedient," before telling her to take a break and not return to work for a few days, effectively firing her.
Ye Sibei's expression confirmed she understood the implicit threat. Distraught, Ye Sibei attempted to drown her sorrows in alcohol, but the trauma of her assault continued to haunt her. Meanwhile, Zhao Chuchu met with Qin Nan, informing him that Ye Sibei had been fired and was not doing well. Zhao Chuchu urged Qin Nan to help his wife, emphasizing Ye Sibei’s independent spirit and past struggles.
She recounted Ye Sibei’s history of helping her and Nianwen in high school, working tirelessly through college without family support, and then facing immense pressure and criticism from her parents upon returning to her hometown. Zhao Chuchu then pressed, "Nan, Sibei isn't what she looks like now. She is only at her lowest point in life. She needs someone to support her. Qin Nan. Do you really have no feelings for her at all?
When you hear all these, don't you feel like pitying her and helping her?" Qin Nan initially dismissed Zhao Chuchu's pleas, feeling that he and Ye Sibei had grown distant and that she had "given up on her life." He replied, "I'm done. I've thought it through. Forget about it if that's all you're going to say. Everyone has their own difficulties. I told her countless times to live her life well. However, she gave up on her life first.
Who else can help her?" Zhao Chuchu vehemently disagreed, describing Ye Sibei’s meticulous habits and her sincere desire to make their marriage work, despite her inner turmoil, accusing Qin Nan of not truly understanding her. " What do you mean by giving up on her own life? She would choose every hairband seriously, use different cups for drinking water and tea, and even when she was drunk, she told me she wanted to live her life with you.
No one who is trying to give up on life will do all these things. Qin Nan, have you really tried understanding her? She isn't giving up. She had too much burden and she struggled, but you didn't see that. You thought she didn't handle things well, but if you were in her shoes one day, do you think you'd do better than her?"
Her words resonated with Qin Nan, who recalled Ye Sibei’s inspiring high school speech about resilience and never giving up on a better future. Later that night, the police officer Qin Nan had previously helped arrived at his apartment, asking for his assistance in identifying a car model from a blurry video footage, stressing the urgency of finding evidence for an ongoing case.
As Qin Nan examined the video, he not only recognized the car from the rapeseed field but also heard a snippet of Ye Sibei’s drunken confession to him, expressing her deep desire to live their lives together despite the difficulties. This revelation shattered Qin Nan. He finally understood the full extent of Ye Sibei’s suffering and realized she had been sexually assaulted. Overwhelmed with guilt and rage, Qin Nan immediately confronted Fan Jiancheng at his office.
He demanded to know if Fan Jiancheng was driving the car on April 9th and if he had taken Ye Sibei to the rapeseed field. Fan Jiancheng, unfazed, claimed Ye Sibei was a willing participant, stating she had drunk, willingly entered his car, and confessed her liking for him, all with witnesses. " She did it willingly! She did it willingly! She drank and got in my car. She told me she liked me and said you treated her badly.
Everyone saw and heard it. They can prove it! If she didn't do it willingly, why would she get in my car? Why would she drink so much? Why would she say she liked me? I'm right even if we go to court." Qin Nan challenged him, asking if he believed Ye Sibei wouldn't report him to the police. Fan Jiancheng dismissed the idea, saying it would "look bad for both of us."
Enraged, Qin Nan violently beat Fan Jiancheng, calling him a rapist and vowing to make him "return what you owe her in prison!" As Qin Nan drove away, he was consumed by regret for not having stood by Ye Sibei, leading to her unbearable ordeal. Meanwhile, Nianwen learned from Zhao Chuchu that Qin Nan had assaulted Fan Jiancheng and that Ye Sibei had been fired. Nianwen attempted to contact Fan Jiancheng, hoping to prevent him from filing a police report.
Qin Nan returned home, hesitating at the door before entering. He found Ye Sibei awake, and she was startled to see him. Qin Nan was overcome with guilt, replaying Ye Sibei’s earlier words about their impending divorce and her longing for a life with him despite its difficulties.
Episode 4 Recap
Ye Sibei woke up in a haze and was startled to find Qin Nan in the living room. She hastily gathered torn clothes from the floor, appearing self-conscious and anxious, and asked him why he was back. Qin Nan, noticing her unwell state, gently inquired about what she had endured, hoping she would confide in him. Ye Sibei, however, evaded his questions, claiming recent work stress was causing her discomfort.
Qin Nan directly challenged her, revealing he had seen a video that showed her getting drunk at a company event, being driven home by a colleague, and then sexually assaulted. When asked, Ye Sibei responded by asking if he had come for divorce papers or to finalize the divorce, offering to retrieve them for him. Qin Nan pressed for a reason why she suddenly agreed to the divorce.
She simply stated there was no reason and if he wanted a divorce, so be it. Qin Nan then detailed the events of April 9th, describing how Ye Sibei had a drinking engagement, got drunk, and was driven away in Fan Jiancheng's car after another colleague, Chuchu, had been dropped off. He explained that Ye Sibei was taken to a canola field, and when she woke up, she called the police but then withdrew her report when they arrived.
Qin Nan asked who the perpetrator was, but Ye Sibei replied that it no longer mattered since he knew everything, reiterating that she would not report it. When he asked if it was Fan Jiancheng, she claimed not to remember. She then recounted her version of the night: a boss had insisted she drink at a company dinner. After arguing with her mother about their divorce, she had consumed more alcohol.
Fan Jiancheng offered to drive her home and claimed she had asked to get off the car near her home, but she remembered nothing until she woke up in the canola field and called the police, asking for a coat. Qin Nan urged her to file a police report, assuring her that both the police and he would support her, questioning why she chose to bear the burden alone.
Ye Sibei argued that reporting it would only lead to public blame and scrutiny, likening it to a child getting hit on both cheeks for reporting a fight. She felt it was "not a big deal" and that she "wasn't careful enough." She tearfully apologized to Qin Nan, believing she had wronged him, but he insisted she had done nothing wrong while simply doing her job.
Despite his pleas, she vehemently refused to report it, stating she just wanted the incident to pass and for them to divorce if he wished. Qin Nan warned her that an unaddressed wound would fester, leading to internal decay and a lifetime of questioning. He stated that while people might pity her now, in the future, they would only see her deteriorated life and label her as worthless.
Ye Sibei conceded, saying she felt worthless and had learned from her mother to accept fate. Qin Nan encouraged her to fight, to "win once," but Sibei despaired, saying she had never won, despite years of hard work and belief that a better future awaited her. She felt inadequate and burdened by life's criticisms, only wishing for a simple, peaceful life without conflict. Qin Nan, seeing through her resignation, remarked that a part of her still refused to give up.
He reiterated his desire to go to the police with her so she could live a normal life, adding that he was willing to help her break free from a life of being bullied. Ye Sibei, in turn, felt as if her husband was a lone boat, saving her from drowning. At that moment, Nianwen, Ye Sibei's younger brother, appeared at their doorstep. He explained that Chuchu had informed him about Qin Nan assaulting Fan Jiancheng, prompting his visit.
He overheard their argument and didn't want to interrupt. Ye Sibei, realizing Nianwen was trying to prevent them from reporting the incident, told him to move aside. Nianwen, a lawyer, argued that filing a report now would have a low chance of success and would subject Ye Sibei to public scrutiny, with people questioning her actions and relationship with the perpetrator.
He painted a grim picture of her past being scrutinized and potentially being labeled a "honey trap" or worse, suggesting that if Qin Nan couldn't accept it, he should divorce Ye Sibei, but he wouldn't allow his sister to be ruined. Ye Sibei then confronted him, realizing he had seen her at the hospital that day and deliberately said those things to dissuade her from reporting. Feeling distraught, she asked everyone to leave so she could be alone.
Nianwen, seeing his sister push him and Qin Nan away, fell silent, feeling deeply upset. She also remarked to Qin Nan that he had already gotten into two fights and questioned what they would do after reporting it, asserting that violence solves nothing. Qin Nan, now angered, confronted Nianwen, accusing him and their mother of always being selfish and preventing Ye Sibei from seeking justice.
He revealed Nianwen's past, recalling how their mother paid a hefty school placement fee for Nianwen, sacrificing Ye Sibei's education in the process. He detailed how Ye Sibei worked to put herself through high school and college, while Nianwen consistently relied on the family for financial support, even for his house down payment, which Sibei secretly covered with a 100,000 yuan credit loan.
Nianwen claimed he was unaware of the loan, but Qin Nan countered that he chose to be ignorant, enjoying the benefits of his sister's sacrifices. Qin Nan passionately argued that Nianwen's inaction and the family's constant demands had brought Ye Sibei to her current desperate state, concluding that if Nianwen had acted like a man even once, Ye Sibei's life would not be so dire.
He accused Nianwen of being a hypocritical parasite who, under the guise of protecting Ye Sibei, was merely avoiding trouble for himself and the family. Qin Nan asserted that no one in their family, including himself, had ever truly told Sibei that she was faultless and deserved a good life.
Nianwen, with a heavy heart, admitted that even if he expressed his admiration now, Qin Nan might not believe him, but he genuinely hoped Sibei would always remain the person he admired. Nianwen then departed, reminding them that it was their father's birthday and offering to inform their parents if they couldn't attend. After Nianwen left, Qin Nan repeatedly tried to call Ye Sibei, but her phone was off.
Feeling a growing sense of unease and regret for not supporting his wife more, he rushed home. There, he found Ye Sibei collapsed on the floor and quickly took her to the hospital.
On the way, as Qin Nan urged her to hold on and talk to him, Ye Sibei faintly confessed that she too longed to fight for herself, but every time she mustered the courage, someone from her family would tell her to endure for her own good, making her suffer immensely. She reiterated that she had tried, truly tried, to live.
Qin Nan encouraged her to hold on, reminding her that she was not afraid of death, so she should not fear living. Flashbacks revealed Ye Sibei's difficult past. Despite being an excellent student with aspirations for college, her mother, prioritizing her brother, forced Sibei to drop out to save money, insisting she work at their food stall.
Her mother argued that two children in college were too expensive and that as the eldest, Sibei should sacrifice for her brother, who was the "hope of the family." However, a kind teacher helped Sibei secure a targeted financial aid, allowing her to complete high school and attend university. During her college years, while her brother received money for socializing, Sibei worked various part-time jobs to support herself.
She even borrowed clothes for job interviews, aiming to establish herself in the city. Her mother frequently called, pressuring her to return to Nancheng for a teaching job she had arranged, but Sibei was determined to stay in the city where she believed opportunities were fairer, even if it meant defying her mother. She worked many part-time jobs, and at one point, even fainted from exhaustion.
Ye Sibei’s relentless efforts led to a promising internship at Tengda Company, where she diligently handled many tasks, hoping to secure a permanent position. However, her mother unexpectedly appeared at her workplace. During a crucial meeting, her mother caused a dramatic scene, criticizing the company for exploiting her daughter and for employees' lack of courtesy, and publicly announced Sibei was quitting. Despite Sibei's desperate pleas that she was about to be promoted, her mother's disruption led to her immediate dismissal.
Soon after, Sibei faced another blow when her landlord evicted her because the rental agency had absconded with her rent money. With nowhere else to go, Ye Sibei ended up spending nights in internet cafes, exhausted from her struggles to survive in the big city.
Episode 5 Recap
Ye Sibei slowly awoke in the hospital, finding Qin Nan by her side. She immediately apologized, expressing regret for letting him see her in such a pathetic state. Qin Nan urged her to stop, claiming he was the one who should apologize. He revealed that he had gone to her company that day, but seeing the gates locked and lights off, he assumed she had gone home.
He deeply regretted not calling her, emphasizing that the incident was an unforeseen accident and not her fault. After some thought, Ye Sibei firmly declared her intention to report the crime. Qin Nan affirmed his unwavering support, promising to accompany her to the police station after her discharge. He assured her that she would win and receive justice, promising her a bright future.
He vowed to confront anyone who dared to criticize or bully her, reiterating that she had done nothing wrong and he, as her husband, would always stand by her. Meanwhile, Ye Sibei's family was gathered to celebrate her father's birthday, with Nianwen calling Qin Nan to inquire about their whereabouts. However, the call was interrupted by a hospital announcement requesting Ye Sibei's family.
Nianwen became frantic, learning from Qin Nan that Ye Sibei was in People's Hospital due to alcohol poisoning. The entire family, including Ye Sibei's parents and Zhao Chuchu, rushed to the hospital. Upon arrival, Ye Sibei's father, Mr. Ye, angrily confronted Qin Nan, questioning why he hadn't protected Ye Sibei. Nianwen tried to calm his father.
He then expressed his complex feelings, admitting that while their family's love for Ye Sibei was real, their deeply ingrained societal views also held sway. He confessed that his previous reluctance to support Ye Sibei's decision to report the crime was partly self-serving, but mostly stemmed from a desire to shield her from public judgment, the painful retelling of her experience to the police, and the fear of a failed case.
He questioned whether such an arduous path was truly worth the emotional toll on his sister. Qin Nan responded to Nianwen's doubts, explaining that people pursue justice because it forms the very foundation of a meaningful life. He argued that if Ye Sibei’s world lacked basic justice, she couldn't hope to live well. He pointed out that if perpetrators could act with impunity, and kindness was met with malice, Ye Sibei couldn't accept such a world.
While reporting the crime seemed daunting, it represented her struggle for liberation. In contrast, giving up, though seemingly peaceful, would subject her to lifelong torment. As Qin Nan emphasized the importance of justice, Ye Sibei's mother called Nianwen in a panic, stating that Ye Sibei was missing from her room. The family immediately launched a frantic search, with Qin Nan joining them.
Ye Sibei was eventually found by her family, and she once again declared her intention to go to the police. Her mother vehemently rejected the idea, accusing her of being crazy and urging Qin Nan to call a doctor instead. She pleaded for Ye Sibei to consider the impact on their family, Nianwen's upcoming wedding, and Zhao Chuchu's reputation.
Ye Sibei, visibly distraught, passionately countered, asking why she should suffer in silence when both reporting and hiding the truth would be painful. She confronted her mother about past injustices, recalling how her parents had wanted a son, leading to her being left in the countryside for three years after Nianwen was born. She reminded them of being blamed when her father lost his job, and how her education was sacrificed for Nianwen’s.
She recounted how her parents caused her to lose a good job in another city and constantly demanded money for Nianwen’s house and wedding, never inquiring about her own well-being. She asserted that her desire for justice was not selfish, especially given how little her family had truly done for her. Her mother continued to insist she was stopping her for Ye Sibei's own good, not for their family's reputation.
Finally, Ye Sibei declared that her only reason for living was to send her assailant to jail, stating that since she wasn't afraid of dying, she wouldn't be afraid to live through this. She implored her mother, "If you still think of me as your daughter, let me go." Moved by Ye Sibei's powerful plea, Nianwen bowed to her, expressing deep regret for his past insensitivity. He admitted to passively accepting the benefits from his sister while ignoring her struggles.
He reiterated his understanding that the legal path was difficult but necessary, and pledged to stand by her, regardless of the outcome, emphasizing that she was not at fault. Ye Sibei tearfully thanked him. Qin Nan then comforted Ye Sibei, asking if she was feeling well, to which she replied she had never felt better. With Nianwen and Qin Nan's support, Ye Sibei left for the police station.
Back at the hospital, Ye Sibei's mother, Huang Guifen, chastised Mr. Ye (Ye Ling) for hiding the incident, arguing that his inaction was enabling the rapist. Mr. Ye retorted that she never cared about household matters. Huang Guifen dismissed her husband's concern, calling him naive and warning him that reporting would bring no benefit to Ye Sibei, only more difficulties. She told Ye Ling to brace himself, stating, "This is just the beginning."
At the Criminal Investigation Unit, an officer noted Ye Sibei was still in her hospital gown, to which she explained her urgency, fearing that any delay would make her lose courage. She calmly provided her personal details and, when asked for the specific reason for her visit, stated, "I've been raped." Meanwhile, Nianwen sat anxiously outside, while Qin Nan reassured him of Ye Sibei's incredible bravery.
Inside, the officer questioned Ye Sibei about the night of the incident, asking when she lost consciousness. She recalled it happening after getting into the car with her friend Zhao Chuchu and her superior Fan Jiancheng, both of whom she had trusted. She became emotional as she described losing consciousness due to the alcohol and waking up in the backseat, blindfolded. She then recounted hearing a "ticking mechanical sound" and realizing the assailant was on top of her.
When pressed for specific details, she confirmed it was intercourse, describing the perpetrator as an aging man with rough hands. Overwhelmed by the intrusive questions, she asked for a different officer, feeling that the police were being unsympathetic. The officer explained that such details were crucial for solving the case and proving guilt, emphasizing the importance of honesty for the truth to emerge. He warned her that the path ahead would be painful, with even more difficult questions to face.
A vivid flashback to the assailant's menacing voice — "Pretending, are you? Yell! Or else I'll kill you!" — caused Ye Sibei to finally admit, "I yelled." As Ye Sibei emerged, Captain Zhang, a police officer, saw her with Qin Nan and realized she was Qin Nan's wife. Qin Nan asked Captain Zhang for his help.
Captain Zhang assured them it was his duty, commended Ye Sibei for her courage, and told her to rest at home, promising to notify them of any developments, adding that her previous report's information was still on file. After they left, Captain Zhang reflected that he had made a mistake and needed to report it. Nianwen, still supportive, promised to arrange for his mentor, Meng Xin, a skilled lawyer known for helping victims, to represent Ye Sibei.
Ye Sibei felt a sense of relief, perceiving her future as "just unknown" rather than bleak. Later, Zhao Chuchu visited Ye Sibei, attempting to peel an apple for her but cutting herself. She tearfully apologized for not realizing Ye Sibei was drunk and not sending her home that night. Ye Sibei comforted her, urging her not to blame herself.
When Zhao Chuchu asked for more details about what happened after she left, Ye Sibei simply said she didn't know and asked her not to overthink it. Soon after Zhao Chuchu left, Qin Nan brought Ye Sibei some food. Meanwhile, two officers from the Criminal Investigation Unit arrived at Fuqiang Real Estate, asking for Fan Jiancheng. Upon locating him, one of the officers presented him with a subpoena, instructing him to accompany them for questioning regarding a case.
Episode 6 Recap
When presented with the warrant, Fan Jiancheng initially tried to argue, claiming it must be a mistake and threatening to call Commissioner Wang. The police warned him that non-cooperation would lead to his detention. Fan Jiancheng then agreed to cooperate but requested a few minutes to sign some "very important" documents he had on his desk. The police agreed to wait. While waiting, Captain Zhang observed the panther statue in Fan Jiancheng's office, noting his obvious ambition.
Fan Jiancheng then called in his assistant, Tao Jie, and discreetly signed some papers, adding a secret mark to them, hoping to convey a hidden message without the police noticing. He handed her the important documents he had just signed and instructed her to deal with them immediately. Captain Zhang also noticed Fan Jiancheng's extensive collection of law books, to which Fan Jiancheng proudly declared that law serves as a weapon for protection in business.
Later, two janitors were discussing the trouble at Fuqiang Real Estate, mentioning that the boss had been taken by the police for allegedly assaulting a woman. Ye Sibei's mother overheard this and, feeling ashamed, quickly urged Ye Sibei to return to her hospital room. Despite her mother's distress, Ye Sibei seemed detached and numb.
Qin Nan, who had been there, asked if she was hungry, but Ye Sibei told him her mother had brought food and that he could go to work. He then left for his shop, asking her to call if she needed anything. During his interrogation, Fan Jiancheng expressed disbelief at being questioned, insisting he knew nothing about the rape case on April 9th, and that he had not harmed Ye Sibei in any way.
He claimed the accusation was a mistake and even suggested a confrontation with Ye Sibei. When asked about his relationship with Ye Sibei, he portrayed himself as her benefactor. He described Ye Sibei as a quiet, unsociable person who struggled to find work after returning from the provincial capital, and whose family was not well-off. Out of compassion, he claimed, he personally intervened to hire her when the company was reluctant.
He also stated that despite her working hard, her poor social skills led to issues with colleagues, which he smoothed over. He explained that he created a fake income statement for Ye Sibei out of kindness because her younger brother, Nianwen, needed money to buy a house for his wedding. He told the police that he had initially advised her against it, but she was persistent. He vehemently denied any impropriety between them, mentioning that even her husband suspected something.
He claimed to treat all employees equally, recounting how he protected female employees from excessive drinking at company dinners. He also noted that Ye Sibei had taken unauthorized leave and continued to ask for more time off, which he had reluctantly granted due to her claims of illness. Captain Zhang felt that Fan Jiancheng was slippery and had probably prepared his alibi thoroughly if he was indeed guilty.
He remarked that Fan Jiancheng was like an eel, requiring time to gather solid evidence. Tao Jie, along with all other company employees, was also called in for questioning. She confirmed her presence at the April 9th gathering, which was held to secure a crucial contract with Mr. Zheng of Wanfu Properties. She admitted to drinking a significant amount due to the client's love for alcohol, a common practice in sales.
Tao Jie recounted that Ye Sibei was drunk and speaking emotionally before getting into the car that night. She spoke highly of Fan Jiancheng, stating that he was a kind person who helped employees in need, including signing a high-income proof for Ye Sibei without hesitation. She estimated that Ye Sibei drank over ten glasses that night, noting that Ye Sibei rarely attended such gatherings and was not accustomed to drinking.
Ye Sibei's mother made constant attempts to make her wear sunglasses, which Ye Sibei found humiliating. She resisted, telling her mother she could go home by herself and didn't want her mother to visit her anymore, as it caused her trouble. Her mother was confused by this reaction, but Ye Sibei then left the hospital on her own.
Back home, she lay in bed, overwhelmed by numerous sympathetic messages on her phone, some expressing pity and asking about her future, making her feel numb with pain as the incident was now public knowledge. She confided in Qin Nan, feeling helpless that people were pitying her, and questioned why her future should be defined by this event. Qin Nan, understanding her immense emotional burden, took her to his "secret base" – a rooftop area.
He explained that he took up boxing during a difficult time after high school, performing 200 push-ups daily to build strength and learning boxing online to manage stress. He then began teaching Ye Sibei how to box, encouraging her to release her inner turmoil. She worried about hurting him, but he playfully assured her that if she did, he would treat her to a meal. When she tired quickly, he apologized, remembering she had just been discharged from the hospital.
Ye Sibei, curious about Qin Nan's life, asked if he regretted not finishing high school. Qin Nan, who said he liked movies, novels, and cooking, dismissed the idea, stating he'd rather work and earn money, as he was content with his life. He then teased Ye Sibei for marrying someone like him—a high school dropout who enjoyed drinking and boxing.
Ye Sibei retorted, pointing out his own choice to marry her, an introverted, ordinary woman with no job, a dependent younger brother, Nianwen, and a high dowry demand. Qin Nan then revealed that he was once the top liberal arts student (literary scholar) of his school.
Ye Sibei, acknowledging his intelligence, shared her own story, explaining she couldn’t thrive in the provincial capital due to her specialized major having too many graduates, her mother messing up a job opportunity, and being scammed by a real estate agent. She felt that even though her parents were demanding, her hometown still offered a sense of belonging.
She mused on the bittersweet nature of her family's limited love, which tethered her to a life she felt trapped in, like sinking in a swamp. Qin Nan challenged her sense of helplessness, suggesting they simply get in the car and drive three hours to the provincial capital. On a whim, they set off. Ye Sibei, after being instructed by Qin Nan not to drive below 60km/h on the highway, decided to drive, letting go of her inhibitions.
She ended up taking a wrong exit and drove aimlessly until the car ran out of petrol, leading them to a beach instead of the provincial capital. Qin Nan, waking up by the sea, joked about his inability to fix a car without fuel, unlike a broken one. They decided to walk to a petrol station, with Qin Nan advising her to "fuel herself" mentally. As they walked, Ye Sibei asked Qin Nan about his childhood.
Qin Nan revealed that he had faint memories of his parents, who were migrant workers and rarely home. He and his older brother were "left-behind children," raised by their grandfather. His older brother constantly protected him from bullies, always bearing new injuries. He shared a poignant memory of his mother leaving, promising to return with money. Qin Nan encouraged Ye Sibei to vent her frustrations by screaming at the sea, suggesting she curse if she felt like it.
Following his advice, Ye Sibei unleashed a torrent of angry expletives, feeling a release. Qin Nan then proposed that once they won the lawsuit, they should sell their house in Nancheng and buy a new one by the sea, to escape the troubles of their current life. Meanwhile, Fan Jiancheng, held in custody, grew impatient and noisy, repeatedly asserting his innocence and demanding to be questioned or released, specifically asking for Captain Zhang.
He was silenced by another officer, who told him to wait for Captain Zhang. Soon after, Tao Jie called Ye Sibei and later visited her at home, bringing gifts. She tried to persuade Ye Sibei to drop the lawsuit, subtly threatening her by mentioning the potential harm to Fan Jiancheng, the company's reputation, and how it would negatively affect Ye Sibei’s husband, her daughter Chuchu, and her parents.
Ye Sibei, however, saw through the thinly veiled threats and firmly stated that once a criminal case is filed, she no longer had the power to withdraw it, dismissing Tao Jie’s attempts to influence her. That night, Qin Nan decided to stay with Ye Sibei. To make her comfortable, he opted to sleep on the floor, claiming he preferred hard surfaces.
Ye Sibei, feeling a moment of intimacy, asked Qin Nan if he had been in love or had a crush before they married. He truthfully replied that he hadn't been in a relationship but had always hoped for a particular girl to live a happy life, though he never imagined being with her. Back at the police station, the forensic report arrived, confirming that the skin tissue found under Ye Sibei's fingernails matched Fan Jiancheng's DNA.
With this irrefutable evidence, Captain Zhang and Officer Lin confronted Fan Jiancheng again. Cornered, Fan Jiancheng changed his story, admitting to the sexual encounter but now claiming Ye Sibei initiated it, saying she was unhappy with her husband and wanted to "get some fresh air" with him. He alleged that after they had sex in the rapeseed flower field, Ye Sibei demanded 100,000 yuan, threatening to report him to the police if he didn't pay.
He claimed he refused and drove away, only for her to persist with the demand, threatening not to withdraw the case if he didn't give her the money. When asked why he hadn't mentioned this earlier, he claimed embarrassment due to both having families. Despite the DNA evidence, he maintained his new version of events, insisting he spoke the truth and offering to confront Ye Sibei. Captain Zhang listened to his elaborate lies, clearly deep in thought.
Episode 7 Recap
Lin Feng expressed frustration to Captain Zhang about the ongoing investigation, feeling that waiting was inhumane given the victim's suffering and the suspect's capture. He believed the evidence was insufficient and questioned Captain Zhang's "strategy." Captain Zhang rebuked Lin Feng's impatience, reminding him that prematurely labeling Fan Jiancheng as a criminal was a major taboo for police, as he was merely a suspect until a verdict.
Lin Feng retorted that everyone makes mistakes, pointing out Captain Zhang's own reprimand for showing photos and videos to Qin Nan. Captain Zhang differentiated his situation, explaining he was unaware of Qin Nan's connection to the case and acted in a private capacity. Lin Feng acknowledged his own anxiety and admitted he was wrong.
Captain Zhang then urged Lin Feng to focus on finding new evidence rather than debating existing statements, emphasizing that evidence of drunkenness was weak due to varying factors like mood and environment. Lin Feng argued that testimonies indicated Ye Sibei was not sober that night, which would invalidate Fan Jiancheng's claim of seduction.
Captain Zhang agreed that Zhao Chuchu had mentioned Ye Sibei was upset that night, and consequently instructed Lin Feng to bring Ye Sibei in for another statement to clarify her state of sobriety. During her re-interview, Ye Sibei told the police that she had no private contact with Fan Jiancheng outside of work, only professional interactions.
She expressed gratitude towards him because, after struggling to find employment due to her age, Fan Jiancheng intervened with HR to secure her position at Fuqiang Real Estate. While he claimed it was due to her being a capable college student, she wasn't sure of his true motives. Ye Sibei confirmed she was in dire need of money, having taken a 100,000 yuan credit loan to help her brother buy a house for his wedding.
Fan Jiancheng had provided a falsified employment proof with a higher salary to facilitate this loan, which he did readily, acting friendly within the company. She also confirmed making one call to Fan Jiancheng after the incident to request leave. Regarding her alcohol consumption, she admitted to rarely drinking but recalled consuming about 13 tiny glasses of 53% baijiu on the night of the incident.
She explained that even when drinking that much, she would feel dizzy and excited, wanting to talk, but her consciousness remained clear, with only her walking being a little unsteady. Qin Nan, seeking to help Ye Sibei find work, contacted his childhood friend, Dachun, who worked at a water plant that needed a bookkeeper. Qin Nan informed Ye Sibei about the low-paying position and sent her the details, wishing her luck with the interview.
Dachun introduced Ye Sibei to his director, highlighting her college degree and accounting background at a real estate company. When asked, Ye Sibei specified Fuqiang Real Estate. However, the director quickly grew suspicious upon learning she previously worked at Fuqiang and mentioned the recent rape case there, asking for the victim's name.
Realizing the director's apprehension and feeling unwell, Ye Sibei excused herself and left abruptly, much to Dachun's chagrin, who was then scolded by the director for bringing her without proper vetting. Outside, Dachun expressed his understanding of Ye Sibei's situation and advised her to treat Qin Nan well, emphasizing his kindness. Ye Sibei, agreeing that things were not as rumored, humbly thanked Dachun, who offered further help if needed, though her attempts to explain seemed futile.
At Qin Nan's repair shop, a customer returned claiming a recently patched tire was still faulty. Qin Nan patiently inspected the tire, pointing out that the new puncture was in a different location from the previous repair. Despite the clear evidence, the customer insisted on blaming Qin Nan's shop. Qin Nan, the owner, offered a 20% discount on the new repair and asked them to return later.
He confided that he wanted to hit them but, being in the service industry, he had to control himself. When Ye Sibei arrived at the shop, the same rude customers returned, hurling insults at her, referring to the recent scandal. Qin Nan almost lashed out, but Ye Sibei calmed him down, telling him not to take their words to heart and to cover his ears if it happened again. She expressed her desire to leave town after the lawsuit.
Later, Qin Nan asked about her job interview, and Ye Sibei vaguely replied that she wasn't a good fit. Qin Nan offered her a job at his shop if she couldn't find anything else. While they were eating, Ye Sibei noticed a large collection of books, surprising her, as she hadn't realized Qin Nan was an avid reader.
Qin Nan admitted he worried she might think he was pretending to be cultured by reading in front of her, a college graduate. Dachun chimed in, confirming Qin Nan's intellectual side and remarking that Ye Sibei still had much to learn about her husband. Ms. Tao called Ye Sibei, informing her that Fuqiang Real Estate's leadership wanted to meet and provide an explanation.
Despite Dachun's warning that it was a trap, Ye Sibei decided to go, determined to hear their "explanation." Qin Nan offered to drive her on his motorcycle, an experience he had wanted to share since before their marriage, and she agreed. Before entering, Qin Nan reminded her to turn on her phone's recording feature and encouraged her to speak her mind, offering to go with her. However, Ye Sibei insisted on going alone, trusting herself to handle it.
Inside, Ms. Tao introduced Ye Sibei to Mr. Zhao, a high-ranking executive, and other company leaders. After they sat down, Ms. Tao expressed apologies for the inconvenience and stated that Mr. Zhao greatly valued Ye Sibei, wanting to discuss Fan Jiancheng's case. She then presented Ye Sibei with 200,000 yuan, claiming it was enough to settle her loans and save more, and that the company would help with any other requests. Ye Sibei questioned if it was compensation.
Ms. Tao explained that accepting the money meant she would "explain things clearly" to protect the company's reputation, implying a retraction of her accusations against Fan Jiancheng. She insinuated Ye Sibei was only after money and that Mr. Zhao, out of generosity, wanted to settle the matter peacefully to avoid a lawsuit that could have been brought against Ye Sibei. Ye Sibei scoffed, asking if Fan Jiancheng had claimed she wanted money.
At this point, Zhao Shuhui, Fan Jiancheng's wife, angrily interjected, accusing Ye Sibei of not being satisfied with the money and asking why else she was there. Ye Sibei fiercely retorted that she was there to demand what Fuqiang Real Estate intended to do about "that scumbag Fan Jiancheng." Zhao Shuhui exploded in anger, but Ms. Tao intervened, ushering Zhao Shuhui out and asking Mr. Zhao if she and Ye Sibei could speak privately.
In a private conversation, Ms. Tao tried to manipulate Ye Sibei into accepting the money, framing it as a "shortcut" for a better life. She argued that the company couldn't punish Fan Jiancheng without concrete proof and suggested Ye Sibei retract her claims, implying her current situation would make it impossible to find another job.
Ms. Tao then resorted to emotional blackmail, highlighting the potential harm to Qin Nan's business, Zhao Chuchu's employment, and her family's reputation if she didn't compromise, accusing her of being selfish. Ye Sibei, however, adamantly refused, declaring she couldn't accept such injustice or allow the guilty to live freely while she suffered. She acknowledged the difficulty of her chosen path but insisted someone had to walk it.
She then warned Ms. Tao that if Zhao Chuchu were fired, she would expose all the company's secrets online, including their attempt to silence her, and vowed to pursue justice as long as she lived. Panicked, Ms. Tao tried to snatch Ye Sibei's phone, shouting for others to stop her. Zhao Chuchu subtly helped Ye Sibei escape, who then called out to Qin Nan, waiting outside. They sped off on Qin Nan's motorcycle.
Qin Nan asked what happened, and Ye Sibei angrily replied that she had insulted them because they threatened her. Qin Nan asked where they were going, and Ye Sibei declared they were going to celebrate her "coming of age," explaining that growing up meant learning to face the world in one's own way, a deeper concept than merely reaching legal age, though she was already 28.
Ye Sibei then expressed her confusion, wondering why so many people defended a bad person instead of protecting a good one. Qin Nan explained that motivations varied: some were driven by corporate interests, finding it easier to silence a powerless victim than expose a powerful executive. Others sought self-comfort, preferring to believe in deserved punishment rather than arbitrary suffering, a concept he called "victim-blaming theory." He also cited traditional customs.
He concluded by telling her that despite the opposition, there would always be supporters, and though good people might be overlooked or silenced, she should look for them and not lose heart. Later, Ye Sibei asked Qin Nan why he remained by her side, wondering if his presence was rooted in a sense of good and evil. She then asked if he had dated before their marriage or had ever liked someone.
Qin Nan confessed he hadn't dated but admitted there was someone he had always wished well, though he never expected to be with her. Ye Sibei then speculated that Qin Nan's support was driven by morality or pity, and thanked him for accompanying her thus far. Believing she could now face everything independently—handle the lawsuit, move to the provincial capital, and live alone—she suggested they finalize their divorce upon returning home, not wanting him to be burdened by duty.
Qin Nan, however, responded by asking what if his reasons were not duty. He emphasized that her resilience meant she would have fought for justice even without him, eventually finding her own path to resist and report the crime. He asserted that she alone made her decisions, and that "anyone could be Qin Nan," implying his role was merely a supportive one.
He added that if it were simply duty, she wouldn't need him anymore, prompting her to ask why he was truly there. Qin Nan hesitated to articulate his feelings. Lastly, she asked what good qualities he saw in someone like her. Qin Nan responded affectionately, listing her many virtues: her resilience, stubbornness, defiance, and unwavering spirit.
He recalled small, beautiful details about her: how even when poor, she made paper flowers to light up her home, bought pretty hair clips, thoughtfully matched plates and cups, ironed her clothes meticulously, and always carried and cherished her Dandelion flower. He concluded by assuring her that she possessed numerous good qualities and was truly wonderful.
Episode 8 Recap
Zhao Shuhui remained convinced that her husband, Fan Jiancheng, had been seduced. She urged her brother to do everything in his power to put an end to the matter. Mr. Meng, a highly reputable lawyer hired by Zhao Shuhui's brother, advised Zhao Shuhui to remain calm and avoid any actions during Fan Jiancheng’s extended detention, promising to do his best to secure bail.
Despite this, Zhao Shuhui implored her brother to get Fan Jiancheng out, as their daughter, Wenwen, was distraught. Zhao Shuhui's brother was aware that if Ye Sibei did not withdraw the lawsuit, Fan Jiancheng faced severe punishment. Ye Nianwen, Ye Sibei’s brother and a trainee lawyer, confronted his mentor, Mr. Meng, questioning why he would defend Fan Jiancheng, a rapist who ruined his sister’s life, for money.
Mr. Meng explained his obligation as a professional attorney to represent his client, Zhao Ming (Fan Jiancheng’s brother-in-law and the boss of Fuqiang Real Estate), and to uncover the truth. Unconvinced, Ye Nianwen accused Mr. Meng of prioritizing money over conscience, labeling Fan Jiancheng a "beast." He expressed dismay that his mentor, who had helped so many victims, was now helping a criminal.
Mr. Meng suggested that if he didn't take the case, someone else would, and emphasized the need for a lawyer to remain objective. Ye Nianwen angrily resigned from the law firm, declaring he would become his sister’s legal representative and vowing to see Mr. Meng in court. Zhao Shuhui sought out Ye Sibei, intending to apologize. She shared her personal struggles, revealing she underwent IVF at 28 to have Wenwen, who is her entire world.
Zhao Shuhui tearfully explained that Fan Jiancheng’s imprisonment would ruin Wenwen’s future, as she would be labeled a "rapist's daughter" and face social humiliation, even affecting her future political background checks. She offered Ye Sibei conditions for dropping the lawsuit. Ye Sibei questioned if this was Zhao Shuhui's first time cleaning up Fan Jiancheng's mess, which Zhao Shuhui denied. Ye Sibei expressed frustration that a man's crime had turned into a conflict between two women.
Zhao Shuhui pleaded that she was acting as a mother, but Ye Sibei countered that she too was a human being. Ye Sibei lamented having to endure such suffering for the happiness of Fan Jiancheng's family. Zhao Shuhui insisted they had "paid the price," but Ye Sibei stated her conditions for dropping the lawsuit were impossible for them to meet, and that if the criminal were to be let off easily, he would never repent.
Zhao Shuhui argued that Wenwen was innocent and asked why Ye Sibei had called the police. Ye Sibei retorted that this question should be posed to Fan Jiancheng. Zhao Shuhui knelt, begging Ye Sibei to spare her family and Wenwen, reiterating that they had already "paid the price." Ye Sibei then asked if Zhao Shuhui, as Wenwen's mother, would advise her own daughter to forgive her attacker.
When Zhao Shuhui could not answer, Ye Sibei asserted that she would not, and therefore, could not forgive Fan Jiancheng. Meanwhile, Qin Nan was having dinner with his childhood friends. His friend Dachun mentioned how their grandfather had instructed them to support each other like true brothers. Another friend, Gui, echoed this sentiment, assuring Qin Nan that they would stand by him and Ye Sibei if they faced any difficulties.
Qin Nan later spoke with Ye Sibei, who, despite her past suffering, felt that from that moment on, she was no longer bitter, and her future days would be sweet. The public scrutiny of Ye Sibei's case escalated, resulting in vandals defacing her home with derogatory messages and paint. Qin Nan found the group responsible at night but, realizing they were numerous, decided to take Ye Sibei's advice and involve the police.
An officer, Lin Feng, assured Ye Sibei that they would intervene, especially as the harassment constituted interference with the judicial process. He advised her to report any further incidents or contact him directly. Despite their efforts, the harassers used virtual numbers for threatening messages, making them difficult to trace. Qin Nan's car repair shop also faced unwarranted inspections from market regulators and firefighters, though no issues were found, indicating an organized campaign of harassment.
Concerned for Ye Sibei's well-being, Qin Nan suggested they move to a neighboring town, but Ye Sibei, worried about financial implications, preferred to stay, citing familiarity with their current home. Police officers from the Guantian Precinct Detective Unit visited Zhao Shuhui to inquire about the harassment Ye Sibei and her family were experiencing. Zhao Shuhui feigned ignorance, claiming she knew nothing about her husband’s friends or his company dealings, as she was a stay-at-home mother.
The police warned her that if the threats against Ye Sibei continued, more people, not just Fan Jiancheng, would face arrest. Their daughter, Wenwen, emerged, distraught and protective of her mother, believing the police were there to take her away. Zhao Shuhui comforted her, promising she wouldn't be taken anywhere. Later, Ye Sibei received more harassing messages on her phone. Unable to sleep, she decided to study for the CPA exam, aiming to pass next year.
She told Qin Nan that once she obtained her certification, they could move to the provincial city and open a new shop together. Qin Nan affirmed his support, reassuring her he would be there for her. At Fuqiang Real Estate, Zhao Ming, the company's boss and Fan Jiancheng's brother-in-law, summoned Zhao Chuchu, Ye Nianwen's girlfriend, to his office.
He praised her work ethic and the company's benefits, then explained that the scandal surrounding Fan Jiancheng was severely impacting the company's reputation and jeopardizing major business deals and bonuses. Tao Jie, a colleague, suggested a promotion to Sales Supervisor for Zhao Chuchu if she could resolve the "crisis."
It became clear that Zhao Ming wanted Zhao Chuchu to persuade Ye Sibei to drop the charges in exchange for compensation, leveraging Zhao Chuchu's relationship with Ye Sibei and her career ambitions. Zhao Chuchu, however, refused, stating that neither she nor Ye Nianwen would try to persuade Ye Sibei. When Tao Jie questioned her loyalty to the company, Zhao Chuchu expressed her unwillingness to continue working there.
Despite Tao Jie's attempts to dissuade her, citing the difficulty of finding new jobs and Zhao Chuchu's financial commitments (wedding and loans with Ye Nianwen), Zhao Chuchu publicly rebuked Tao Jie for being a woman who helped villains and called the company "trash." She then resigned and left, gathering her belongings, unconcerned by Tao Jie’s warning that she wouldn't be welcomed back.
Episode 9 Recap
Ye Sibei found out that Zhao Chuchu had resigned and felt deeply remorseful, despite Chuchu’s outward display of nonchalance. During a phone call, Zhao Chuchu clarified that she had long wanted to quit the "garbage company" because it was dangerous and rife with infighting. She seized the opportunity when the company pressured her to convince Sibei to settle the case, which she refused.
Asserting her decision to leave and find a new job since she was getting married soon, Chuchu stated she was ready to move on. Sibei repeatedly apologized, but Chuchu dismissed it, claiming she should be the one to apologize to Sibei for being naive. She urged Sibei to see the lawsuit through to the end, showing their adversaries their determination, before hanging up.
Concerned about Sibei's emotional state and knowing that Zhao Chuchu's resignation due to the case weighed heavily on her, Qin Nan offered to accompany her to the police station. There, Captain Zhang was upset that Sibei had not provided an important recording during her previous visit. Sibei explained that she initially wanted to resolve the matter privately without involving others, but the opponents had gone too far, even forcing Zhao Chuchu to quit.
Captain Zhang commended Sibei for her actions and advised her to continue collecting evidence, reminding her that threatening or bribing witnesses is a criminal offense. He encouraged her not to be afraid and to bring any future evidence to him immediately. Sibei worried her case was a minor issue for the busy police, but Captain Zhang dismissed her concern, emphasizing that the smooth progression of the case was what mattered.
As Sibei and Qin Nan left, Lin Feng remarked to Captain Zhang that it was not easy for the couple to endure such a situation. He then teasingly noted Captain Zhang was distracted by flowers, though Captain Zhang was already focused on accelerating the case for Sibei, wanting to give them an explanation soon. Separately, when the police came to question Zhao Shuhui, she remained uncooperative, feigning ignorance even when asked about her husband's closest friends.
Later, Nianwen was surprised to learn Zhao Chuchu had also resigned. Chuchu explained she couldn't betray Sibei by trying to persuade her to reconcile. Nianwen thought she should have waited to be fired for compensation, but Chuchu joked about his newfound understanding of legal strategy. Nianwen admitted to feeling useless, but Chuchu saw her resignation as a chance for a fresh start, especially since Nianwen had never liked her previous demanding job because of the constant socializing.
Sibei’s father called her, stating that her mother, Zhao Shuhui, had fainted and demanded she come home immediately, but he refused to take her to the hospital, which made Sibei suspicious. Qin Nan accompanied Sibei. Upon their arrival, Sibei heard her father arguing with Nianwen, who was determined to sell his wedding house to fund Sibei’s lawsuit, even if it meant delaying his marriage. He insisted on supporting Sibei to the end.
Their father was furious, accusing Nianwen of disregarding his mother and Zhao Chuchu. Sibei found her mother lying in bed, refusing to eat or drink, immediately suspecting Zhao Shuhui was feigning illness to manipulate her. Zhao Shuhui then brazenly demanded Sibei withdraw the lawsuit, threatening to cause endless trouble otherwise. Sibei also confronted her mother about Nianwen and Chuchu being forced to resign, but Zhao Shuhui dismissed their difficulties, suggesting their incompetence and reliance on "backdoor" connections were to blame.
Her mother tearfully scolded Sibei for being stubborn and selfish since childhood, always arguing with Nianwen and accusing them of favoritism. She bemoaned Sibei's choice to live alone in a big city, where they couldn't help her if trouble arose. She expressed her love for Sibei but questioned why Sibei believed she would harm her, emphasizing that women in their family, like her grandmother and aunt, traditionally married and had children without demanding more.
Sibei confronted her mother about the systemic unfairness she had faced, sacrificing her education for her uncle and caring for her grandmother while all family property went to him. Sibei suggested her mother’s acceptance of this was due to societal pressure, forcing her to accept such a life, and now her mother expected Sibei to follow suit. Sibei acknowledged her mother's love but highlighted its difference from her love for Nianwen, implying an element of jealousy.
Sibei asserted that her mother couldn't accept Sibei living a different life because it would invalidate her own life choices, and that sometimes her mother didn't truly understand what was best for her. Sibei tried to explain that times had changed, and that Nianwen, Zhao Chuchu, and Qin Nan all supported her. Her mother retorted, asking why she was still suffering if times had changed, why she, the victim, wasn't victorious, and why the ordeal was never-ending.
She admitted to favoring Nianwen because he was a boy. Eventually, her mother pleaded with Sibei to consider a settlement, fearing they could not endure the struggle any longer. Suddenly, Qin Nan rushed in, informing Sibei that Officer Lin had called to say someone was inquiring about the case at the police station, and reporters were likely headed to their house. Sibei, Qin Nan, and Nianwen quickly left to avoid the media, while Sibei's parents remained to manage the situation.
Nianwen promptly called the police to report the harassment. Meanwhile, his parents attempted to deter the reporters who had gathered outside their home, mistakenly confronting Sibei’s mother and insisting she was not Ye Sibei. As Sibei and Qin Nan drove away, Qin Nan comforted Sibei, telling her not to check her phone, assuring her that the harassments were attempts to intimidate her because she had made them afraid.
After seeing the constant harassing messages on her phone, Sibei decided to use this time to study for a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam, a decision Qin Nan fully supported. Following the commotion with the reporters, Zhao Shuhui called Sibei, accusing her of being "vile" and leaking information to the media and online. Sibei denied these actions, asserting that Zhao Shuhui’s own wrongdoings were being exposed, and she deserved the consequences.
Sibei also reminded Zhao Shuhui that someone had been splashing paint at her home and harassing her, hinting at Zhao Shuhui's potential involvement. Later that night, Sibei's father urged Zhao Shuhui to talk sense into Nianwen, expressing frustration over Sibei's stubbornness prolonging the conflict, which he felt a settlement could resolve. Nianwen fiercely disagreed, explaining that Sibei's refusal to concede was their only leverage.
He argued that accepting a monetary settlement would brand Sibei with a false accusation, ruining her life. His father asked if Nianwen thought Sibei should never endure any grievances, to which Nianwen replied that this was far beyond a "minor grievance," comparing it to a profound injustice where 'snow flew in June.' He challenged his father to endure such a wrong himself. Their father insisted he had endured much for his children, but now they faced severe financial hardship.
Nianwen again proposed selling the wedding house, which infuriated his father, who questioned if he had consulted Zhao Chuchu. Nianwen then drove Zhao Chuchu home. He confessed that he might have to sell their wedding house, apologizing for his inability to provide a stable life given his family's crisis, and expressing his reluctance for her to suffer with him. Chuchu interrupted, asking if he loved her. She reassured him that the house wasn't important; only he was.
She added that they were young and could earn money together. Touched by her maturity, Nianwen and Chuchu reaffirmed their mutual love. Ye Sibei, wearing a mask due to public scrutiny, later met with Lin Feng. She asked about her chances of winning the case, and Lin Feng explained that he could not give a definitive answer before the court's verdict, though such cases typically conclude within three months.
Sibei thanked him and Captain Zhang for their efforts, informing him that she was studying for the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam. Lin Feng encouraged her to move forward, assuring her that the case was now in their hands, and she no longer needed to dwell on the past. Meanwhile, Nianwen informed Qin Nan that the procuratorate had officially filed charges in Sibei's case.
Separately, Lin Feng expressed to Captain Zhang his confusion and frustration as to why Sibei, as the victim, had to endure such shame and persecution, even needing to hide her identity. He questioned what Sibei had done wrong. Captain Zhang explained that reality is not like an exam with a single correct answer; sometimes, even knowing the right solution, one cannot act accordingly, and that is the true nature of reality.
Zhao Shuhui recalled Mr. Meng's advice to pay close attention to things at home, which led her to discover a USB drive containing astonishing contents. The day before the trial, Mr. Meng conveyed Fan Jiancheng's request to Zhao Shuhui to regularly polish Wenwen's trophies, as they tend to gather dust. That night, Sibei saw Qin Nan lying tired on the bed and felt deeply sorry for him, realizing he wouldn't be suffering if it weren't for her case.
When Qin Nan inquired about her worries, Sibei admitted she was scared about the upcoming trial. Qin Nan reassured her, reminding her of how far they had come and that the widespread online support for them meant Fan Jiancheng should be the one who was scared. Sibei, however, expressed a fear that if the public discovered she wasn't the perfect victim they envisioned, they might also condemn her. Qin Nan urged her not to overthink and encouraged her to eat.
Later, Zhao Shuhui's daughter, Wenwen, cried to her mother, saying she missed her father and that her classmates were calling him a "baddie." Zhao Shuhui hugged her daughter, trying to console her, insisting that her father was framed and innocent, and that the police would soon bring him home. She assured Wenwen that her father was a good person who had never done anything bad.
Episode 10 Recap
As Ye Nainwen was preparing for her trial tomorrow, her mother, Huang Guifen, entered and asked if the trial was tomorrow and if everyone, including Sibei's brother-in-law, would be attending. Nianwen confirmed they would all be there. Huang Guifen then fell into a series of painful flashbacks, recalling her own childbirth.
During labor, her husband and his family eagerly anticipated a grandson, with her husband lamenting that their family line, which had been single-son for two generations, would be broken if she didn't deliver a boy. When a girl, Sibei, was born, her husband expressed disappointment.
The nurse confirmed mother and daughter were healthy, but her husband informed Huang Guifen that his mother wanted to send the baby to the countryside to be raised and suggested Huang Guifen quit her job at the supply cooperative to stay home and try for another son. Huang Guifen eventually named the baby Sibei.
Later, Huang Guifen remembered running a breakfast stall with her husband, complaining about losing her teaching job and how Sibei, who was sent away to live with her maternal grandmother, seemed to have more energy than her husband. She blamed him for insisting Sibei return home, stating he had ruined her life. She also recalled Sibei as a child, showing off her first-place school certificates while Nianwen struggled with his grades.
Huang Guifen would often scold Sibei, telling her to do chores instead of arguing with her brother and accusing her of only acting tough at home. In another memory, a teenage Sibei pleaded with Huang Guifen not to make her drop out of school, arguing her grades were far superior to Nianwen's, for whom they had paid a high school placement fee.
Huang Guifen dismissed her, saying Sibei was lucky to have studied this far and that her arguing was ruining her mother's life. Sibei confronted her mother, saying she only cared about her son and that her thinking was outdated, urging her to stop interfering. On the day of the trial, Sibei opened the door to find her brother, Nianwen, and her parents waiting, with Huang Guifen stating they must all go together as a family.
Outside the court, a crowd of reporters attempted to film and question Sibei, but security intervened, explaining it was a private hearing. Suddenly, Zhao Shuhui appeared, splashing water on Sibei and loudly playing an audio recording through a megaphone, shouting, "Ye Sibei, you wicked woman! You homewrecker! You destroyed someone's family! You're absolutely heartless! Listen, everyone! Does this sound like rape to you?" Sibei was visibly distraught and panicked.
Qin Nan quickly offered her a change of clothes and tried to reassure her. Nianwen attempted to calm Sibei, explaining that the audio couldn't be posted online without legal repercussions. Overwhelmed, Sibei tried to run away, wanting to go home, but Nianwen and Qin Nan stopped her, urging her to calm down and assuring her they were there.
In that moment, Huang Guifen slapped Sibei, fiercely blaming her for insisting on calling the police and for causing their family so much shame, declaring that no one was going back and Sibei had to see it through, even if she had to crawl. Qin Nan then spoke to Sibei, emphasizing that the news was already out, and if they backed down now, they would never clear their names.
He reminded her that she had done nothing wrong, that the other person was guilty, and that justice meant punishing the wrongdoer and making him apologize. He assured her that no audio, video, or photo could hide the truth. Sibei and Nianwen were then called to speak with a court official. The official informed them that the prosecution had requested a postponement of the hearing because the defendant's lawyer had submitted new evidence that required verification.
Nianwen comforted Sibei, explaining it was a normal legal process. Outside, Nianwen relayed the news to his parents, and Sibei's father suggested Sibei go home to rest. Huang Guifen embraced Sibei, who silently shed tears. Back home, Nianwen explained to his parents that such audio evidence could easily be manipulated through editing or other technical means, and the court would not blindly accept it, requiring forensic verification.
He added that even if the recording were genuine, a victim complying to protect their life in such a situation was understandable, and urged their family not to lose composure before the judicial findings were released. Both Huang Guifen and Sibei's father agreed with Nianwen. Later, Qin Nan suggested Sibei take a shower. He asked her how she felt hearing the recording, but Sibei said she didn't feel much.
She then tearfully questioned if he would still believe her, not mind what happened, and truly love her. Qin Nan responded that sometimes sex represented humiliation, but more often it represented love, and declared his love for her. Sibei explained that she had been terrified, unable to see, and her mind was in chaos. She only thought of surviving, so she had to do whatever her assailant told her to do.
She then asked Qin Nan if it would have been better if she hadn't called the police and just taken the money. Qin Nan replied that if she hadn't called the police, they wouldn't have offered money. He shared a childhood memory of his timid father being beaten while trying to confront bullies who had hurt Qin Nan and his brother. His father had told him to close his eyes, not to watch.
Qin Nan confessed that this memory haunted him, and he still felt like that helpless child. He stressed to Sibei that calling the police was the only way to cut through the chaos; not reporting it would slowly consume her life. He insisted she had to win, or she would be trapped in that moment of shame forever, like him. He firmly declared that they would win.
Meanwhile, Zhao Shuhui, speaking with her lawyer, Mr. Meng, and her husband, discussed the case. Mr. Meng noted that although a postponement was granted and new evidence was being reviewed, the case had already attracted significant attention. He warned that even if they won in court, the media attention would likely result in both sides suffering damage, urging them to minimize losses. He then mentioned that there was still a key witness, Chuchu.
Zhao Shuhui considered that if she could persuade Chuchu to testify, they would have a good chance of winning. Zhao Chuchu, on the other hand, was facing professional repercussions. While trying to secure a client, Ms. Liu, she found a colleague, Sun Wei, had taken the client by order of their manager.
When Chuchu confronted Sun Wei, the colleague coldly told her that all the clients knew what she did – referring to Chuchu leaving her "drunk sister-in-law" (Sibei) in the car, and that no one would trust her with a deal after such irresponsibility. Heartbroken, Chuchu returned home, only to find negative online comments about her, labeling her an accomplice in the Nancheng assault case. She refused her father's offer of dinner, retreating into herself.
Qin Nan spent time with Sibei, cutting out paper shapes, and suggested that after the lawsuit, they should both quit smoking and drinking, and start exercising to live longer. He expressed a desire to see what the world would become after all their efforts. On the day the trial was set to open, reporters gathered outside the courthouse, eager for details, but were turned away as it was a closed hearing.
Nianwen walked with his mentor, also named Lawyer Meng, who offered to treat Nianwen's family to a meal after the trial as an apology. Nianwen humbly replied that he might be the one apologizing and treating Lawyer Meng. Inside the court building, Nianwen reassured Sibei not to be afraid. He instructed their parents and Qin Nan to wait in the family reception area, while Sibei and Chuchu would be called to testify from a waiting area outside the courtroom.
Qin Nan gave Sibei one last encouraging look, promising they would win and that they would wait for her. Sibei and Chuchu were led away by bailiffs. As they walked, Sibei thanked Chuchu, expressing that after today, everything would be over, and they would both find release. Chuchu looked at Sibei, seemingly with something to say, but remained silent as the bailiffs separated them into different waiting areas.
Episode 11 Recap
Fan Jiancheng arrived at the Nancheng People's Court, visibly anxious for his trial. Ye Sibei's brother, Nianwen, reassured his sister not to worry. Ye Sibei, in turn, expressed her conviction, stating to Nianwen that "This trial affects not only my life, but also Qin Nan's. He might spend his whole life trapped in that lonely youth, questioning the laws of this world. Only if we win this case can he find the answer he seeks."
Nianwen urged her to trust the prosecution. Qin Nan, also present, asked Captain Zhang if their case would succeed. Captain Zhang explained that cases only reach the court if the procuratorate believes the defendant is guilty. If the court rules not guilty, then all their efforts "did all that for nothing." Qin Nan pressed for a guarantee of victory, to which Captain Zhang replied, "Keep going," and promised, "You won't be disappointed. That's all I can say."
Qin Nan silently acknowledged the immense difficulty of persistence and the heavy burden Ye Sibei had already carried. Before the trial officially began, Zhao Shuhui caused a commotion by splashing water on Ye Sibei and amplifying a clipped audio recording from a USB drive for the public to hear. Ye Sibei, hearing the audio, became distraught and disoriented.
Her mother, Huang Guifen, seeing her daughter's panic, slapped her, reprimanding her for persisting with the police report against her mother's advice, which had now brought shame upon the family. Despite her mother's harsh words, Qin Nan offered unwavering encouragement to Ye Sibei, urging her to persevere and ensure the perpetrator received their just punishment. In court, Fan Jiancheng testified about the night of April 9.
He recalled Mr. Zheng of Wanfu Properties calling him for a cooperation discussion, and because Mr. Zheng "loves a lively crowd," Fan Jiancheng invited his employees to join them. During the dinner, Mr. Zheng felt offended by Ye Sibei, stating, "Your employee is disrespectful to me." Fan Jiancheng tried to explain that Ye Sibei was new and not accustomed to drinking. Ye Sibei later asked him to drive her home.
However, as they neared her house, she changed her mind, expressing distress about her husband wanting a divorce and asking to be taken to a canola field. Fan Jiancheng drove her there, where he claimed she hugged him, declared her affection, and produced a condom from her bag. He admitted to losing control and having sexual intercourse with her. Fan Jiancheng stated he filmed the act on his phone, and Ye Sibei "didn't object."
After the incident, he became scared due to their respective families and told her it was "just this once, never again." However, he claimed she demanded "100,000 yuan, or else she'd tell people what happened." Feeling "furious" and believing she was "scamming" him, he drove away, leaving her in the field. The next day, Ye Sibei called him, informing him she had reported to the police but suggested "there was still room for maneuver" if he reconsidered.
Fan Jiancheng, believing he had committed no crime, refused. When questioned why he hadn't submitted the photos and video earlier, he responded, "Unless it's unavoidable, who'd show something like that publicly?" He also stated he didn't record subsequent threats because "I'm a man, after all," acknowledging some personal responsibility but not wanting to sue her. Qin Nan reflected on his initial disappointment with Ye Sibei for being "too weak" to report the assault.
He realized, after hearing her in a video, the unknown hardships she faced, and his own ignorance in telling her to be stronger without understanding her plight. He acknowledged that even knowing the difficulties ahead, Ye Sibei courageously reported the crime. Detective Lin Feng, a witness, described Ye Sibei as a quiet employee whose husband usually picked her up.
Lin Feng recounted overhearing that Ye Sibei's husband was angry and considering divorce because she had secretly lent money to her younger brother, Nianwen, for a house. Lin Feng also recalled accidentally knocking over Ye Sibei's bag, revealing a condom inside, which made her feel embarrassed. An employee present at the dinner testified that while Fan Jiancheng initially tried to help Ye Sibei, Mr. Zheng's attitude was "strong" in forcing drinks.
Mr. Zheng then asserted his drinking style and claimed Ye Sibei "cunningly tried to dodge the drinks," which he saw as disrespect. He estimated she drank "about ten" glasses. Lin Feng then detailed the 911 call at 5:49 AM on April 10, where Ye Sibei reported being "trapped in a field" and needing "a coat."
Lin Feng, the first officer to arrive, found Ye Sibei "pale-faced, shaking all over, unable to speak clearly," prompting her to alert forensics and take Ye Sibei for a medical examination. Lin Feng confirmed Ye Sibei's initial request was for a coat, not a direct report of rape. She identified the purple condom presented in court as similar to the one she had accidentally seen in Ye Sibei's bag.
Lin Feng also corroborated Ye Sibei's request for Fan Jiancheng, the only sober person, to drive her and Chuchu home safely. She explained that a blood test wasn't initially performed as the extent of the assault wasn't clear until Ye Sibei explicitly requested a DNA test, confirming sexual assault. When asked by Mr. Meng if she had pre-judged Fan Jiancheng as guilty, Lin Feng affirmed, "Yes," adding, "Because I couldn't lie to my conscience."
Captain Zhang shared an anecdote with Qin Nan about a serial rapist who operated for years with "almost zero cost" because no victims dared to resist or report. He emphasized that "You can't expect a bad man to suddenly repent one day. . . Such people will only sharpen that knife if not stopped."
He cited a recent online case of a missing girl who, once found, "said nothing," "didn't dare to speak or report it," and whose case "just faded away." Captain Zhang praised Ye Sibei's "truly brave" act of reporting and persisting, calling it "the greatest warning to those hiding in the dark. . . thinking they never have to pay a price." He reassured Qin Nan that their efforts "truly isn't meaningless."
Ye Sibei took the stand, identifying herself as a 28-year-old accountant. She described Fan Jiancheng's unexpected return to the office that night, ordering everyone to a dinner party. After the dinner, he drove her home. She recounted being "blindfolded" and abandoned from the car by him. She stated he commanded her to "walk forward, counting to 1,000," threatening to kill her if she looked back. Terrified, she complied.
After counting and removing the blindfold, she found herself alone in a canola field. During cross-examination, Mr. Meng questioned why, as a "well-behaved" girl aware of the dangers of drinking at night, she still went. Ye Sibei countered by asking if he implied a girl drinking at night was "guilty." She explained she felt immense "pressure" at the dinner, with everyone watching, and feared losing the business deal, thus jeopardizing everyone's efforts.
She also felt safe surrounded by "many colleagues I trusted." She explained her initial denial of assault to the police was because her mother advised "not reporting it would hurt me less." She called Fan Jiancheng later to "ask for leave" as he was her superior. She denied habitually carrying condoms and stated that her colleague, Chuchu, had put one in her bag, suggesting it could "increase survival odds" if attacked.
She emphatically denied giving the condom to Fan Jiancheng, saying, "When I woke up, it was already happening." She asserted she "never" saw his face, as she was "blindfolded the whole time." Mr. Meng then presented a photograph showing Ye Sibei with her eyes open, looking at the camera. Ye Sibei reacted with shock and distress, exclaiming, "Impossible. This can't be. That's not me. . . There's no way it's me!" She stated she didn't remember being unblindfolded or photographed.
Mr. Meng pressed, claiming she was "conscious" and looking at the camera. She denied being hit by Fan Jiancheng, but claimed she "resisted," "scratched him," and "cried for help." When asked if she screamed, she confirmed, "Yes, he forced me to scream! He said he'd kill me if I didn't!" Mr. Meng then inquired if she "enjoyed it," a question the presiding judge deemed irrelevant and disallowed.
Mr. Meng concluded his questioning by scrutinizing Ye Sibei's financial situation: a monthly salary of 3,500 yuan, a 100,000 yuan credit loan for her brother's house, a monthly repayment of 2,400 yuan, leaving only 1,100 yuan for living expenses, and an outstanding mortgage on her own home. He questioned if she truly considered her future with her husband or if she had "another plan."
As Ye Sibei concluded her testimony and the judge asked her to leave, she looked around in disbelief, gazing helplessly, even at her brother Nianwen. Chuchu was called as a witness, introducing herself as a sales employee at Fuqiang Real Estate. She described the night, confirming she got off the car before Ye Sibei and told her to call once she arrived home safely. Mr. Meng confirmed Chuchu's engagement to Nianwen, Ye Sibei's brother.
Chuchu stated she was not drunk, but Ye Sibei was. However, she clarified that while Ye Sibei was "rambling non-stop," she could still "recognize people" and "make phone calls clearly," leading Chuchu to feel safe leaving her in the car. This contradicted Chuchu's earlier statement that Ye Sibei was "semi-conscious." Chuchu denied Ye Sibei's drunkenness worsened, explaining that after vomiting, Ye Sibei "was more clear-headed" and tended to say "things she never said before" when drunk.
Chuchu estimated Ye Sibei usually drank "about two liang" (approx. 100ml) and had "less than two liang" on the night of the incident, stating she didn't know if that amount would cause loss of consciousness. Mr. Meng then asked if Chuchu had given Ye Sibei the condom and advised her about increasing survival odds during an attack. Chuchu flatly denied this, stating, "No. I never gave it to her, nor did I say anything like that."
Nianwen interjected, urging Chuchu to "tell the truth," but was quickly silenced by the judge. The prosecutor later questioned Chuchu about the discrepancy in her testimonies, asking why she changed her account from Ye Sibei being "dazed" to being able to "recognize people and make phone calls clearly." Chuchu explained, "I thought it meant she was dazed if she kept talking," clarifying that Ye Sibei had talked extensively about "her family and how upset she felt."
During the final arguments, Mr. Meng, the defense attorney, used the photo of scratches on Fan Jiancheng's body to suggest an "intimate posture" and "voluntary cooperation" by Ye Sibei, challenging her claim of not seeing the defendant's face. The prosecutor countered that the presence of "deep and messy" scratches, even after a time gap, proved a "desperate struggle" and that any claim of "sexual pleasure" was "pure speculation."
He argued that a single photograph, a mere "captured expression," was insufficient and unreliable evidence, especially given Ye Sibei's lack of "instinctive shame" or "reaction to avoid the flash," which he argued indicated she "had already lost consciousness." Mr. Meng maintained that Ye Sibei's alcohol tolerance and Chuchu's updated testimony that Ye Sibei was conscious when they parted contradicted the unconsciousness claim.
He also highlighted the contradictory statements regarding the condom and Ye Sibei's omission of it in her testimony, suggesting inconsistencies in her account. The prosecutor reiterated that Ye Sibei's unconsciousness was a "fact," supported by previously submitted evidence, including hotel surveillance footage showing her being "helped into the car" and unable to walk, clearly indicating she was "drunk and dazed."
He also pointed to a recording where Fan Jiancheng both accused Ye Sibei of extortion and offered a bribe through his company to change her statement, arguing this proved Fan Jiancheng's guilt and attempt to cover up his crime. Mr. Meng, in turn, suggested that Ye Sibei's act of recording Fan Jiancheng indicated "strong legal awareness," implying she intended to "threaten the accused."
The prosecutor defended Ye Sibei's recording as a "legal right," not extortion, and reiterated that alcohol tolerance alone was not the sole standard for judging awareness. Mr. Meng concluded by re-emphasizing Chuchu's latest testimony and the contradictions regarding the condom. Nianwen, acting as the litigation agent, delivered an impassioned closing statement.
He described his sister, Ye Sibei, as a cautious woman who "lived her life with great caution," "never dared to bare her arms," and "never wore bright, bold colors" in her makeup. He emphasized her modesty, explaining that she wore "company uniform" and "a coat" even in summer. He clarified that her initial request to the police for a coat was "her way of asking for help" because "that coat was a kind of sexual protection for her."
He admitted that he and their mother initially tried to dissuade her from reporting due to the "secondary harm" such cases inflict. However, Nianwen stressed that his sister's decision to report again was "not for money, nor to extort anyone," but because "She just wanted justice." He concluded by asserting, "As a victim and a woman, facing something like this and choosing to report it already takes great courage. I believe justice shouldn't erase her courage. She deserves justice." The court debate then concluded, with the presiding judge announcing that the panel would deliberate and deliver a verdict after thorough discussion. The court was adjourned.
Episode 12 Recap
Captain Zhang asks Qin Nan about his plans after the case concludes. Qin Nan explains that it would be like a rebirth, and he would consider staying in Nancheng or moving to another city, primarily depending on where Sibei wishes to live. Captain Zhang, intrigued, then asks Qin Nan if he would be as accepting of Sibei's ordeal if he had married someone else, noting that many similar cases end in divorce even if the lawsuit is won.
Qin Nan firmly states that would not happen to them. Captain Zhang points out they met through matchmaking and have only been married for about a year, questioning if they knew each other beforehand. Qin Nan denies this, clarifying he attended No. 7 High School, while Sibei attended No. 2, making it unlikely they crossed paths. Nianwen later finds Qin Nan and Captain Zhang to deliver devastating news: Chuchu changed her testimony.
She now claims she did not give Sibei the condom, implying Sibei brought it herself. This significantly weakens Sibei's case. The court subsequently announces its judgment, stating that the evidence against Fan Jiancheng is insufficient, and he is found not guilty of rape. Qin Nan and Sibei's family are left distraught and unable to accept this outcome.
Outside the courthouse, Fan Jiancheng joyfully declares his innocence to the media, thanking the law, the court, and his wife, Zhao Shuhui, for her unwavering support. He acknowledges some personal imperfections and hopes his case serves as an example for others. Zhao Shuhui, however, shows no happiness and consciously avoids her husband's attempts at closeness. Enraged, Huang Guifang charges into the crowd, striking Fan Jiancheng and calling him a scumbag. Nianwen joins the commotion.
As the situation descends into chaos and Sibei's family is outnumbered by Fan Jiancheng's supporters, Sibei herself pushes through the crowd to defend her loved ones. The court's decision leaves many in agony, while others celebrate. Sibei becomes utterly despondent, and Chuchu, overcome with guilt, avoids facing Sibei and Nianwen. Meanwhile, at home, Fan Jiancheng dotes on his daughter, Wenwen, celebrating his freedom and denying any wrongdoing. Zhao Shuhui watches, suppressing her disgust and pretending normalcy for their daughter's sake.
Captain Zhang's colleague advises him not to get too emotionally invested in a case, but Captain Zhang maintains that as a human, he is guided by his conscience. He seeks out Judge Gao to discuss the verdict. Judge Gao expresses sympathy for Sibei's immense courage but explains that judges are bound to deliver verdicts based strictly on evidence and facts.
He shares a cautionary tale from 1999 where an innocent man was wrongly imprisoned for 12 years, only to be exonerated later, emphasizing the profound suffering caused by miscarriages of justice. Judge Gao stresses the need for more thorough evidence and a diligent search for the truth. Moved by this conversation, Captain Zhang resolves to continue investigating, declaring, "This case isn't over." After Wenwen is put to bed, Fan Jiancheng tries to approach Zhao Shuhui, but she rebuffs him.
She confronts him, angered that he put "something so dirty" in their daughter's trophy, and reminds him that his freedom is entirely due to her efforts. Fan Jiancheng, in a show of remorse, repeatedly apologizes, hitting himself and promising to give her and Wenwen everything. Zhao Shuhui coldly tells him she only allowed him back to be a father to their child and that from now on, he is "on his own," implying their marriage is merely a facade.
Fan Jiancheng then asks about the USB drive, but Zhao Shuhui curtly informs him he will "never know where the USB drive is," shattering his hopes of retrieving it. Zhao Chuchu appears in a televised interview, where reporters deliberately question her about Sibei's state of mind on the night of the incident. Chuchu claims both she and Sibei were tipsy but "pretty much sane" when she left Sibei in the car.
She adds that she only went to sleep after Sibei sent a message confirming her safe arrival home. The reporter then questions Chuchu about rumors that Sibei took a loan to buy a house for Chuchu and Nianwen. Chuchu denies prior knowledge of Sibei's contribution, stating that she believed the down payment came from Nianwen's parents. She asserts that if she had known, she would have rejected the offer.
She concludes by saying the house was sold due to the lawsuit, and she now has "nothing to do with his family," implying her relationship with Nianwen is over. Meanwhile, Qin Nan relays Chuchu's testimony to Sibei: that Sibei was conscious and able to communicate when Chuchu left, and that Chuchu only slept after Sibei confirmed her safety. Crucially, Chuchu also testified that she did not give Sibei the condom.
Nianwen, watching Chuchu's interview and reminiscing about their shared past, is consumed by anger. Nianwen confronts Chuchu, accusing her of lying. Chuchu suggests they talk at home. With Sibei and Qin Nan present, Chuchu explains that her testimony was truthful except for the part about the condom. She describes how Fan Jiancheng encouraged her to avoid Zheng Qiang's incessant drinking by attending to Sibei, which led her to trust him.
Chuchu maintains that Sibei, though emotional, was mostly lucid after vomiting, and they continued chatting in the car. She claims she reminded Sibei to call her upon arriving home and received a text confirmation before she fell asleep.
However, when Sibei checks her phone, the message content shown by Chuchu differs from what Sibei received, leading Nianwen to conclude that Fan Jiancheng likely used Sibei's phone to send a fabricated "I'm home" message and deleted call records after Sibei had already become unconscious. Nianwen angrily presses Chuchu about why she lied regarding the condom. Chuchu tearfully reveals her profound internal turmoil, describing nightmares where she is tormented and accused.
She questions her past decisions, lamenting her choices to work in sales, attend social gatherings, and not ensure Sibei's safe return. Chuchu confesses her lack of courage to be "good" in a world she perceives as too difficult, admitting her selfishness and fearing the public's judgment if it were known she provided the condom. She apologizes profusely, overwhelmed by the weight of potential public backlash. Although Nianwen attempts to continue questioning her, Sibei intervenes.
Sibei realizes she has been too focused on her own quest for justice and has overlooked Chuchu's desperate situation. Understanding Chuchu's fears as a fellow woman, Sibei tells Nianwen to "leave it at here" and not pursue the matter further. Chuchu then kneels before Sibei, begging her to take all her money and move far away to start a new life, offering heartfelt apologies.
Sibei, though unable to fully forgive Chuchu, acknowledges that Chuchu is not inherently a bad person and accepts her decision to let the matter rest, urging Chuchu to take care of herself. Still reeling from the verdict, Nianwen expresses his conviction that Chuchu's lies unduly influenced the judges' decision, making him believe that Fan Jiancheng is still the culprit and the case should not have ended this way.
Sibei, however, apologizes to Nianwen for inadvertently complicating his life and declares she has no more energy to pursue further appeals. Sibei later confirms to Qin Nan that she will not appeal, stating she has "received a lot" from the experience and knows she is not alone. She urges them both to look forward. Qin Nan pledges his unwavering support, promising to move forward with her.
He cares for a weary Sibei, offering her chicken soup and suggesting they seek specialized medical attention at a city hospital, but Sibei insists she merely needs more rest. Later, at his workshop, Qin Nan's brother questions his continued devotion to Sibei, recalling their prior discussions about divorce. Qin Nan steadfastly affirms his deep understanding and trust in Sibei, stating he knows her "more than anyone else does," and vows to protect her from any malicious gossip.
Moments later, Qin Nan receives an urgent phone call from his mother, who insists he come over immediately as she has something important to discuss. Qin Nan promptly leaves, entrusting the workshop to his brother.
Episode 13 Recap
Huang Guifen expressed her deep worry to Qin Nan about her son, Nianwen, who had been secluded in his room, determined to seek justice for his sister, Ye Sibei. Qin Nan immediately offered to speak with Nianwen. Guifen then inquired about Ye Sibei's condition and, upon hearing that Sibei was struggling to eat and sleep, decided to go to the market to buy apples to steam for her, a comfort food from Sibei’s childhood.
At the market, Guifen overheard Li Mingyu, a long-time acquaintance, gossiping about Ye Sibei, claiming Sibei had always been "unruly" and "wild." Enraged, Guifen confronted Li Mingyu, throwing the purchased apples at her. She passionately defended Sibei's good character, reminding Li Mingyu how Sibei had tutored Li's child and shared meals with them in the past.
Guifen then loudly declared to the onlookers that she would tear the mouth apart of anyone who dared to speak ill of her daughter again. Qin Nan quickly intervened to pull her away from the scene. Back home, Guifen turned her anger on her husband, Ye Ling, who was sitting silently, concerned about his "face." Guifen lashed out, proclaiming that she no longer cared about her reputation, only about protecting her daughter.
She furiously questioned his inaction, reminding him of his earlier resolve to call the police and contrasting it with his current suggestion to ignore the gossip. She even suggested that perhaps they should have taken the money for a private settlement. Ye Ling, realizing his insensitivity, apologized for speaking without thinking. Nianwen, unable to cope with the injustice, went to his former mentor, Meng Xin, at the law firm, believing Meng Xin was colluding with Fan Jiancheng.
Despite Meng Xin's attempts to evade him by claiming he was on a business trip, Nianwen spotted him and confronted him, demanding to know how Fan Jiancheng had obtained the photograph of Ye Sibei with her eyes open. Meng Xin invoked lawyer-client confidentiality, which only further infuriated Nianwen. Nianwen accused Meng Xin of aiding a rapist and fabricating evidence, leading to a physical altercation.
Qin Nan arrived and separated them, while Meng Xin warned Nianwen that he would call the police if Nianwen returned. As Qin Nan took Nianwen away, Nianwen confided in his brother-in-law, expressing his profound despair and regretting having stopped Sibei from reporting the incident to the police earlier. Qin Nan comforted Nianwen, urging him to remain strong for their parents and Sibei.
He assured Nianwen that justice would eventually prevail, but it would be a long and arduous process, and they needed to unite to support their family. In a flashback to the night of the incident, Fan Jiancheng was seen at a dinner party, subtly instructing a waiter to deliver a glass of "water" to his colleague, Ye Sibei, who he implied had "drunk too much." This suggested he had drugged her.
Tao Jie was also seen assisting Fan Jiancheng with important documents, hinting at her ongoing involvement in his schemes, even during his imprisonment. Later, Zhao Ming confronted Fan Jiancheng at his company, attempting to terminate their professional relationship and offering a severance package. Fan Jiancheng, with utter contempt, rejected the offer, demanding 10% of the company's shares and three million yuan in compensation.
He threatened to expose Zhao Ming's past wrongdoings if his demands were not met, then walked away with an air of defiance. Wenwen's teacher, Ms. Jin, visited Zhao Shuhui, expressing concern over Wenwen's sudden withdrawal, silence, and frequent zoning out in class. Ms. Jin also shared a disturbing drawing Wenwen had made in a psychology session. Later, Ye Nianwen, now working as a ride-hailing driver, unexpectedly encountered Captain Zhang.
Nianwen shared his theory that Fan Jiancheng had used Ye Sibei's phone to send a fabricated "safe at home" message to Chuchu and then deleted the message to cover his tracks. Captain Zhang cautioned Nianwen against interfering in the police investigation and advised him not to abandon his legal career. Meanwhile, Captain Zhang was dining with Lin Feng when he observed a waiter serving water.
This mundane act sparked a revelation: they should revisit all witness statements, not for what they explicitly contained, but for what was subtly missing. Lin Feng, who had initially believed Captain Zhang was giving up the case, was surprised by his mentor’s new perspective. Zhao Shuhui confronted Fan Jiancheng, who was live-streaming to earn money, warning him not to damage their daughter's reputation by publicly discussing the case.
Fan Jiancheng, feigning sincerity, promised to cease discussing the matter online and asked Zhao Shuhui to call him by his first name again. However, the moment Zhao Shuhui left, his expression turned sinister. Huang Guifen, heartbroken by Sibei's gaunt appearance, urged her and Qin Nan to leave Nancheng and start anew, offering her life savings to help them escape the public scrutiny.
Ye Sibei, however, adamantly refused, declaring that leaving would brand her as a "deserter" and validate the stigma she was fighting to shed. Shortly after, Fan Jiancheng and Meng Xin appeared in an online interview for "Nancheng Stories." Meng Xin, in a seemingly impartial but subtly damaging statement, suggested that "Ms. Ye" be given an opportunity to "turn over a new leaf" and "start anew." Watching this broadcast, Huang Guifen suddenly collapsed. She was rushed to the hospital and diagnosed with a sudden cerebral infarction. The relentless pressure and emotional toll of these events left Ye Sibei feeling utterly suffocated.
Episode 14 Recap
Huang Guifen, still on an IV drip, finally regained consciousness, bringing a wave of relief to her daughter, Ye Sibei. Struggling to speak, Huang Guifen urged Ye Sibei to "Leave Nancheng. . . Go. . ." Despite her desire to see the lawsuit through, Ye Sibei verbally agreed to her mother's desperate plea.
Later, Ye Sibei had a serious conversation with her father, who confessed that he was the one who had insisted on sending her to the countryside when she was a child. He openly admitted his past mistakes of favoring sons and failing to be there for her during her formative years. He told her, "All these years, you've always thought your mom was against you in everything, blamed you for everything, and favored Nianwen over you.
But the truth behind it all. . . It was because of me." He continued, explaining how Huang Guifen's illness had made him realize many things, including how he had wronged both his wife and daughter. He then encouraged Ye Sibei to "listen to your mom. Go to the provincial capital. Start a new life there. I'll handle things here. Dad's here. Don't worry."
Hearing her father's heartfelt remorse, Ye Sibei felt that the hardships she had endured previously seemed insignificant; her parents' health and happiness were all that truly mattered. Qin Nan quietly went to the hospital cashier to pay for Huang Guifen's medical expenses. While there, he spotted Zhao Shuhui and Fan Jiancheng arriving. Qin Nan called Nianwen to ask where Ye Sibei was, learning she was collecting her mother's CT scan results. He then saw Fan Jiancheng approach Ye Sibei.
Fan Jiancheng feigned concern, asking Ye Sibei about her mother's health and if she needed financial assistance. Ye Sibei curtly replied, "Please leave." Qin Nan, witnessing the scene, stepped in and sternly told Fan Jiancheng to "Get out." Fan Jiancheng then pulled a reluctant Zhao Shuhui away, claiming their appointment was elsewhere. Fan Jiancheng's provocative words had a profound impact on Ye Sibei, leaving her emotionally distraught and tense. Meanwhile, Captain Zhang delved deeper into the case, suspecting hidden truths.
He found it suspicious that Meili, a server at the restaurant who had handed water to Ye Sibei that night, had abruptly resigned and found a "better job" shortly after the incident. The police located Meili, who revealed that she was introduced to her new job by Tao Jie, a colleague also present at the dinner, claiming they were from the same hometown, Zhi County.
Meili then confessed that while she gave Ye Sibei water, it was Fan Jiancheng who had poured it and specifically instructed her to give it to Ye Sibei, who was feeling unwell from drinking. Captain Zhang, connecting the dots, immediately contacted Captain Chen about any registered buyers of controlled medicine in Nancheng and ordered his team to investigate Fan Jiancheng's purchase records for such drugs.
Qin Nan decided to leave the city with Ye Sibei and sold his beloved car repair shop to his brother, Qiang, for a minimal sum, including a 30,000 yuan stake. He reassured Qiang that if they were truly brothers, money shouldn't be an issue, emphasizing that he wanted Qiang to take good care of the shop, which represented years of his hard work. Qin Nan proposed to Ye Sibei that they leave on the first of the following month.
Ye Sibei, however, hesitated, expressing concern for her recovering mother and suggesting they wait. Qin Nan reassured her that they could visit often or even bring her mother to live with them once they settled. That evening, Ye Sibei, in a strange mood, gave Qin Nan a glass of milk, which the Chinese plot indicated contained sleeping pills, telling him it would help him sleep as he hadn't been resting well. Qin Nan drank it.
The next morning, Qin Nan woke up and found Ye Sibei making breakfast, with Fan Jiancheng's live broadcast playing next to her. Qin Nan was perplexed by how long he had slept, remarking, "That's strange today. Why did I sleep so long? You didn't even wake me up." Ye Sibei dismissed his concern, saying he was merely tired and could sleep more.
When Qin Nan mentioned his plans to prepare the car for a house-hunting trip to the provincial capital, Ye Sibei demurred, stating her father had called, saying her mother wanted soup that would take six hours to simmer, and urged Qin Nan to go by himself. Qin Nan, though hesitant about making such a significant decision alone, accepted her reasoning. Meanwhile, Captain Zhang and Lin Feng were following Tao Jie after work.
Tao Jie, on her way to meet colleagues for a movie, appeared flustered when Captain Zhang stopped her, nearly hitting his car. She quickly got out. During their conversation, she identified herself as a finance director who had worked her way up in four years and was a local from Nancheng. When questioned about her relationship with Fan Jiancheng, she insisted they had no private contact, only professional dealings.
Captain Zhang then casually asked if Wu Meili was a relative, to which Tao Jie admitted she was a distant one. Tao Jie abruptly excused herself to pick up her child, despite having just claimed she had finished work early. Observing her evasiveness, Captain Zhang noted to Lin Feng that Tao Jie "is definitely hiding something."
That evening, Ye Sibei once again offered Qin Nan milk, which, given the earlier event, was implied to contain sleeping pills, claiming she had already finished hers. Qin Nan drank it. The following morning, Qin Nan was again surprised by his prolonged sleep. He called Qiang about the car's fuel tank, which was unexpectedly half-empty despite Qiang's assurance it had been filled. Later, a courier called, reporting that the moving boxes had arrived but no one answered the door.
Qin Nan, having left Ye Sibei at home to make soup, was bewildered. He immediately tried to call Ye Sibei, but her phone was off. Rushing back home, he found the house completely packed and meticulously cleaned, but Ye Sibei was gone without a trace. He then called Nianwen, who confirmed Ye Sibei was not at the hospital either.
Lin Feng later informed Captain Zhang that Tao Jie and Fan Jiancheng were indeed having an unethical relationship, prompting Captain Zhang to order focused surveillance on Fan Jiancheng. While tracking Fan Jiancheng, they soon encountered Ye Sibei, who claimed she was out buying bread. Captain Zhang, observing her, continued with their investigation. Qin Nan eventually saw Ye Sibei return home and was relieved to see her. He asked her where she had been and why she didn't answer his calls.
Ye Sibei claimed her phone ran out of battery and that she had been at the hospital. However, Qin Nan noticed mud on her pant leg, realizing she was lying, but chose not to confront her. Sensing Ye Sibei's continued erratic behavior, Qin Nan began to discreetly observe her actions. That night, Qin Nan pretended to be asleep and secretly followed Ye Sibei as she left the house.
He discovered she had meticulously tracked Fan Jiancheng to a gambling den, where he was enjoying himself. Ye Sibei observed Fan Jiancheng from a distance but ultimately returned home without confronting him. When she quietly slipped back into bed, Qin Nan pulled her into an embrace. He gently spoke to her, "Next month we'll move to the provincial city. Start our life over. We'll have a wonderful future." Ye Sibei replied, "I know. You and me. . . We'll all have a great future," her words tinged with a complex mix of understanding and sorrow, as if acknowledging his unspoken plea for her to abandon any drastic plans.
Episode 15 Recap
Late at night, Zhao Shuhui waited for Fan Jiancheng to return home, only to discover he had gambled away Wenwen's education fund. Unable to tolerate his behavior, she confronted him. Fan Jiancheng, feeling entitled, asserted that her family's prosperity was due to him and that she had no right to question him. He then slapped her. Dropping his pretense, Fan Jiancheng pinned Zhao Shuhui down. She threatened him with evidence she possessed, but he scoffed, believing she wouldn't report him.
He argued that if he were arrested, she would become his accomplice, and Wenwen would lose both parents, a terrifying prospect. He even dared her to keep the video of his wrongdoings, saying he wouldn't mind if she watched it. The next morning, Zhao Shuhui bore a bruise on her face, but for Wenwen's sake, she pretended as if nothing had happened. Fan Jiancheng feigned concern for his wife, even peeling a shrimp and insistently placing it in her bowl.
Zhao Shuhui, repulsed by his hypocrisy, initially gave the shrimp to Wenwen, but Fan Jiancheng forcefully returned it to her plate. Meanwhile, Ye Sibei and Qin Nan finally moved out of their old residence. Qin Nan understood Ye Sibei's need for personal space and quietly remained by her side. At the hospital, Zhao Chuchu discreetly inquired about Huang Guifen's condition, learning she was stable and in recovery.
Zhao Chuchu then asked a nurse to deliver a fruit basket to Huang Guifen's room, declining to enter herself due to an urgent matter. Later, Nianwen brought Huang Guifen some clothes and a toy that Ye Sibei used to play with as a child, hoping the blowing motion would stimulate her muscles, although Ye Sibei cautioned him not to overdo it due to her mother's condition.
Ye Sibei diligently helped her mother with rehabilitation exercises, encouraging her to put effort into her right foot and teasing her not to be lazy, promising water after she completed her steps. Huang Guifen eventually recovered enough to be discharged. As they prepared to leave, Ye Sibei told Qin Nan she wanted to visit Yang Qiyu, her high school Chinese teacher.
She explained that he had helped her secure a 20,000-yuan donation during her senior year, allowing her to continue her studies. She expressed a desire to thank the anonymous donor someday, but felt she had nothing to offer at present. Qin Nan vowed they would thank the donor together once he earned more money.
When Qin Nan then listed his own tasks, including tidying his shop and fixing his father's drainpipe, Ye Sibei interrupted, reminding him to focus on his own life, not just hers. She felt his constant sacrifice made her a burden. Qin Nan, feigning misunderstanding, dismissed her concerns, saying that as husband and wife, they should face hardships together, not abandon each other. He then attributed his state to lack of sleep and left.
Later, while Ye Sibei slept, Qin Nan secretly examined her notes, which detailed Fan Jiancheng's daily movements, routes, and even proposed escape plans, causing him silent distress. Earlier, Ye Sibei instructed someone to purchase two tickets for an upcoming Wednesday and arrange to meet at a specific location at that time, hinting at a clandestine operation. Later, she informed Qin Nan that she had already acquired tickets for a trip to Guangzhou (a provincial capital) on a Wednesday.
Qin Nan, aware of Ye Sibei's true intentions, feigned being busy when she asked about his schedule. Ye Sibei took Qin Nan to visit Mr. Yang. The teacher gave Qin Nan a meaningful look, as if harboring a secret, and advised Ye Sibei to cherish Qin Nan and not let him down, emphasizing that the past doesn't matter, but the future is worth contemplating. After their visit, Qin Nan accompanied Ye Sibei to their old high school.
He recalled his younger self and Ye Sibei's former brilliance. As they looked at old class photos, Ye Sibei pointed out her old classroom and seat, reminiscing about her top student days. She also spoke about the flag-raising platform where she once gave a speech titled "The Best Is Always in the Future," proclaiming that no suffering or despair is insurmountable.
Qin Nan subtly tried to dissuade Ye Sibei from her plan to go to the provincial capital by reminding her that Wednesday was his lunar birthday. However, Ye Sibei remained resolute, unwilling to waste the purchased tickets, but offered to celebrate with him at noon with a big cake. Fan Jiancheng, having tasted success at the gambling venue, continued to gamble there daily. Qin Nan, secretly following Ye Sibei, discovered she was carrying tools like knives and hammers.
When she wasn't looking, he discreetly disposed of them in the sea, hoping to prevent her from committing a grave mistake. Qin Nan repeatedly tried to persuade Ye Sibei to let go of her plans, but she seemed to have lost faith in the law and was determined to seek justice herself. Despite the underlying tension, Qin Nan pretended to be happy on his birthday.
They visited the graves of his deceased family members, where he solemnly introduced Ye Sibei as his wife and beloved. He spoke of her being his only family left and how she made him feel less alone, like he had a home. He then made a wish over a cake Ye Sibei brought, but became too emotional to eat it immediately.
He tearfully thanked her for celebrating his birthday with him after so many years, and she promised to celebrate with him every year from then on. Both of them knew their time together was limited, and they cherished these precious moments. Later, Captain Zhang paid a private visit to Huang Guifen to check on her. While there, he noticed an old class photo and discovered that Qin Nan and Ye Sibei were middle school classmates.
He observed that Qin Nan's gaze in the photo had always been fixed on Ye Sibei, suggesting a deeper reason for Qin Nan's unwavering support. Nianwen explained that he was packing up his sister's belongings because Ye Sibei and Qin Nan were moving to the provincial capital.
Episode 16 Recap
Nianwen watched Captain Zhang gazing at his sister's graduation photo, lost in thought. He explained that his sister, Ye Sibei, met Qin Nan after a blind date. Although Nianwen's father initially disapproved of Qin Nan's lower education, Ye Sibei was set on him, leading to their marriage. Captain Zhang then recalled a past conversation with Qin Nan, where he had remarked on the couple's deep affection after only a year of marriage.
He remembered Qin Nan stating he was from No. 7 High School when asked. Nianwen, eager for updates, asked Captain Zhang if there was new hope for his sister's case. Captain Zhang questioned Nianwen's persistence, noting that Ye Sibei herself had already given up. Visibly emotional, Nianwen confessed that he felt indirectly responsible for the incident and could not move past it. He elaborated that the event had devastated Ye Sibei, his mother, and Chuchu, impacting everything around him.
He felt that if Ye Sibei did not receive justice, he would never find peace. Captain Zhang then shared a new lead: the situation might not have unfolded as Ye Sibei remembered. When Nianwen thought Captain Zhang was suggesting his sister lied, Captain Zhang produced psychiatric medication. He explained that if Ye Sibei had been given such drugs while drinking, her memory might have been blurred or even lost entirely, making the events more understandable.
He emphasized this was still a theory requiring solid proof, citing that an ongoing investigation into illegal drug sales might link to Fan Jiancheng. Huang Guifen and her husband, listening in, exchanged glances of renewed hope. Captain Zhang then tasked Nianwen with encouraging Chuchu to come forward and admit she committed perjury during the first trial.
He described individuals at critical junctures in life, balancing between good and evil, and stressed that Nianwen's influence could tip Chuchu towards the path of truth. Chuchu, overwhelmed by guilt, had isolated herself in her room for over a month, refusing to eat. Her parents were deeply worried. Nianwen visited her, expressing concern. Chuchu hesitated to meet his eyes. Nianwen apologized for being so consumed by Ye Sibei's case that he had neglected Chuchu's own suffering from cyberbullying.
He now understood her predicament, assuring her he was not recording their conversation. Chuchu, feeling Nianwen's lack of trust, asked him not to press her further. Nianwen perceived that she was hiding something, which Chuchu did not deny. She recounted how, despite believing she had done nothing wrong, she was portrayed as a villain.
She shared how her professional attire and past relationships were scrutinized online, with some netizens even falsely accusing her of enabling Fan Jiancheng's actions against Ye Sibei. She had initially wanted to testify to see Fan Jiancheng imprisoned, but the relentless public backlash made her fear becoming a target, and the aggressive questioning by the opposing lawyer in court had utterly broken her.
Nianwen acknowledged that he might not fully grasp her ordeal but reassured her that he knew she was inherently a good person. Chuchu admitted she had wanted to lie in court to prove Ye Sibei's innocence but was terrified of the consequences. She recounted how the online community had condemned her for a minor oversight like leaving Ye Sibei in a car, and she couldn't imagine the outrage if they knew the full truth.
She confessed that she preferred to be seen as a "bad person" if it meant avoiding more suffering. Nianwen questioned if this stance caused her any conscience pangs, to which she admitted it did. She explained that she had longed for Nianwen to tell her he believed in her, as that would have given her the courage to speak out. However, the constant pressure from those around her and the internet made her feel that stepping forward would ruin her.
The only time she felt she had the courage was when Ye Sibei told her she wasn't a bad person. Nianwen countered that she should accept responsibility for her actions. Chuchu, exasperated, pleaded with Nianwen to treat her as a human, highlighting that people don't always do what they "should." She then turned the question on him, asking why he hadn't let Ye Sibei report the incident earlier, implying that he, too, acted out of human considerations.
Meanwhile, Captain Zhang visited Mr. Yang to learn more about Ye Sibei and Qin Nan's high school years. At the train station, Qin Nan was seeing Ye Sibei off. He seemed unusually hesitant and a bit nagging, but Ye Sibei, resolute in her journey to Guangzhou, didn't dwell on his behavior. Qin Nan told her he had wished for her lifelong safety, happiness, and fulfillment, brushing off her suggestion to wish for wealth as "worldly possessions."
He urged her not to look back or miss him, and she promised not to. Mr. Yang explained to Captain Zhang that he had wanted to tell Ye Sibei about Qin Nan's past support since their wedding day, but Qin Nan had forbidden it, fearing it would make Ye Sibei feel indebted in their marriage. Mr. Yang described Qin Nan as a dark-skinned, quiet boy who often associated with troublemakers, skipped classes, and played games.
Then, one day, Qin Nan came to him, asking if there was hope for him to study. Mr. Yang encouraged him, offering tutoring. Qin Nan revealed that his change of heart was inspired by a diligent and positive girl in the next class, Ye Sibei, who worked hard and helped her family. Mr. Yang clarified that Qin Nan's feelings for Ye Sibei were not romantic love, as they were young and hadn't interacted much.
Instead, Qin Nan admired her ability to do things he couldn't and saw her as a beacon of hope, believing her success would validate the idea that effort could change the world. Mr. Yang also recounted a summer holiday night when Qin Nan called him, weeping uncontrollably, revealing that both his father and brother had passed away. A flashback showed Qin Nan's mother giving him 30,000 yuan, instructing him to care for his grandfather before she left and remarried.
After this double tragedy, Qin Nan became withdrawn. He later approached Mr. Yang with a withdrawal form, giving him all his remaining funds to covertly donate to Ye Sibei for her studies, seeing her as a projection of his own hopes. Captain Zhang asked if this meant Qin Nan loved Ye Sibei, to which Mr. Yang replied that it was more akin to a "faith."
On the train, Ye Sibei received a phone call from Qin Nan, who instructed her not to get off at Yunwen Station and to continue to Guangzhou, assuring her that his subordinate, Lin Feng, was following her. He told her he had left a letter in her bag, which she was to burn after reading, and urged her not to get involved in his plans. Ye Sibei, sensing his intentions, pleaded with him not to do anything foolish.
Reading Qin Nan's letter, Ye Sibei learned of his difficult decision, his internal struggle over whether to kill Fan Jiancheng for her, and his desire for her to live a carefree life, believing her life was far more meaningful than his own. Qin Nan confessed to lying about not knowing her from the past; they were actually high school classmates at No. 2 High School twelve years ago.
He recalled her vibrant speech about never giving up on becoming a better self and their shared moment under an umbrella. He wrote that his world was once bleak and cold, and it was her smile in the rain and her radiance that brought him warmth and light. He detailed his struggles after leaving school, working odd jobs, and realizing society was far tougher than he imagined.
He recounted how he had called Mr. Yang to confirm Ye Sibei's successful college entrance exam results, finding solace in her continued success. He described giving in to the world's rules and how, even when lost in the daily grind of survival, the thought of her perseverance kept him going. He detailed how Mr. Gao, an auto repair shop owner, eventually took him on as an apprentice, acknowledging his quick learning.
Ye Sibei had previously received strange, silent calls, and another such call occurred. Qin Nan's letter continued, expressing that he had thought he would carry his hopes for her throughout his life. However, upon meeting her again years later, he was saddened to see her missing the bright smile, radiance, and spark in her eyes she once had.
He could accept his own submission to fate but not her change, which made him feel like he was falling back into a cold world. He wrote of his attempts to reconnect with her, to find her radiant self again, as that was how he felt he could breathe.
The letter ended with Qin Nan expressing regret and pain, acknowledging Ye Sibei's weakness and concessions after their marriage felt like a thorn in his heart, shattering his youthful hopes for her. He felt his glimmer of light dimming until it extinguished completely. Ye Sibei wept uncontrollably as she finished reading the letter.
Episode 17 Recap
As Ye Sibei held a letter in a daze, Lin Feng found her to say that Captain Zhang was looking for her. Ye Sibei answered her phone, and Captain Zhang urgently asked if she had planned to kill Fan Jiancheng. Ye Sibei was silent for a few seconds. Captain Zhang then revealed that Qin Nan had gone to kill Fan Jiancheng by himself, wanting Ye Sibei to live a good life.
He further disclosed that the 20,000 yuan Ye Sibei received in her senior year of high school came from Qin Nan, who used his father's death compensation, originally meant for his own education, for her. Captain Zhang urged Ye Sibei not to let Qin Nan sacrifice the rest of his life for her.
He then gave Ye Sibei the location, an abandoned power plant at the foot of Mount Suming on the city's outskirts, and told her to contact Fan Jiancheng, warning him not to go to the casino that night. Ye Sibei immediately called Nianwen, telling him about Qin Nan's plan to seek revenge on Fan Jiancheng and urging him to intervene. Zhao Chuchu joined Nianwen to go to the location.
Meanwhile, Captain Zhang tried to call Fan Jiancheng to prevent the confrontation, but Fan Jiancheng, listening to music, didn't hear his phone ringing. Captain Zhang then called Zhao Shuhui, asking her to contact Fan Jiancheng, explaining that her husband was in danger and needed to come home. Everyone was rushing to the scene, but Fan Jiancheng remained unreachable.
In a letter to Ye Sibei, Qin Nan expressed his enduring love, wishing her a life of happiness and enjoyment that he never had. He acknowledged that his initial motivation might have been a sense of duty or an inability to accept her humiliation, but he gradually realized his feelings were more complex. He questioned why he stayed by her side, wondering if she was a projection of his hope for the world.
He then realized that from the moment he accepted her weaknesses, understood her, and shared his life with her—hearing her yell on his motorcycle, watching city lights together—she became more than just his faith; she became a real person he had poured all his emotions into. Qin Nan confessed that he was the truly weak one, having succumbed to fate repeatedly, while Ye Sibei's soul never yielded, a quality he admired and loved most about her.
He concluded that her life had more meaning than his, and he hoped she would live happily, carrying the world he could not have. He ended by reaffirming his love, assuring her that someone in this world would always love her, "like Qin Nan." As Fan Jiancheng prepared to head to the casino with money, he opened his car window to find Qin Nan there. Fan Jiancheng tried to hide in the casino, but Qin Nan followed.
Inside, Fan Jiancheng's bodyguards severely beat Qin Nan, leaving him gravely injured. Just then, the police arrived at the scene. Qin Nan, despite his injuries, was still pursuing Fan Jiancheng. Desperate, Fan Jiancheng offered all his money and even promised to record a video apology. He claimed his actions were merely "temporary infatuation" and that he "couldn't control himself," even comparing himself to an animal.
Qin Nan angrily stated that Fan Jiancheng was "worse than an animal" and deserved to die. He demanded Fan Jiancheng apologize to Ye Sibei and admit his crimes, including drugging her. Qin Nan dismissed Fan Jiancheng's pleas, asserting, "I don't believe you. I only believe myself." Captain Zhang intervened, telling Qin Nan that the law would deliver justice and he shouldn't waste the rest of his life for someone unworthy.
Qin Nan, however, felt responsible for Ye Sibei's suffering, believing their lives would have been better if he hadn't been so weak. He was agitated, even threatening others with a chain. Just then, Ye Sibei arrived, urging Qin Nan to be strong and trust the law. She told him that one assault, one lost case, one failure, or one insult would not ruin her life.
She explained that her previous fear stemmed from a lack of self-love and feeling unloved, which led her to deny herself. She realized that she needed to love herself and understand her own worth. Seeing Qin Nan risking everything, she deemed it not worth it. She reiterated that this incident was merely a "detour" in their lives.
She needed him to live the rest of his life with her, emphasizing that justice should not come at the cost of sacrifice, and that their fate could be changed through their efforts. Finally, Qin Nan, swayed by Ye Sibei's words and emotion, dropped the chain and collapsed. Ye Sibei wanted to visit Qin Nan, but the police prevented her from entering, citing rules against family visits during detention.
She stood outside, shouting for Qin Nan to believe in the law, assuring him they would overcome this hardship together. Captain Zhang also told Ye Sibei to be strong, explaining that once Fan Jiancheng's injury assessment was complete, the court would make a fair ruling. Meanwhile, Zhao Shuhui, Fan Jiancheng's wife, checked his computer. She was shocked to discover videos of him assaulting multiple women. Though distraught by his betrayal, she rationally copied the incriminating videos onto a USB drive.
Ye Sibei and Nianwen returned home, concealing the truth from their parents. Nianwen told their mother that Qin Nan had taken a big contract, requiring him to travel frequently between their city and the provincial capital, so he wouldn't be home for a while. Later, Ye Sibei confessed to Nianwen that she used to struggle with their parents, feeling he was favored and only remembering their negative actions, not their kindness.
Nianwen, guilt-ridden, believed that if he hadn't married, Ye Sibei wouldn't have faced such difficulties. However, Ye Sibei reassured him that it wasn't his fault. She also shared her newfound perspective on good and bad: that they are separate aspects of a person and shouldn't be confused. One should reject bad actions but not let them erase the good. She added that a person is "bad" not for making a mistake, but for refusing to change after making one.
When Nianwen asked if she hated Chuchu, Ye Sibei said Chuchu was "never really a bad person" and that the Chuchu she knew "will turn back." Ye Sibei appeared on a talk show, sharing how the incident caused immense trauma and a lost lawsuit, leading many to unfairly judge her.
She revealed that her mother and brother initially discouraged her from reporting the incident, and after she bravely reported again, she was threatened, insulted, and mocked, with some questioning her actions and shaming her family. She reflected that the outcome of her case might have been different if she had pursued forensic tests like drug and blood tests from the beginning. She vowed to persevere and encouraged others to be stronger and more courageous than her.
As Zhao Chuchu watched Ye Sibei's live interview, Ye Sibei spoke directly to female viewers, addressing "obedience tests" in the workplace, why women are judged for dressing beautifully, and why victims are blamed after suffering harm. Her words resonated deeply with women. Motivated by Ye Sibei's courage and her own reflection, Zhao Chuchu firmly decided to take responsibility for her past actions. She called Lin Feng, declaring her intention to surrender.
Episode 18 (Ending) Recap
At home, Fan Jiancheng was searching on his computer when he noticed that all the videos he had saved were gone. Zhao Shuhui emerged, asking him if he was looking for the videos of the girls he had violated. Realizing Zhao Shuhui was responsible, Fan Jiancheng angrily grabbed her neck and demanded to know what she had done.
Zhao Shuhui calmly revealed that she had not only deleted the videos but had also copied them, before stating that she had given them to the police and that he couldn't escape, even if he choked her to death. Fan Jiancheng, defeated, muttered that she was killing him.
Meanwhile, Officer Lin Feng excitedly told his superior, Captain Zhang, over the phone that Zhao Chuchu had called to admit she committed perjury in the first trial and was on her way to the station. Captain Zhang then shared his own good news: Zhao Shuhui had provided evidence of Fan Jiancheng's crimes. Lin Feng cheered, believing they could finally bring the scumbag to justice, but Captain Zhang urged him to be more composed.
Shortly after, Officer Lin Feng called Ye Sibei to share the good news that there was new progress in her case and it could be retried, though he couldn't disclose specific details. Ye Sibei was overcome with emotion, thanking him, and then shared the news with her brother, Nianwen, who was equally thrilled, wondering if the police had found new evidence. Ye Sibei speculated that it might have been Chuchu.
Zhao Chuchu went to the police station and confessed to Captain Zhang that she had lied during the first trial. Captain Zhang told her to go home but advised her not to leave Nancheng for the next few days. As Zhao Chuchu exited the police station, she saw Ye Nianwen. He offered to take her home, but she declined, saying she could go by herself, adding that it was about to rain and offering her an umbrella.
Feeling a profound sense of liberation, Zhao Chuchu felt as if she had been reborn. Elsewhere, Tao Jie was apprehended by the police at her workplace, who stated they needed her assistance with a case. Meanwhile, the owner of Yazhi Boutique delivered a custom-made dress to Ye Sibei, which Qin Nan had ordered for her to wear during her first lawsuit before the case was overturned.
Recalling a past conversation with Qin Nan where he promised to buy her a dress if she won, Ye Sibei put on the beautiful gown. She arrived at the courthouse to find a crowd of supporters cheering her on, many having traveled far to be there. Ye Sibei recognized them as the silent victims of the world, those who had once felt invisible, and their presence filled her with unwavering determination.
At the courthouse, Meng Xin approached Ye Nianwen, congratulating him on returning to his legal career, to which he thanked her and promised to strive to be a good lawyer. Meng Xin then addressed Ye Sibei, stating that while everyone deserves the right to a defense, the truth would not be buried by her own defense. She hoped Ye Sibei would understand.
During the retrial, Zhao Chuchu bravely testified, explaining that she was terrified after leaving Ye Sibei in the car, as public outrage turned against her. Netizens dug into her past, attacking her appearance, behavior, and even previous relationships, trying to paint her as an evil person who intentionally abandoned Ye Sibei. This constant online scrutiny, combined with the pressure to fit the "good girl" standard, plunged her into anxiety and depression.
She admitted to scrolling online daily, desperately trying to prove her innocence and stop the attacks, which led her to lie in court. However, she recounted living in guilt and regret afterward. Standing before the court, she affirmed that the condom found in Ye Sibei's bag was hers, given to Ye Sibei for her safety and had nothing to do with Ye Sibei's personal actions. Next, Zhao Shuhui took the stand.
She testified that she had always believed Fan Jiancheng was a good father and husband, instinctively protecting his image even when he erred, thinking his mistakes were mere impulses. However, her discovery of further evidence of him harming other innocent women shattered his image. As a father to a daughter, she was deeply disappointed and felt naive for her past protection of him.
Realizing her actions were wrong, she chose to stand up, believing that if she didn't, more innocent women would be hurt. She declared her intention to seek justice, protect the innocent, and confirmed that she had submitted all evidence to the police, asking for leniency for her past mistakes for her daughter's sake. Tao Jie also testified, identifying herself as an employee of Fuqiang Real Estate and a former victim of Fan Jiancheng.
She described how, upon joining the company, she admired Fan Jiancheng's kindness and care. One night, after a company gathering where he drank heavily and confided in her about his unhappiness, she offered to take him home. He asked her to take him to a hotel for the night, and she, trusting him, agreed. However, she recounted being brutally assaulted, strangled, and having her head repeatedly slammed against a wall.
She begged him to stop but he seemed not to hear, and she thought she would die. The next day, she fled, too afraid to report to the police or even tell her parents, convinced that her actions—drinking with him, taking him to a hotel—made her complicit and deserving of the assault. Afterward, Fan Jiancheng promoted her and doubled her salary, treating her even better, which led her to trust him again and continue an illicit relationship.
It wasn't until Ye Sibei's case surfaced that she realized his old habits had returned. Though she initially tried to help him cover it up, she eventually understood she was harming him by doing so. Fan Jiancheng, agitated by her testimony, interrupted, calling her a "jerk" and claiming they were merely lovers, asserting she once wanted to be with him forever. The judge admonished him to control his emotions.
The presiding judge then questioned Ye Sibei, asking why she had initially remained silent after such trauma, only to accuse him later. Ye Sibei explained that she had never experienced such a thing and her family warned that reporting it would only reopen her wounds. She admitted to being afraid, as fear of the unknown is natural. Though she considered giving up, an inner voice prompted her, asking if she could truly pretend nothing had happened.
She concluded that she could not. She acknowledged the immense difficulties she faced after taking that step, but affirmed that she never gave up because of the many people who supported and encouraged her with their immense kindness. Finally, the court announced its verdict. Fan Jiancheng was found guilty of rape, having used violence, threats, and drugs against multiple victims, a serious offense.
His attempts to evade criminal responsibility by instructing Zhao Shuhui to conceal and forge evidence during the first trial, which led to his initial acquittal, demonstrated his extreme malice and danger to society. The court accepted the appeal from the Linjiang City People's Procuratorate. Fan Jiancheng was sentenced to fifteen years in prison and deprived of political rights for two years for rape. Additionally, he was found guilty of illegal drug possession and sentenced to two years in prison.
The sentences were combined, resulting in a total imprisonment of sixteen years and deprivation of political rights for two years. This judgment was declared final. As the court adjourned, Ye Sibei called out to Fan Jiancheng, asking if he wouldn't apologize to them. He softly offered his apologies twice. With the victory, Ye Sibei felt as though she had finally seen her own sun. Meanwhile, still in prison, Qin Nan heard the news of Ye Sibei's victory and was overjoyed.
Captain Zhang subtly put away the phone he had been holding up to the window, having allowed Qin Nan to listen to the verdict. Three years later, Qin Nan was out of prison. He and Ye Sibei planned to move and start a new life after the Chinese New Year.
Huang Guifen, Ye Sibei's mother, hoped for a better life for her daughter and son-in-law as they all gathered to happily make beef dumplings, with Nianwen proudly noting he had mixed the filling. Qin Nan informed Huang Guifen that they had found a satisfactory house near home with convenient transport.
When asked about work, Qin Nan assured her everything was arranged and they would invite her to visit once settled, adding that he wasn't sure if he'd open another repair shop, considering he was young enough to learn new things. Huang Guifen approved of their plans. Before they left, Huang Guifen affectionately instructed Ye Sibei to let her know if anything happened and to take care of herself, then asked Qin Nan to be patient with Ye Sibei's occasional stubbornness.
Qin Nan reassured her, and they drove off, with Ye Nianwen reminding them to call when they arrived. As Ye Sibei looked back, she reflected in a voiceover that this departure marked her rebirth, ensuring she would never again be tangled by the inexplicable love and hate of her past. Meanwhile, Ye Nianwen had become a successful lawyer, frequently on the phone, handling client affairs and checking in with his father.
One day, he ran into Zhao Chuchu at a restaurant. There was an initial awkwardness due to their past, but they exchanged pleasantries, with Zhao Chuchu congratulating him on returning to his legal profession, and Nianwen commenting on her good spirits. As Zhao Chuchu was about to leave, Ye Nianwen called out to her, expressing his continued affection and asking her to dinner, which she happily accepted. Ye Sibei and Qin Nan finally settled by the sea.
Qin Nan continued to hold onto a photo from Nancheng No.2 High School, reminiscing. Ye Sibei asked him why his former repair shop was called 'Xuehua', meaning 'Snowflake'. He explained it was because her name, Sibei, made him think she liked snow. She clarified it was actually her mother, a woman from the north, who associated snow with her hometown.
Ye Sibei admitted she wasn't sure if she liked the north but expressed a desire to visit it with Qin Nan someday, to which he promised to accompany her wherever she went. In their new life by the sea, Qin Nan diligently fished every day, while Ye Sibei opened a popular inn. They had their first child, a daughter whom Ye Sibei named Nuannuan. Qin Nan had eagerly anticipated this new life's arrival.
