Zhou Jingmang arrived at school cheerfully, wearing the cream scarf Zhang Yang had given her. Her friend Qin Zhen commented on the scarf, saying it made Zhou Jingmang look "like a wax figure" and that "you need to be really pale to be able to pull off a cream scarf," suggesting Shen Yinghui might suit it better. Qin Zhen even offered to switch scarves with her.
However, Zhou Jingmang insisted she liked this one, falsely claiming she bought it herself, before hurrying off to class. In class, the monitor, Ling Chen, reported that everyone was present except Zhang Yang. Zhuang Jie informed Teacher Shi that Zhang Yang had a "quite serious" cold and asked for a day off for him. Zhou Jingmang, worried, waited outside the boy's restroom to ask Zhuang Jie about Zhang Yang.
Zhuang Jie exaggerated Zhang Yang's condition, claiming he "can't speak and he has a fever," couldn't get out of bed, and would "need at least half a month to recover." When asked if she wanted to visit him, Zhou Jingmang nervously declined and also asked Zhuang Jie not to convey her worries, insisting she was "just asking." In reality, Zhang Yang was performing in a street dance competition.
Zhuang Jie later called Zhang Yang to tell him that Zhou Jingmang was "so flustered" and "really cares about you" when she heard he was sick. Zhang Yang smiled, instructing Zhuang Jie to maintain the lie until his performance was over. After his performance, a manager from Beijing Tong Rui Culture approached Zhang Yang, praising his performance and stating his "overall conditions are very ideal."
She offered him a chance to become a trainee in Beijing, emphasizing that with his dance skills, he "will be able to debut very quickly" after "fully shut-in" training. Zhang Yang took her business card but seemed hesitant about going to Beijing. When Zhang Yang returned to school, Zhou Jingmang consciously wore the scarf, and he noticed her from behind, smiling to himself.
Qin Zhen playfully teased Zhou Jingmang about secretly beautifying herself because Zhuang Jie told her Zhang Yang would be back. She also commented on Zhou Jingmang wearing a scarf in class, asking if she wasn't hot. Teacher Shi announced that all students must participate in the school anniversary performance auditions. Qin Zhen suggested doing stand-up comedy with her, but Zhou Jingmang didn't think she was funny. Shen Yinghui announced she would perform ballet. Later, during a class meeting, Shen Yinghui volunteered her ballet act, welcoming others to join. Zhang Yang then raised his hand, not to join Shen Yinghui, but to propose a new act: street dance. He specified he needed partners with "basic dancing skill and an ability to appreciate dance."
Unexpectedly, Shen Yinghui changed her mind, stating that "Ballet requires advanced skills and methods. It is not suitable for us to perform together," but she had "learned street dance for a while before," and offered to help Zhang Yang organize the performance. Zhou Jingmang wanted to join a dance group. Outside the school, Zhang Yang teased Zhou Jingmang about a face injury from clumsiness, then squatted down to tie her shoelaces and adjust her scarf.
He then invited her to join his dance team, clarifying that he wouldn't make her dance, given her supposed clumsiness and lack of dance skills. Instead, he wanted her to write a poem, suggesting the title "Fearless Youth," which he would then transform into a rap song for their dance music, making the performance more innovative. Zhou Jingmang, amazed by his versatile talents, eagerly accepted, promising to write well.
She later shared this news with Qin Zhen and Shen Yinghui at lunch, who were happy for her. Shen Yinghui, however, secretly harbored feelings for Zhang Yang, hoping that by participating in his dream, no matter how small the chances, she could become a part of his world. Shen Yinghui brought Zhou Jingmang to the dance studio for practice.
Due to the lack of dancers in their class, Zhang Yang had arranged for the performance to be a cross-class collaboration, bringing in skilled dancers from other classes. One of these dancers was Li Yu Xiang, whom Zhou Jingmang recognized from seeing him dance on the playground.
Li Yu Xiang recognized Zhou Jingmang immediately from an article she wrote on the school bulletin board and openly expressed his admiration for her, suggesting they were fated to meet and wanting to treat her to a meal. Zhang Yang entered the room while Li Yu Xiang was talking to Zhou Jingmang, looking displeased. Zhou Jingmang quickly clarified to Zhang Yang that she had "just met" Li Yu Xiang.
Zhang Yang announced that Zhou Jingmang would write a rap, and he would compose the music for their performance. Zhou Jingmang introduced herself to the group, promising to "work hard" and not to "disappoint you all," which Zhang Yang found "quite funny." During practice, Li Yu Xiang encouraged Zhou Jingmang to try some simple dance moves, even offering to teach her. Zhang Yang intervened, telling Li Yu Xiang, "Dancing is not her thing.
Just let her write properly," and reminded everyone to "start practicing." Later, Li Yu Xiang suggested to Zhou Jingmang that he could perform specific moves for her if she needed inspiration for her lyrics. Zhang Yang again interjected, directing Li Yu Xiang to discuss team structure adjustments for the rap song with Shen Yinghui. Li Yu Xiang then asked Zhou Jingmang if her lyrics were ready, but Zhang Yang stated he would give them to him once she finished.
Feeling a mix of inspiration and awkwardness, Zhou Jingmang decided to leave to write. Zhang Yang instructed her not to be lazy and to finish writing early, while Li Yu Xiang encouraged her not to be afraid of Zhang Yang and to write slowly. Shen Yinghui offered to stay behind with Zhang Yang to practice some moves, asking him for help. As Zhou Jingmang left, Zhang Yang watched her go.
He realized that when other people started entering Zhou Jingmang's world, he began to understand his youthful affection. He reflected that a teenage crush often involves the conflict of worrying that the person knows your feelings, but also worrying that they don't, leading to a situation where the person might never realize how many times you've secretly watched them from a hidden corner.
In 2015, Zhou Jingmang, in an urgent work situation, was searching for a specific law firm involved in a Rui Fang company project concerning an internal human resources dispute. She located the firm and went there in person. There, she reunited with Zhang Yang, who worked at the firm and had previously handled documentation for the same project. Zhou Jingmang, absorbed in her work, quickly retrieved the necessary meeting notes from him, barely acknowledging their past connection.
Meanwhile, Qin Zhen and Shen Yinghui were at their old school, reminiscing about how much it had changed and their past experiences, from Qin Zhen getting caught with her phone to Zhang Yang and Zhou Jingmang’s well-known incident. They talked about how memories, even difficult ones, become precious over time. Qin Zhen received a phone call and stepped away. Back at the firm, Zhou Jingmang finished her work. Zhang Yang brought her a glass of water, struggling to find words.
He eventually commented, "You. . . you are quite capable of working," which Zhou Jingmang pointed out he had also said about her studying in the past. Frustrated by his lack of a true apology or explanation for his past actions, Zhou Jingmang asked, "Zhang Yang, isn't there anything you want to say to me?" When he remained silent, she angrily stomped on his foot and declared, "I hate you," before storming out, leaving Zhang Yang stunned.
