Remember My Boy Episode 2 Recap
> Remember My Boy Recap
When Zhang Yang lowered his head to look at Zhou Jingmang in the soft summer breeze, she realized every encounter planned by fate was not a mere coincidence. She understood then that a destined meeting, a glance in class, and an instant of excitement would profoundly intertwine their future. At that youthful age, such fleeting moments brought joy and held deep meaning, marking the true beginning of their story.
In the summer of 2007, a recovered Shen Yinghui decided to treat Zhang Yang and Zhuang Jie to a meal as a thank you for their help during her illness, with Zhou Jingmang and Qin Zhen also joining. Qin Zhen complimented Shen Yinghui on her beauty. When Zhang Yang saw Zhou Jingmang, he immediately teased her about her appearance, asking her age. After she stated she was sixteen, he jokingly remarked that she looked like a six-year-old.
Qin Zhen quickly defended Zhou Jingmang, and Shen Yinghui then ushered everyone inside, expressing her happiness to have met them in high school. During dinner, Qin Zhen suggested a game where everyone would write their dreams on a slip of paper. They would then randomly pick a paper, and the person whose dream they picked would become its "dream guardian." Qin Zhen declared her dream was to become a flight attendant, which Zhuang Jie lightly mocked.
Zhuang Jie's own dream was simply "to be happy," which Qin Zhen found uninspired. When Zhou Jingmang revealed she had drawn Zhang Yang's paper, it was blank. Zhang Yang claimed he had no dream. Shen Yinghui, on the other hand, passionately shared her aspiration to be a ballet dancer, having pursued it since childhood. Zhang Yang held Zhou Jingmang's paper but deflected, joking that a six-year-old wouldn't have a dream, thereby avoiding reading it aloud.
Later, as they walked back to the dorms, Zhang Yang warned Zhou Jingmang not to secretly badmouth him. Zhou Jingmang, attempting to comfort him, claimed she also had no dreams. However, Zhang Yang countered that he simply hadn't revealed his dream because it hadn't come true yet. Feeling competitive, Zhou Jingmang then passionately declared her true dream: to become a bestselling author who could lead a new era of literature, an incredibly accomplished writer.
Zhang Yang playfully dismissed her ambitious dream, telling her to "go home and have sweet dreams," before Shen Yinghui intervened, suggesting they all head back. As military training neared its conclusion in the autumn of 2007, Class 6, 10th grade excelled in their performance review. The instructor praised them and allowed them to rest. Having grown fond of their instructor, the students, led by Qin Zhen, decided to take a group photo with him using Qin Zhen's mobile phone.
This moment was interrupted by Teacher Zhou, the strict director of the teaching department and their English teacher, whom students secretly nicknamed "Zhou Ba Pi." He sternly reprimanded them for violating school rules by possessing a phone during military training and confiscated Qin Zhen's device. When the instructor attempted to take responsibility, Teacher Zhou dismissed him. Infuriated by Teacher Zhou's aggressive manner, Zhang Yang stepped forward, seemingly intending to physically confront him.
Zhou Jingmang, fearing Zhang Yang's impulsiveness, knelt down and hugged his legs, pleading with him to calm down. Her actions successfully diffused the situation, and Zhang Yang slowly backed down. Despite the students' protests about Teacher Zhou's harshness, he angrily instructed Qin Zhen to call her parents before leaving. After the last military theory class, Qin Zhen urged Zhou Jingmang to join her for a walk, as Shen Yinghui was with Teacher Shi.
Unbeknownst to Zhou Jingmang, her notebook had fallen onto the floor in the classroom. Outside, Qin Zhen excitedly informed Zhou Jingmang that Zhang Yang had been exceptionally admitted to the school basketball team as a first-year student, even comparing his basketball skills to Liu Chuan Feng. Zhou Jingmang remained unfazed by this news. Qin Zhen's attention then shifted to Ling Chen, who was engrossed in a book while everyone else was playing.
Qin Zhen spoke admiringly of Ling Chen, recounting how he discreetly supported his ailing parents and refused special treatment from teachers, preferring to achieve success through his own efforts. Qin Zhen saw him as a positive role model and expressed a strong desire to befriend him. Zhou Jingmang, however, simply stated her wish to remain inconspicuous and have a peaceful path to college.
Upon returning to the classroom, Zhou Jingmang discovered her notebook had been torn up by some male classmates, folded into paper airplanes, and thrown around, some even out the window. Furious, and ignoring the ringing class bell, she rushed downstairs to retrieve the scattered pages. Zhang Yang followed her outside, seeing her upset. He tried to help her retrieve two of the paper airplanes but accidentally bumped her, causing her nose to bleed. He promptly took her to the infirmary.
The nurse confirmed it was a minor injury from an external cause and would stop bleeding soon. Zhang Yang also pointed out an injury on Zhou Jingmang's arm, but then told the nurse it wasn't serious and no medicine was needed for it. While Zhou Jingmang was recovering in the infirmary, Zhang Yang stayed by her side.
He noticed she still had tissue stuffed in her nose even after the bleeding stopped and teased her, asking if she wanted to suffocate. He then picked up her notebook, which contained her novel, and started reading it. When Zhou Jingmang questioned him, he admitted he had just read it. He then commented that she had portrayed him too simply, like a delinquent, suggesting she didn't know him well enough.
When she asked how to get to know him better, he playfully said it would take at least three years. He then offered to reveal his dream to her, but only if she agreed to a promise: he would tell her his dream when her first essay was officially published. Though Zhou Jingmang initially found this a way to delay telling her, she eventually agreed to a pinky promise.
The incident during military training, where Zhou Jingmang bravely intervened to stop Zhang Yang, transformed her from an "invisible girl" into a well-known figure on campus. Many admired her courage, but Zhou Jingmang herself knew that in that moment, she was so nervous her stomach hurt, feeling a surge of emotion she had never experienced before.
It felt like an innate instinct to protect Zhang Yang, and despite the tension, she had never felt so happy, as if she had successfully overcome a significant challenge. In 2015, at a high school reunion, the friends revisited a similar game, sharing their current life plans. Zhou Jingmang drew a slip from Shen Yinghui, on which was written "Find Zhang Yang."
Shen Yinghui explained her current plan was to produce a ballet performance depicting their youth, and to do so, she needed to interview everyone, including Zhang Yang. This mention visibly saddened Zhou Jingmang. Later that night, Zhou Jingmang became heavily intoxicated. As Shen Yinghui helped her home, Zhou Jingmang, in her drunken state, wondered why Zhang Yang had suddenly disappeared, abandoning all their promises.
She reflected on her own unwavering efforts to fulfill their agreement and questioned what Zhang Yang was willing to sacrifice for her. She cried out to an imagined Zhang Yang, begging him not to leave her. Back at Zhou Jingmang's place, Shen Yinghui noticed Zhou Jingmang still kept a scarf, a symbol of their friendship and Zhang Yang's presence, realizing they both still harbored feelings for him. Just then, Zhou Jingmang's phone rang.
Shen Yinghui answered, and the caller simply stated, "I'm Zhang Yang," before hanging up. Shen Yinghui, realizing the possibility that Zhang Yang and Zhou Jingmang might have secretly been in contact, selfishly deleted the call record from Zhou Jingmang's phone.
